Journey seems lazy all of a sudden....

I'm optimistic as ever for the new record and all but there are so many signs of these guys slowing down and going through the motions...

Doing "Faith in the Heartland" again? Almost completely ripping a song from RoR for the lead single? Half the known new songs being described as "ballads" with titles like "Like a Sunshower"? Not a single surprise on the re-recorded classics either...

Plus, the live stuff... only Arnel and Deen seem to have much energy these days. Piped-in backing vocals don't do much to help either....

Would it hurt that much to take a little bit of a risk on this new stuff? Throw in a re-recorded "Winds of March," "Walks Like A Lady," or "Chain Reaction" for the pure hell of it? Stop recycling songs from past albums? Hell, I'm sure some of the new songs have probably been in the tank since the Arrival sessions..

All that said, I HOPE I'M PROVEN COMPLETELY WRONG.

And I am still 100% in support of the Arnel-fronted lineup and want the band to enjoy success. I'll still be buying the record and hopefully attending a show or two. However... it's just kinda sad that there aren't many signs of Journey really challenging their boundaries at least a little more like they have every album up to now.

Prove me wrong, fellas.

They have a single out for radio release and will be touring in promotion
of the new album......you confuse me young one.

That tour schedule says...they're workin'

I'll reserve the musical part until I ACTUALLY hear the album. Song titles alone won't get me to format an opinion.

I'm not trying to start anything, I just had a concerned moment just now and aired it out... I feel a little better now. 8)

Oh, and perhaps I should've clarified that they seem -Creatively- tired..

"Faith in the Heartland" is just really sticking out to me right now, especially...

Damn sure did. I was surprised they rolled that one out.

I think that is what bothers me most of all.

It's not a classic... not a legacy song... not a big selling album... but they chose to re-record it with a different singer??!?

I happen to agree with you. I think the guys are too focused on making money and not enough on being artists. Waiting to hear what the new album yields, but I'm expecting Arrival 2.0 at best.

I like what someone said earlier. Rerecord it with good production and put it on a good record. It is a good song.

I think Faith in the Heartland is a great song and I'm personally glad to see it getting another chance. You shouldn't just throw away great songs that didn't get a chance.

As far as Never Walk Away, well in my mind it makes perfect sense to put out something that REALLY sounds like Journey to get people's attention and just shouts "HEY WE'RE BACK". I'm now waiting to hear the rest of the album.

Same here. I've always felt that song was a cut above the rest.

A band..(80's band if you will..)promoting a NEW album with 11 NEW songs (Okay, 10..)with a NEW lead singer.. on a WORLD tour.

Yep, their lazy alright

EDIT:

My thought on the Faith in the Heartland is nothing but a second coming of what the band really feels about the song. They were never satisfied around the way the song ended up being portrayed..esp. by lead from Augeri. They want to bring that song back to new heights, and strongly believe with Arnels style of singing..it can be brought back with vengeance and could actualy stick out to be one of the headliners on the tour.

With that said, I still think it shouldn't of cracked disc 1, disc 2 would of been a better fit. Definetly from a wording point of view. I'm ready for this CD, and will think management knows what their doing all around. I've put my trust in them. The wait is on.

I agree partially prog, I was hoping for some twist to the re records, and If your gonna do FITH put it on that disc. however the only one who seems bored to me is Jon. Neal seems to have a good time with Arnel.

I would be willing to bet that Wheel In The Sky is re-recorded how it's currently played in concert (faster, with the rhythm guitar riff midway through). There might be more that are updated, too. But I think putting FITH on the first disc might not be a bad idea. I'm going say Generations is probably the least-heard Journey album (except for the first three). More people were aware of Arrival than knew about Generations. FITH is a monster track that might get some well-deserved attention now.

Agree solidly. But to think that FITH was charted as song #1 on Generations...is a bit iffy, but not that big of a deal. Now if it was around 10 on the album, then I wouldn't be sayin' the little of what I'm sayin'. FITH was the staple of Generations, and even if there were 3-4 good songs on the album, FITH stood its ground then. With this new fucker out, this song could do damage with a little more power around it then say what Generations had around it.

With that said....I will say the re-release of FITH is prolly indicative of larger chemistry problems.
Didn't Neal and JSS have an album's worth of new material before the Leppard tour ended?
Meanwhile, Cain and Schon are always resorting to re-releases or outside writers to hit their quota.
Around the time of Red13, Cain even mentioned that 4-song EPs would prolly be the norm from here on out.

Agree on both counts here.

For a re-record I'm expectin FITH to be a shorter version than the original.

If they have a hope of hitting radio on anything but classic rock stations, smart move not going with a ballad. They're already ridiculed for power pop as it is.

*sigh*

I will admit that Generations is the least known Journey album of them all and that FITH did not get enough of the exposure that it deserved...

They will probably make it a lot better... Arnel will probably sound awesome belting it out...
In that sense I understand why they're putting it on the first disc and not throwing it in with the re-recordings...

However, I have to say it and possibly subject myself to endless ridicule about being close-minded and (dare I say it) a "wiggler", that will always be Augeri's song in my head. :?
I can't imagine anyone singing it and I don't want to.
:?

That being said, I still intend to buy it so it really makes no difference what I think does it. :P

Indeed.

Gotta resist some of the knee-jerk reactions to title reading.

I wish that the FITH redo had been put on the other disc, and replaced where it is with another brand new original.

I guess they're hoping the casual fan will think it is a brand new song.

I think you're exactly right that that's what they are thinking. But I think FITH is deserving of getting another chance. The first few tracks on Generations are very underrated - because Generations was handled very poorly. Even though it was given out at concerts, most copies were probably used as beer coasters.
