OT: ASIA - Phoenix

Mine has been on order and has already been shipped, but I couldn't wait another day for it to arrive -- saw it at Best Buy and picked up a copy that day! That was 3 days ago and I wanted to wait to post until I'd given it a good listen. I have to be honest... as long as I'd been waiting on this, many of the 12 song samples that were posted earlier did not excite me that much, and I was worried that this would be a mediocre album overall.

WRONG!!!

It's AWESOME!!! The samples didn't do it justice... This is a MUST for any ASIA fan. Song for song, it seems like they really took their time and put effort into making a quality album. None of the songs are rushed in the least, with most seeming to clock in closer to 5:00 in length, and a few top out over 8 min!

From the opening track "Never Again", this album grabs me and never lets go. I'd have to rate it very closely against the first two albums, and MUCH better than Astra. The classic ASIA is back!

First of all, I know since Howe originally left, they employed a series of more technical guitar players (and a few shredders like Mandy Meyer and Pat Thrall), but let me tell ya -- Steve Howe's contribution to the ASIA sound is in full effect here. ASIA needs Steve Howe!

John Wetton has a voice that can fill the room, and once again, it's used to full effect on this album. Nothing like the sound of Wetton's big voice amped up with reverb...

Geoff Downes is a master, and his work here is outstanding. One thing about ASIA that differs from bands like Yes -- for all of their talent, ASIA always remained remarkably restrained, whereas Yes came off like a bunch of soloists fighting for attention. So don't expect a bunch of highly technical wizardry -- just masterful playing which serves the song and the audience, rather than the ego of the artist.

And Carl Palmer -- always one of my favorite drummers. He flat out goes off in one song near the middle of the album -- may be track 8 -- in a run that builds and builds for quite some time. A real treat!

The whole album is excellent, and one song in particular that caught me was "Orchard Of Mines" -- a great song to slow dance with. I was surprised later to find that this is the only song on the album that ASIA didn't write -- it's apparently a remake of a song by a group of musicians called Globus (their story is interesting: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Globus_%28music%29 ), and the original can be found here:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7bG6UqoFlSU

I MUST say, I prefer the ASIA version with Wetton's huge vocals... incredible! Compare it to the original:

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0016D ... 245&sr=8-1

If you don't have this yet, or have been on the fence about trying it -- rest assured, it's awesome, and gets the Rip Rokken Seal of Quality and Approval. Can't wait to see them live in Louisiana this weekend!

Ive heard most of the tunes in their entirety. Great alb um! Never Again is probably THE best tune, IMO. The lyrics are simply amazing and especially the part in the chorus where Wetton says "Never again will I bear arms against my brother...Never again will I spill blood on any mother" The latter line..Iraq anyone?

Whattup, FlyGuy and MarkyJ? Glad you both dig the album as I do!

That's one thing I meant to mention but forgot -- the lyrics. Wetton likes to use imagery of war and death to really jack up the drama and impact of his songs (often about personal relationships), and I've always complete dug it. And for some reason, when he makes war references, I always get sort of an Ernest Hemmingway vision, which is cool. Yes the lyrics are tops.

The song "Never Again" is very reminiscent of hits from their first album, and is almost like a cross between "Only Time Will Tell" and "Heat Of The Moment" -- the opening guitar riff and the hi-hat cymbal directly afterwards are two good examples -- but the song stands well on its own. Sounds awesome turned up loud!

Oh, I also forgot to mention, the ballad "Heroine" to me is a virtual redo of "The Smile Has Left Your Eyes" -- very similar song, but I dig it!

I wish there were more rockers and up-tempo tracks...too much of it sounds like the mostly mellow Wetton/Downes Icon stuff. Not bad, but definitely not much like the first album, which was pretty much rockin' from start to finish. I really want to like this album but I'm just not into having that many ballads and mid-tempo tracks; it feels more like a Wetton/Downes or Wetton solo album with Howe guesting at times.

I am now officially pumped to hear this album. I've enjoyed Asia overall from the mid 80s until now but I've always missed that sound they had on those first two albums.

I completely understand, and that was actually one of my first hesitations on hearing all 12 song samples -- sounded way too ballad heavy. But these are great tunes for sure. Maybe not so many heavy tracks, but a lot of power running underneath.

Agreed, I bought it on a whim, thinking "yeah, it's gonna suck, and I'll get rid of it at CD Warehouse after a listen or two", but it's absolutely a keeper. It's almost as if it's an old disc that I pulled out of the archives, but yet it's not, It's got that classic Asia sound, but yet it's still new. Kind of like an old friend with new things to say. (that sounds cheesy, but that's what I thought) I liked it the first time thru, Go buy it!!

Don't get why they had to stop with the "A...A" titles - that's just the obsessive compulsive in me talking.

I just got the copy I originally ordered from Amazon in the mail today, so now I have two -- one for each ear.

They pretty much ran out of them, unless you want to go beyond 2-3 syllables.... LOL! It was a real challenge several years back just to come up with "Aria"...

But then...what differentiates it stylistically from, say, Wetton's Battle Lines?

If you'd ask Deano, WSU's better than Yale. ;)
