Just a (very) brief snippet - Journey is about 3/4 of the way into the clip...

http://ellen.warnerbros.com/EllenMediaP ... /ellen5170

Text from the site - "...Here's a way that we can all definitely become happier: listen to the newly reformed, legendary band, JOURNEY! We showed the amazing YouTube videos of ARNEL PINEDA singing Journey songs. The amazing thing is that Journey guitarist NEAL SCHON also saw those videos and invited Arnel to join the band. You will not believe the amazing sound of "Don't Stop Believing," when the new Journey makes their television debut right here on my show!"

Someone said they believed Journey performed two songs. That snippet showed SW was one. From the text, looks like DSB was the other. Shame they didn't get to play a new song from Revelation.

Journey played three songs on Ellen, the third being AATY. The question is which ones actually get aired for the show?

NO DOUBT. What a waste, to go on national TV and have to play stuff that's 25 years old...

Come on Journey management, pull some strings...

I agree with StoryTeller - the snippet is SW, and the text refers to DSB, so probably those two...

The people who were at the taping were saying they played After All These Years, Faithfully & Separate Ways.

I'm confused. :?

They performed Separate Ways, After All These Years and Faithfully. Only 2 will air...the first 2 I mentioned as far as I know. But what do I know. :)

The clip definitely shows SW. The text from Ellen's site refers to DSB, but that could be the YouTube clip that Ellen has shown a few times...

We'll find out tomorrow...

No, from a marketing standpoint I don't think they have much choice but to play the classic stuff. Yeah, they've got a new disc package coming out, but touring is their bread and butter. It's proving that the new guy can do the classic stuff is what's gonna put asses in the seats.

When they had Augeri, they were able to fly under the radar a bit without promoting that they had a new singer. Their names sounded similar, some thought they looked sort of similar (Perry with a perm), and the casual concert goer may not have even noticed the difference. The hiring of Arnel has made waves, so there's no doubt in anyone's mind that yes, Journey has a new singer. So proving that the new guy can do justice to the classic stuff is definitely a priority.

I see what you're saying but I'm don't agree with your marketing strategy, :D . Journey has this one deal with Walmart which they wouldn't have if they didn't re-record the GH's. If they want to have their future albums distributed by Walmart, they need to show Walmart their product will move off the shelf.

To that end, one classic hit and one new song would make the most sense. Hopefully, they'll drop Faithfully and air AATY, but I don't know who would make that determination. The show producers? Ellen herself? If she's into Arnel as much as she appears to be then maybe she'll kick her weight around and press for the new tune to air.

I feel good about the chances that AATY will be aired. After all, Azoff is behind this booking and Journey have a new album to promote. Maybe the 3rd song will be a web bonus feature. Kimmel and Leno both have their "Garage" and "Summer Series" acts record a couple songs. One airs, others are web bonuses.

Agreed...however, wouldn't it have been even wiser to do one new song (After All These Years) and perhaps a 3 song medley? Say...Separate Ways, DSB and Faithfully? That's what I would have done. 8)

If they get to play anything other than a couple classics, I'll be surprised. I doubt it is their choice. Thank God Stone In Love wasn't one of their options. AP needs serious work on that.

As far as promo for their newCD/DVD pkg. at Walmart, they should be pushing the NEW stuff, exclusively. Why would somebody (other than AP's homeland fans) want to go buy yet another remake of the classics when they can pick up the newly remastered ESCAPE DVD/CD pkg. with Perry on it?

I can't see casual fans picking up the Generations package based on hearing Pineda sing a CLASSIC, plus not being familiar with any new songs off of Generations. What good is TV exposure if you are going to play 25 year old songs with your third replacement singer? This appears to be more of the same old Augeri era thinking by either Schon/Cain or management.

I think I'd be a little turned off by a medley, unless it was during a long radio interview. Medley's walks a fine line between being cool and being cheesy. On a video performance, could come off as a contrived marketing attempt. I think, for legitimacy purposes, 1 classic and 1 new is the best way to go.

True, to a point. But is Walmart a paid advertiser for Ellen's show? I don't know if they are or aren't, but that would most likely lend a hand to what they could or could not play. And keep in mind, Ellen showed interest in the band having a new Steve Perry sound-alike, not the fact that they have a new CD coming out. Once they establish themselves with Arnel, then they'll have free reign to sing what they wish. The publicity, right now, is all about Arnel, not the new CD.

I don't see what Walmart being a paid advertiser has to do with anything.

Bands go on these chat shows all the time and you never see advertisements for the record label or even a commercial for the performing band's upcoming album. The host of the chat show just holds up the new CD and introduces them and they play. What they can or cannot play I'm sure is discussed and agreed upon by the band's management, Ellen and/or show producers before hand. Nothing happens unplanned on a pre-taped show.

The band might be there to promote Arnel, but I'll wager everything I have the new CD in Walmart is going to be mentioned, if not by Ellen, certainly by Arnel, Neal or Jon.

My prediction:
If they played AATY as some here have said, my money is on them airing that song as the second one, but not back to back with SW. They'll be introduced on stage, play SW, Arnel, Neal and Jon (or the whole band) will go sit on the couch with Ellen. Q&A session, followed by another guest and the show will close with Journey's second song and a plug for the new album available in Walmart.

From the pre-recordings of the show, there is no interview.

SW was only played during rehersal.

They're apparently on Ellen due to Ellen's fascination with Phillipino singers. See previous clips. Set-up??? Who knows.

I just hope they play AATY. Let's get a new song on there but according to TJF, Ellen will pick which 2 songs will air.

OK I was one of the crazies who actually watched the webcam during the tapings for the show.

No interview. Yes, it was a big surprise.

Set-up. It appeared Ellen wanted them on their show from previous clips, but what else was involved I don't know.

I think the only songs they sang during the actual taping were AATY, Faithfully and SW. No sound and no direct visual.

Supposedly Ellen will pick the 2 songs and it seems the rehearsal was taped as well but not in front of an audience.[/i]

EDIT: One other quote from someone who was in the audience standing next to Ellen when Ellen came to watch. Ellen's quote was apparently "these guys are incredible"

She wants to hear the oldies just like most casual fans. She has memories of being a teenager making out with her 1st boyfriend to a Journey song like a million others and wants to go down nostalgia lane..

Wait.. Boyfriend ? well... um maybe...
