Should be a monster. Gotta love that lineup. Don't know much about Chad Smith though, I guess that's Red Hot Chili Peppers?

Sammy Hagar is excited about his new supergroup, Chickenfoot, so much so that he says the band "could rival Zep."

Comprised of acclaimed guitarist Joe Satriani, Red Hot Chili Peppers's drummer Chad Smith, former Van Halen bassist Michael Anthony and Hagar, Chickenfoot have written "around eight or nine songs so far" and are due to enter the recording studio just before Labor Day.

"When people hear the music, it's Led Zeppelin," Hagar enthuses. "I know that's a bold statement, but it's as good as that." The Red Rocker then compares the group to another musical entity, one he has had some experience with: "It's ten times Van Halen, because it's functional - we all like each other."

For his part, Joe Satriani is jazzed about the project but is less hyperbolic than Cabo man Hagar: "We're having a very fun time. For years now I've wanted to do something with a real vocalist and a real band, and I came close a few times but nothing really panned out. This time is different. What I'm doing with Sammy and the rest of the guys feels right. We get together, we have a lot of laughs, and great things happen musically. I'm thrilled, and I can't wait to get our ideas recorded."

Interestingly, MusicRadar has just figured out that the intials of Chickenfoot's members - H.S.A.S. - are exactly the same as another supergroup in Hagar's past. Coincidence?

I love Sammy Hagar, so I have a preconceived notion that it will be great. I don't know about the comparison to Zep. I don't know if it's a good idea to come out of the box saying that your new band is going to sound like a legendary band like Zep. Maybe he meant that Zep fans would really like Chickenfoot?

Chad Smith is excellent. Some of you may not be familiar with him if you don't like the Chili Peppers, but he is tight. Sounds like a great band for sure! Gotta love the Red Rocker too!

That interview basically sums up why I can not ever get into Hagar all the way. Everytime he opens his mouth, he thinks he is the best. His solo career is good but overrated. Not to mention, he still doesn't understand his role in VH. He is not on par with the Van Halens. Or Diamond Dave.

Also, is this band another byproduct of Planet US?

venues for you or SJ to consider him a "real" Rock Star

Funny. I like his music both solo and in Van Halen and HSAS. I've seen him 2 or 3 times. As someone else stated earlier, I think he gets a bit delusional at times. He has good solo songs, but I think people have a bit of revisionist history when they think he was this huge solo artist. He did very well, but he would've come and gone if it weren't for Van Halen. His Van Halen days have been the fuel for his solo career of the past decade, as a matter of fact, probably more sucessful today than in the past. The Van Halen years, early on, gave him the capital to do his Cabo Wabos and tequila, making him a boat load of money. So, when he takes shots at the band, to me it comes off as a little ungrateful. Also, the first time I saw him was great. The second time I saw him, it got annoying (came off as a rockin' Buffett ripoff). There was a third time, somewhere I'm sure but can't remember when. If he stuck to the music (I like the solo live cd he did a few years ago), he probably would be fine. But his tequila gimmick and putting on everything the fans throw on stage gets old quick. Speaking of him opening his mouth, didn't he get some heat in St. Louis last year for blasting Budweiser or something.

Hagar had a solid solo career before Van Halen and a HUGE fan following.

I did NOT say he wasn't any good. I like him (excluding his sh-t talking interviews). I said he did well before Van Halen, but Van Halen definitely took him to a new level or several new levels. If it wasn't for that time also, he would've faded away shortly after. I don't begrudge him for his stage antics or business decisions either. It just wasn't for me, the second and third time at least. His delusional talk makes him overrated. Besides that, he probably gets his just due.

I don't know Barb, considering the recent concert events...but about 6-8 years, when the band released reissues of the albums upto and including 1984, record sales were evenly split between the Van Roth and Van Hagar eras.

This was considerably noteworthy, since the Van Hagar records had considerably less shelf time than the Van Roth records...and the Van Roth records received a bump in record sales due to people repurchasing the reissues.

So one could make an argument back then, that given equal footing, the Sammy era VH records sold better than the Roth era.


Right now, given the fact that the reissues have had 10 years of shelf time...and they're now parading around the country, pimping this 3/4 farce of the band....that Van Roth sales might be out doing van Hagar sales...

but, it's still all about personal preference. I loved both eras for different reasons....

I wasn't sure... just thought I'd heard that tidbit along the way somewhere.

As for Sammy needing to be grateful to VH, that's a crock of shit. There is no way on God's Green Earth that band would have continued that level of success without Sammy Hagar. Sammy is doing just fine. The cool thing about Sam is that he just has a great time, doesn't over indulge in bad things and loves music. He is arguably one of my all time favortie human beings.

I cannot WAIT until this band puts out a record.

I LOVE Van Halen, Satriani, and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers. This should certainly be a very unique and festive musical blend.

I'm willing to pre-order right freakin' NOW!
