Without looking at the article, I believe Anton LaVey made him an honorary member of the Church of Satan before he died. I haven't heard that he actually practiced Satanism. Anyway, there are two brands of the religion...One that only uses Satan as a symbol. The other one actually believes in him and worships him. LaVey's brand was the former rather than the latter.

I learned about this back in junior high... remember seeing the pics of him and Anton LeVay together, too. CPC is right, Anton's church doesn't actually believe Satan exists -- it's more of a hedonistic/humanistic focus, and I guess "Satan" is a symbol of that to them.

I remember watching that movie when it aired. I was very young, but I do remember there being a lot of "talk" about it.
