Deen's stock just keep going up for me...

Just got back from Walmart and I was reading all the band member "thank yous" in the liner notes and noticed this in Deen's list:

Steve Augeri - You are my brother forever and you are missed.

The two are obviously good friends, but still, what a show of class to acknowledge SA so warmly. Not only does the man sing and drum like crazy, but he's a class act all the way. It must have at least been a little uncomfortable for him to include that in there. Kudos Deen.

Good mention. I was scanning for an SP mention but didn't see one other than the general thank you to all "past" members.

I haven't scanned through the credits yet. But that's cool that Deen said that.

Steve Augeri was fucked over by certain people. It's great to see one of the band members thank Augeri.

I personally am grateful to Steve Augeri for his contributions to Journey, and he deserves far better treatment than a lot of people give him.

Wait til you see him sing Mother, Father on the DVD. It'll go up even more. He fucking nails it. They have Perry in there also.

Agreed, I loved hearing him sing it in Vegas & hoped it would make it on the DVD, so glad it did. His voice is simply amazing.

Well, Given the behavior shown in public by certain representatives of theirs, would it be so much a stretch to imagine what might go on behind closed doors?

Just watched it while I was on the bike and it was amazing. I'm hoping that they might think about releasing this DVD as a full-fledged production somewhere down the line with all the songs.... say Christmas? I would love to see Deen's After the Fall on there, among other things, like bonus features and such.

EDIT: Let's not turn this into another pissing match about Augeri, tapegate, Neal Or Jon's "gayness" or anything else. Just wanted to point out a classy showing from a great musician.

Well, he didn't have the clout that Perry had to say "I'm toast and can't do it anymore." He pretty much had to go along with the band.

You know, what amazes me is how many people think Augeri got fucked over. How so? Did Journey boot him from the band and find a replacement after he sang out of pitch in the 2001 vegas DVD concert? No. They fixed him in post. That's how far back his problems extended. All the way to 2001. In fact, they kept him in the band, continued to tour, covered for him with pre-recorded tapes until they got busted, then nixed the tapes and continued to suffer embarrassing performances and bad reviews throughout the Generations tour. Even then, after the end of that embarrassing tour, he still was in the band. It wasn't until the start of the Def Leppard tour that they finally cut ties, and at the very last minute no less.

Seems to me they stuck by him for a really long time. I mean at what point would firing Augeri have been acceptable? What is he, window dressing? The guy couldn't do the job! Nice guy? Sure! Did he have the skills to front Journey? Not hardly and Herbie Herbert agrees with me on that one.

Actually there are a lot of bands and singers that use pre-recorded tapes... but not on every songs I guess.

Deen always seems to have the most class out of them. Well, maybe Ross too, but he stays pretty quiet. Without getting into the disagreements above, I think the main difference is that Steve was probably pretty well liked within the band. Certainly he and Deen probably had a better relationship because they were the new guys to the band. Unfortunately, after all the touring his voice died. It wasn't as if they all got a fist fight and pissing match and Augeri said FU and walked. I am sure that no matter what douchebags the guys in the band can be, they all feel sorry for Steve losing his voice, regardless to whether they would ever admit it. Could they have handled it better, absolutely... but that just isn't the Journey way.

Agreed. Looking back, Journey treated Augeri extremely well. He earned several million dollars that he otherwise wouldn't have had they fired him when they probably should have. Yes, some of that $$$ came at the expense of the fans, but it was really only at the end of his run that it became a farce. Hey, "Mr. Awesome" had years and years to step down. He knew his voice was going as far back as 2001 and everything after about 2004 was really him running on fumes. He chose money over virtue. Most people do. I don't blame him. Just don't throw this "he's the classiest guy in the world" shit down my fucking throat. He, like the rest of them, sold out for the easy buck. Story Teller is spot on in this instance.

I don't think it was easy for any of them, especially when you've got that level of talented song writers, and musicianship. If any of the internet accusations are to be believed, it was probably one of the toughest things to had to do at the time. They just didn't have Arnel.

Now if Arnel throws a 'tude in the next couple of years, I would still pay to see Journey fronted with Deen. He's THAT good. Maybe call Smitty, if he's still playing drums by then!

Oh I'd LOVE to see where and how he got THAT much.

Hired gun from the start - he didnt make NEAR several. He may have made a couple, but that ain't several.

Keep in mind he toured behind 2 1/2 records that didn't move at fucking all, including 1 where they didn't even have a record deal and another where they GAVE away the CD at the show.

The amount of money is irrelevant. Kind of pointless to bring it up. I think we can all agree, however much money he made, it was a lot more than he made fronting Tall Stories, Tyketto and especially more than he made at The Gap, right?

Bottom line is, he didn't get fucked over. Neal and Jon were pretty loyal to him, even when he was a detriment (which, for me, was from the get go.).

Your chronology is off.
Tapes started being used very early on in the Generations tour. They continued to be used until the end of that tour, and were used once again as the band made their way overseas. There, they pulled out all the stops, utilizing tapes American fans hadn't even heard. These included "Keep on Running" "Dead or Alive" and "Edge of the Blade" (with Augeri now hitting the tail-end with pristine glass shattering clarity, when previously he traded it off Deen).

It wasn't until they came back to the states for the Def tour that they underwent a total media blackout and let Augeri sink or swim on his own.

Pristine clarity?? Augeri? Seriously? Are we talking Higher Place on the CBS morning show in 2001 pristine? How about that acoustic version of Liberty on the VH1 Classic show? That kind of pristine? I think we differ on the definition! lol... I know you like Augeri, but sorry, he started having troubles in 2001 (if not sooner) and didn't get better.

We also differ on the timeline, and here's why:
To my ears, the tapes being used to cover him were straight off the 2001 DVD (although I believe you when you say they probably tried to change that up after fans started catching on). I was at the Generations show in California where they started the tour and he was REALLY bad at that point. All the reports I read online of subsequent shows on that tour had people complaining left right and center, so I believe the sink or swim attitude was on the Generations tour and the tape covering happened during shows prior to Generations.

Guarantee you, they were pro-tooling Augeri left right and center on the album recordings too. He just wasn't a quality vocalist. Not in JSS's league or Arnel's league. He never belonged in this band. I wish Neal had more patience with the auditions process and took more time to seek out a more quality vocalist before starting the Arrival sessions.

Certainly. But I'll guarantee he had a lowball deal, as he should have at the beginning but not once the tours started making buck. And that DOES wind up mattering because he DID get fucked in the end.

Bottom line is, he didn't get fucked over. Neal and Jon were pretty loyal to him, even when he was a detriment (which, for me, was from the get go.).

Actually, every ticket paid $10 for the CD...even the shows that did not allow the CD handout. The boys made some serious BANK on the Generations Tour.

Corrected. But still, what kinda share you think Augeri got?

Split the profits off each ticket 5 ways...I'm betting 30 Neal, 30 Jon, 15 Ross, 15 Steve, 10 Deen. If the deal was THAT good.

Point being, ain't no way in hell Augeri's in any way set for life comfortably following his Journey stint, unless he invested the money and doubled/tripled it. Way way better than Gap money for sure, and I hope he's got a nice house, couple cars, and college for the kids.
