Here's an interesting take by Vanessa Franco.

Pre-flight safety announcement for Journey
By VANESSA FRANKO
The Press-Enterprise

Journey comes to San Manuel Amphitheater in Devore on Saturday and will take you back to the days of acid washed jeans and mullets. But if you go, here are a few things you might want to keep in mind.

Don't yell out for Steve Perry a la "Baseketball." He hasn't been in the band since 1998. We don't recommend yelling out "Oh Sherrie," either. That was a Perry solo hit.

Arnel Pineda is Journey's lead singer now. The band found him on YouTube. That means don't stop believing in those home videos where you hit the high notes in Europe's "The Final Countdown." Your dream of fronting a Swedish hair metal band could happen.

The quickest way to start a fight among Journey fans is to pose the question of "Which lead singer is better--Perry or Pineda?" Trust us, we posted a poll on PE.com and it got ugly.

Bring a lighter or download that app for the iPhone where it looks like you have a lighter. Journey's big ballads "Faithfully" and "Open Arms" require you to flick a Bic.

If you don't know the words to "Don't Stop Believin'," don't even bother trying to sing it--the Journey fans will get angry. Also, why are you even going to show if you don't know this anthem?

----------------------------------

All I can say is AMEN!

I am not complaining, but curious. I just received an email from San Manuel Amphitheater that Night Ranger has been added to this show and that the start time was moved up to 7:30. I love Night Ranger as much as I love Journey so this is awesome for me. I have no idea why they would make a change this late in the game.

I looked online and there are less than 500 seats available and over 20,000 lawn seat sold. Why would they add a band with sales like that? Plus, this late in the game how many more sales will it bring? I understand that this venue is cavernous, but this is just odd.

I am just a lucky dude I guess.

I think the addition of Night Ranger is an enhancement, which will bring more pleasure to the fans, so that's a good thing. I don't understand why the change so late either, but maybe that is what they were trying to do all along but it just worked out at the 11th hour. From what I have seen this year Journey is selling well, so I doubt they needed more sales. That should be a nice gig to be at! :D

I thinking if Journey is on their own they will be expected to play close to 2.5 hours. If the band is not feeling up to it for whatever reason, rather than cut the show sort and suffer the rath of fans and media for such a short show, they added Night Ranger. That way everybody's happy. I know I would be. I really want to see the Journey/NIght Ranger pairing. You guys are just lucky.

A poll between Perry and Pineda? You must be joking? I would hope to Hell it was like a Saddam Hussein landslide, in the fact Perry received 100% of the vote. Good FUCKING lord. ANYONE who votes for Pineda over Perry is a complete retard.

As for Journey selling well...maybe, but at who's standards? This place holds 60,000 for Ozzfest. I would guess they will get maybe 12,000 or maybe 15K tonight, if they are lucky. This place is in the middle of smog central, redneck heaven San Bernardino County, and Cajon pass...a truly ugly shitassed area. I am not raining on Pineda or the band, but we'll see tonight how well they actually draw. I wouldn't think they will sell out half the grass.

PS- NO ONE in their own right sober mind, can honestly vote Pineda over Perry. Even Arnel himself would have to vote SP.

This writer is clueless, as are most, with regards to Journey. How soon til this band hires a FULL TIME publicist, to get the CORRECT message to the media about the rights and wrongs of the bands' Bio?

Night Ranger isn't playing for free, they're going to get a considerable portion of the gate, at least 30% or even more, depending how long their set is. I think this is a management decision to try to sell more seats, not Journey's. You just don't give a portion of your money away to another group for no reason, especially when the tickets were bought to see your show. The lawn can be configured to seat 50k, maybe they're going to try to open up another 10k or so.
The original land was used during the US festival and OZ Fests have been held there regularly. Slayer and Marilyn Mansion just headlined the Mayhem Festival there tweeks ago and it was sold out (65k seats). A little late though to bump the start time. A lot of sites still show it at the 8pm.

NO WAY Gunner. No fucking Way NR gets 30% of the gate. I would say Journey is getting 50, and Heart 30-35%. NR is a beer band for the early non drinking arrivals, who get to sit in the smog soaking sun that is Cajon Pass.

Just my now inebriated opinion.

Fuck, the best thing to do is count the cars on passing freight trains rolling through Gils Country cafe in Devore. I bet this one asshole I could drink an ounce of beer for every freight car in a particular train. I was soon trying to pound 129 ounces or so of beer in one chug. it was Heaven, I mean, it was tough, but fun.

What they should do is have Jack Blades come out during Journey's set and play Higher place wit them. He wrote half that record. That would be cool as the other side of the pillow.

They're doing a dozen shows with Journey at the end of he tour. Do you really see NR doing a 25-75 split? During Heart's last show with Journey at Red Rocks, they played a long set. If NR plays over an hour, I can't see them getting less than 35% of the sales.

Bar band or not, Journey better bring their A-Game because Night Ranger can rock.

As much as I despise Journey and their players, they are solid as granite live, especially when they play the SAME EXACT SET LIST NIGHT AFTER NIGHT. The folks are going to see and sing along to- the Hits. In my mind, boring, in the casual fans mind, exciting, if not trivial.

That's why they're so good. They never go outside the box. They give you vanilla every show. Fortunately for them, that's the majority of Journey fans favorite flavor.

They know this and they know that's where their bread and butter comes from. If they change it the fans are either going to boo, throw beer bottles, or go take a piss.

I don't think it's "vanilla" to play 5 songs off a new album in a 100 minute set (one year removed from the album tour), plus reworked instrumental breaks in 3 of their biggest hits (Separate Ways, Open Arms, Any Way You Want It). That's not "vanilla."

What's not vanilla is the day they don't play DSB, OA or Lights. Let em just play the whole Revelation disc 1 only and see what happens.

I'm not going to fault them for it. Its money in the bank. I was happy to see them last year, if only for one song, WYLAW. When they have a new album out, maybe I'll see them again. I encourage every one to see them at least once with Arnel. I f you've seen them with Perry, once with Arnel won't kill you. As the majority of proffesional reviews hve said, he's not Perry but he is very, very good.

Okay.

That's like asking Albert Pujols, in his prime, to quit playing baseball and try hockey just because he's become too good at baseball and it gives his fans too much pleasure.

Dude, Arnel shouldn't be your target. hat guy is great. Humble, appreciative and so forth. it's the band he's with and his obnoxious fans who are the problem.

They sincerely believe AP should have been the Super Bowl Halftime Show last year and that he is better than Steve Perry.

His fans are the dickheads, not him.

PS- The Springsteen fans got wind of the Pineda uproar (Super Bowl BS)and basically laughed it off. They all basically said that Journey was a cool band and that Pineda had pipes, but stopped there. Journey will never play the Super Bowl.

But why would they do that? We've already come to the conclusion that the majority of Journey concert goers are "casual fans". Using myself as an example, I dare say a significant portion of "casual fans" lost track of Journey after TBF and haven't heard of ANY of Journey's CD's (including Revelation) since, let alone any individual song therefrom. Heaven knows none of Journey's newer music is getting any air play so there's no real way for "casual fans" to familiarize themselves with most of Journeys post-Perry work. While I agree it only makes sense that Journey mix in more music from their latest CD (which they are presumably trying to promote), mixing in some of that post-Perry-pre-Arnel stuff will likely be met with blank stares.

I was trying to figure out seating for this show since it holds 65,000.  It looks like over 15,000+ seated of which 97% is sold plus over 20,000 lawn seats sold according to a previous poster. This could be one of Journey's biggest shows (ex festivals) of the last 10 years. I'm assuming this show will also get a lot of walk ups.

Wait, no, this does not compute. Journey is no longer supposed to be able to do this! They are supposed to be relegated to the state fair circuit only. What's going on here? 8)
