Damn near perfect! I remember getting that dvd for Christmas over at my parents house. Threw it in the dvd player and remember my brother and cousin being hella impressed with this performance too. LOL, comments like..........we all thought Journey was such a chick band, I don't remember them being so f*ckin' tight! I full on agree, stellar performance from all five, especially Perry.

Other than the fact that when I played it with Frontiers, Jim Gober used to call it "Mother Fucker" because it would clear a room out really quickly! It's one of the best, haunting, emotionally driven songs they've ever written and to me is in their top 5 songs. How's that?

Other than the fact that when I played it with Frontiers, Jim Gober used to call it "Mother Fucker" because it would clear a room out really quickly! It's one of the best, haunting, emotionally driven songs they've ever written and to me is in their top 5 songs. How's that?

Just for the sheer difficulty in singing it and the total band's operatic performance pulling it off in a live musical setting, I have to agree with GIJim. But, truthfully, I didn't think much of the song when I first heard it on the Escape record...didn't care much for SP's screaming.

I was more moved by the touching subtlety of OA. Tomulator described this song perfectly in another thread, the begining lyrics "your heartbeat against mine" and the way SP emoted throughout the song pulled on your heart strings. I still get choked up whenever I hear the song -- SP's version .

Mother Father is pretty damn epic. When I first heard Escape, I didn't really like it too much. It's definitely a grower. The live version, though, is something I've almost always enjoyed listening to. It's such a symphonic sounding song without actually having or needing symphonic instrumentation.

Open Arms, on the other hand, is a bit too saccharine and melodramatic for me. Not really subtle at all in it's delivery, really, at least from a vocal standpoint. Faithfully pulls off the whole power ballad thing in a more mature and subtle way, I think.

To me, the closest song Journey has to "Mother, Father" is "What I Needed". I would have LOVED to have heard Perry on that song. It's the highlight for me off of Revelations.

Take it 29 years later...and Deen does a great job with the song live.

He does do a great job, BUT his vocals are thin and nowhere near as powerful as "The Voice".

Mother Father.... One of Journeys best songs ever delivered... Steve Perry at his best.

prob in my top 5 journey songs and Perry nails this one!

Deen also does it with perfect pitch, perhaps better control, but he doesn't project nearly as powerfully. Perry can't be touched on this one ... by anyone.

I think Deen is more suited for the Pre-Escape stuff,. Perry was more of a tenor back then and it fits with Deen's voice perfectly. Arnel bellows at times so he fits the post-Escape material very well. I think the Escape tracks are actually the hardest to cover as Steve at that time was at his peak vocally with a great tonal balance that's hard for either Deen or Arnel to replicate fully.

Really? I thought he sounded a bit odd on Escape. Still excellent, but with some quirks. It really did sound like he was in the middle of a transition between the infinity/departure voice and the Frontiers/etc. voice.

Really. The vocals on Escape were pop/rock at it's best. Perry had the clean tenor but now with added bass while losing a bit of the piercing highs. Not so many vocal acrobatics but not yet to the smoker's voice that was on it's way in with Frontiers.

But the bass that came into his voice between Escape and Frontiers just blows me away, love it. Although I love his ROR vocal tone too.
