Journey to play entire Escape album on next tour

Should Journey play the entire Escape album from start to finish on their next tour? It will be the 30th anniversary of their only #1 album

Just thought it would be a good idea since a lot of the other classic bands have been doing this lately. Bruce played both the Born in the USA and Born to Run albums in their entirety. RUSH played the entire Moving Pictures album. The only problem is that Dont Stop Believin would be played in the middle of the set when it is normally left for the end of their concerts.

REO did/is doing this w/hi~infi, as well. As much as I love the concept, the
bands that are doing this still contain one minor ingredient that would make a tour
like this of interest, to me!!

IMHO That just is not effective without the original singer.
Id rather just play the album.

Oh and Styx ...I think I read they are doing something
similar. Bits and pieces of PO8 and GI, w/no DDY   ... the clips I saw weren't bad,
just NOT, and never will be, the same!! But I've never checked out
this Gowan fella ...I will listen to him!!

It's both albums in their entirety, not bits and pieces. It's a pretty cool idea that would be great if DDY were there. That said, the current Styx is usually decently enjoyable to see and I don't mind Gowan. He works much better vocally on some songs than others, and he'll of course never be DDY.

Hm, I don't think it came near me. It's certainly nothing I'd make a road trip for, but I'd see it for a decent price.

You couldn't have titled this topic any better? Probably 90% of the people who clicked on this did so because you posted it as a fact.

Hm, coming to Toledo Nov 6. I might make the trip for that... it's an EASY hour and a half drive. I can visit a lot of family there [sisters, aunts/uncles, grandmother], so I wouldn't make the trip solely for 1/2 Styx. I should see if Behshad wants to join me  .

Just saw this show on Friday and really enjoyed it. They did all of Grand Illusion and Pieces of 8, I was just surprised how many songs I didn't know.  Great visuals though. Styx always seems to put on a really enjoyable show.

Correction: Bruce played more than Born to Run and Born in the USA. He played The River(2 album set), Greetings from Asbury Park, and also Darkness on the Edge of Town.

I saw the show in Philadelphia that included Born in the USA. I didn't like it, as much as I would if it were a "regular show." I think the reason is it was such a popular album, that I didn't need to hear the title track, and some of the other hits again. I would love to hear an entire album that wasn't as commercially successful. With Journey, that's what this will be. Escape is great, but the people have to hear the same old shit again. If they play this, they will have to include the tired songs of WCN and OA(Yuk). I think it would be cool to hear Lay it Down live(see if Pineda can actually hit those notes..good luck with that) as well as Still They Ride. Playing DSB in the middle of the concert would be ok if they do this. Bruce played Glory Days and Dancin in the Dark in the middle and it was ok...however, it would have worked better at the end(DSB would too I believe). The one good thing about this is Journey will be playing something new and different(Lay it Down, Dead or Alive, Keep on Runnin and Still They Ride). That will unseat some of the other Dirty Dozen which in my opinion, is a good thing.

One more thing. After seeing an album played in it's entirety, the good thing was when I knew the next song was "Cover Me" which I don't like, I went for piss and beer. The flip side is knowing that an upcoming song that you do like keeps you locked in. However, the element of surprise is gone with this format.

Two bands I saw live do an entire album front to back were,

1) Boston - Third Stage (1986)
2) Pink Floyd - The Wall (late 1980's)

Both worked well, IMO.

If they actually wanted to play the entire album and solve the other issue, they could do what Tyketto did a few years ago--which is play the entire album, but not in order and spread out over the course of the concert. Not quite the same thing, but the same effect.

Although, if you advertised that the Escape album would be played front-to-back, you could do the typical thing of....8-10 songs as set #1, Escape as set #2, and a few songs as an encore. Pace the other songs correctly, and you could get away with it without losing the audience.

My general theory is that they will focus on the new album as opposed to 30-years-of-Escape for the tour, at which point this all becomes a moot point.

"focus on new album" --> play 4-6 songs live like they did for Revelation, Generations, Arrival, TBF (basically the 1998 tour, which had quite a bit--at least to start with), etc. I believe 4 was the general number of new songs for Revelation, with occasionally more on some of the European shows where they were playing longer sets.

The point behind the comment is if you are doing a tour to support a new album, you don't confuse audiences and play the Escape album in its entirety. You would do that on a specific tour dedicated to Escape. Instead, you play your normal set, and throw in some new songs to hopefully convince your audience to purchase the album.....or if you are really smart, throw in the album with your ticket and raise the price $10 to cover it. With a cheap slipcase, you are talking pennies with the amount of attendance over a tour, and it's money in the pocket. Why more bands don't do this is beyond me. Easy money.

As it stands at the moment, I'd be somewhat shocked if the band actually announced they were going to play ANY album live in its entirety.
