Live in Manila - Personal Quality Modification

Hey folks. Last night, my friend downloaded VLC Media Player for me and I was dicking around with the equalizer and I sort of made Live in Manila sound alot better than it is. It's not saying much, but it truly shows that the poorest sound in the mix is the crowd. I can bring up the bass and the guitars and vocals, but any of the other ambient noise like the crowd is still low. If anyone has this, they should give it a shot, or download it. My friend downloaded it for free (sorry, off the top of my head I can't remember where) and I recommend you try to make the show a little better to hear. A few key things to remember: Keep the audio track on 5.1, and then set the VLC's audio DEVICE on 5.1, then go to the equalizer and switch the setting to Live first, then mess with all the channel sliders to an integer that sounds the best to you.
My Setting:
Preamp: 11.0dB
60Hz: 0.0dB
710Hz: 0.0dB
310Hz: 11.0dB
600Hz: 11.0dB
1Hz: 0.0dB
3Hz: 18.0dB
6Hz: 0.0dB
12Hz 18.0dB
14Hz: 11.0dB
16Hz: 11.0dB
I hope this is useful to some, but I do know I'll likely get some flack too.

What sucks is we know they recorded the show with the intention that it could heard as a lossless format like DTS-HD Master Audio, basically, just like if you were there. But until the show comes out on Blu-ray, you'll have to settle for this type of gerryrigging to get some decent sound from the DVD.

This shows you just how much Journey and their mgt care about the fans. Cheap bastards. They sure do make it hard to like the band....seriously, does Journey ever go out of their way to make the fans happy?

Yeah, I would be surprised if it even made it to Blu-ray.
I noticed one of the main complaints in the Live in Manila thread, though, is the crowd... and I noticed something... at the end with the final bow, suddenly they threw the audience noise up tenfold compared to how it is during the rest of the show... :S The loudest (and that's not saying much) the audience gets in the DVD mix is during Separate Ways when AP tells them to scream. I've seen the fan videos, and it's way more epic. Pretty sad.

Probably not since they visited that boy with cystic fibrosis?

What gets me is that they paid the money to get it recorded that way and then don't use it to it's potential. Why even fucking do it?

Amazing - the Houston Summit DVD, nearly 30 years later, still has the best live sound of the band to date. Y'all agree?

I agree. Everyone was great in Houston! Steve could have done the whole thing a capella and it would still beat the other DVDs.

Better than 2001 Vegas? That's a toss up for me.

Beat me to the punch, damn!
If you slow-mo it, Auggie's lipping is more obvious than it is... though, him singing with the mic beside his cheek and still sounding crystal clear is the smoking gun. But it's still fun to watch him slide onto the piano, doubtless giving Friga a heart attack.

He had to break a hip bone on that flop onto the piano. Everyone that's seen that DVD had to say OUCH!!! He, evidently, overestimated his vertical leap.
I still love that show, live or not.

I was more concerned for the piano. Maybe THAT was a catalyst for outing Steve-A

I would have loved to see Jon have another thing to have a sobbing attack about.

Sad to say, I have watched both AP concerts only once each. Vegas the most, followed very close by the escape tour, then all the boots. But I watche AP, and was like nope, turn it off.
But I will say I have listened to the dvd rip of Man. a few times.

Same here.
But the past is just that, Steve singing or not, is in the past. It's a dead horse. Look forward to his misic more than Journey's right now.
Heck I like to see Journey top the new Two Fires cd...I doubt they will.

I love Arrival DVD. I don't care if there's studio magic. It is a great concert on DVD, even though a couple of the classics aren't my favorite with Augeri. But a great setlist. Loved loved La Raza Del Sol and Fillmore Boogie and All the Way. Great sound. And Jon was really on fire, which was lacking in Manila DVD. Naturally, Neal was in top form.

That must be how Jon got Perry out of the band! That piano's a destroyer of hips!!!

The Whale, a hip destroyer.
Now that I think about it, what other bands of that era are putting out DVD's that are at least this good and this often?
