I was able to see Jason Kelty sing a few years back. Ehwmatt and I went and drank the house down. Jason has an incredible voice and, although he hadn't sung Journey tunes in quite a few years, he sounded excellent. And, man, what a nice guy. Paul Soos was a great guy as well.

Here's what's left of the Escape cover band's website.

http://members.core.com/~e5c4p3/theband.htm

There's a link to that song on the site.

I posted the Perry vid because Kelty sounds just like him. Have you got any video of Kelty yet, SJ? It seems the guy is shy.

Paul was supposed to post some footage, but I don't think he ever did. As far as I can tell, the band disbanded. They played Journey, Styx, Bon Jovi and a few other acts. Man, where they good.

Thanks. Well, at least we've got the above clip and the Java video. 8)

I remember some threads started promoting the return of Jason Kelty to Journey cover band, and you guys were going up to see them. I think it was LiquidDrummer (or was it Aaron) that started threads about those guys. One member signed on and started posting, then disappeared. He said he was going to post some songs of future shows...but nothing came of it.

It was Dan and a couple of other people. They did go to the show, and said even though the guy running the sound that night did a shitty job, the band sounded good. Then they disappeared.

Dan and I indeed had a great time seeing those guys... I think it was back in December of 08 now. I braved one hell of a PA/Ohio snow belt snow storm to get back to Cleveland in the dark to catch those guys... and between the booze and the good music it was WELL worth it. I do remember Paul coming on here and saying the band had disbanded and he had moved to Cincinnati or something like that. At any rate, they aren't together anymore as of Paul's last posting, whcih was at least 6 months, if not a year ago now. That's a damn shame.

Was this the guy that went deep into christianity, and said he couldn't do secular music any more? But then came back and said he'd think about it? ...or something like that?

later~

I really think Jason was/is the closest we will ever hear anyone get to Perry. His vocals were amazing, he sang on pitch, and his vibrato was awesome! It's a shame he won't use those pipes for this type of music anymore. :? I talked to him a few times 3 or 4 years ago, and he seemed like a really great guy. Maybe we'll hear him again someday.

Found a clip on You Tube. If you search for Moments In Time Quartet Jason Kelty you will find it. I think this is Jason. If so you can really hear the Perryisms around the 1:30 mark.

I know it's weird that it is a barber shop quartet, but Olmstead Falls is nearby some of the clubs his most recent band was playing. This show was also in a church. It does look like him compared to the old photos from the old Escape sight, just older with shorter hair. It definitely does sound like him. I think there were some pictures on the most recent cover band's myspace that showed him with short hair as well.

100% positive. I met the guy. What a voice. If you can isolate his voice, it sounds exactly like Perry when his voice was still in top shape.

man that makes me so sad...I guess if he's happy doing that than good for him. I never got to see him sing journey. But I can tell you I was very impressed with that mp3 of lovin you is easy. As someone that sings in a journey tribute I wish there were more singers out there with mr keltys tone. Sounds great.

Something a bit more tangible may be required here.

Can't believe you doubted me MG. Just kidding! I was just happy to finally see some video of him singing something. Thanks for the confirmation Ehwmatt and SJ. I would have loved to have seen him get a shot for Journey. I always thought him or Tony Harnell would do a great job. Tony is doing some shows with Queen Symphonic and sounding awesome by the way. If anyone wants to check it out there are some videos on You Tube.

Saw Escape perform in 97 I think it was, while waiting for the TBF tour to happen.

It was this really weird experience - the band nailed every song...and I talked to Jason for a minute after the show and it visually felt really like 1979 Perry was standing in front of me. Almost creepy he looked so much like him. The look, the voice - he really is SP 2.0.

I know jason and this is him and was recorded in 94 for a local cleavland charity cd. I have tons of crappy recordings of them live. He is the closest ever. I had posted them all here before.

Edit,,

Here is this only thing I can find of him lone. Singing in a barbershop thing. When he opens his mouth for a 10 second solo you here the Perry. He cant help it.

He is too the right.

I saw them more times than I can remember and you are right. It was just so close and not just him. The whole band. It was him and the guitar player that had it nailed just too close.

At the time I would chosen them over an Augeri show WITHOUT hesitation. They sounded more like Journey than Journey. Period.

I remember we tracked down everything that was availible on this guy a few years back. Even had links to his band's website and what not. Definately nails a young Perry, with a little bit of Getty Lee and Rik Emmett thrown in too.

Yeah, it was really weird hearing an Escape era Perry singing Separate Ways! :?
