Tron: Legacy

Caught a preview screening of the Tron: Legacy last night. Separate Ways was used in a cool scene of the flik. Good choice of placement and it wasn't just a two second snippet under a dialogue heavy scene. The song held the stage.

As for the movie -- eh. Gorgeous looking. This year's Avatar in terms of visuals, but the writing is mediocre at best. You have to turn off your brain.

so far, rotten tomatoes has it at 49%...Meaning the the critics are almost divided down the middle.

Regardless, I'm seeing it.

Skyline was utter shit.
If you're lumping Tron in with it, me no want.

Skyline was the absolutely worst "real" film I've ever seen in my life.

Tron wasn't great in terms of story and writing but it was Citizen Kane compared to Skyline.

Think I'll go see this movie tonight with my son! :D I may have to go buy the old movie first though, so I'll know what the hell happens. Does it explain any of the back-story?

You'd be good to re-watch the first one, but it's not absolutely necessary. They explain some, but wished I had of re-watched it first.

Dug the Separate Ways spot - it was PERFECT...

Yeah, Tron had tremendous action scenes, but cringe worthy dialogue by some characters - and the movie completely lost me during the "Dinner" with the pig and green beans...what were they thinking?!?

Also, couldn't help but think about how much better the 'lore' of The Matrix (which was probably influenced somewhat by the original Tron), was compared to what they were going for with Tron... (Plus it was PG, so come on)

Anyone else find it funny when Jeff Bridges talked? Reminded me "The Dude"

And talk about terrible marketing. How many copies you think they could have sold at the time of the new one coming out? I don't get it. :?

Disney pulled all the DVDs because they're going to make it in some sort of limited edition Blu-Ray thingie.

If you have geeky friends, the file is out there.

Saw it in 3D at the El Capitan last night, on IMAX. They kicked it off with a Tron-themed laser show. Great effects, was disappointed that more of it wasn't actually in 3D! Spent the train ride home trying to explain to my dad what the story was. We saw the original together when it first came out, I have it here somewhere. Think they'll do another sequel?

Disney made SURE the original movie was no where to be found for purchase before this movie came out because they didn't want it to affect Legacy's ticket sales. Nothing to do with some special release. They were worried. This movie cost 170 million. If it doesn't over perform over seas a feature film sequel is not likely. That said, they're doing a 3d animated tv show ala The Clone Wars on some cable/satellite cartoon channel (not cartoon network). Not sure when it starts, but the show is going to cover the years Flynn spent in the computer fighting his war against Clu.

Actually Disney puts all of their movies, especially animated ones, on a moratorium for something like eight years after its release to video. That might explain why the original Tron was nowhere to be found when the sequel was being released to theaters. At least, this is was the practice that Disney was doing years ago when I worked in video stores in my twenties, and I'm sure that practice hasn't changed since then. By doing so, it helps Disney to keep the demand of their movies high.

.....and to add to that, it makes more sense to wait and re-release the original Tron with the new movie once Legacy is released to video. That way, they can have special box set packages or special releases and so forth.

They blast 80's music really loud (they kicked off with Juke Box Hero) and periodically the beginning of Separate Ways will come on...the lights start flashing and a crack to a secret panel behind the Tron game starts to flash! It breaks into Bruce Boxlightener's dialog from the movie, until they resume the previous track and the lights go back to normal. Wild stufF!

Interestingly enough, in anticipation of this...I had ordered the movie from netflix earlier last year....and ripped it.

I showed it to my 7 year old son...and he turned into a tron lunatic. He literally had watched it 7-8 times before we went to disney world in august....then after seeing the tron-o-rail down there, forced me to show it to him a few more times...

by the time Legacy came out, he had SUCH pent up excitement for the movie that it could have been a steaming pile of dung and he would have loved it.

As it was, it was a very good movie and I (and my son) enjoyed it thoroughly.....

totally rolled my eyes at the seperate ways cameo.....as I could've called it a million miles away.....but the movie was cool, none the less

Watching the new movie (and hearing Separate Ways pipe out in the "actual Flynn's arcade"), I can imagine what the producers of the original movie were hoping for when they commissioned Journey to write a song to play in the original arcade scene in 1982. I'm sure they were hoping for a Separate Ways or a Chain Reaction, and not a mellow track like Only Solutions to wimper out during that arcade scene. It wasn't until I walked into Flynn's that I remembered what it was like to play those games with 80's arena rock POUNDING from the speakers! It was such a huge part of the arcade experience, and Only Solutions was never gonna hit that mark.
