Right this is not a comparison thread!!!

I'm just interested in what everyone thinks the singers from Journeys past and present sing best live.

Still They Ride
or Faithfully

Augeri

JSS

Gotta say, all the Journey singers have been amazing.

But more than any of them since Perry, Pineda just seems to FIT the most as Journey's vox!

I think his voice is best suited for the material; sounds the most natural.

That's what I felt watching the vids.

That's my $0.02! :)

Great list...

Nice call on Augeri with Remember Me.

My favorite JSS moments came during Dead Or Alive and Chain Reaction...I don't think I ever saw him do Message of Love.

I loved JSS on Message of Love. Send her my love was also a good one for him. Augeri did a decent Lights.

Gregg Rolie's best song might have been You're On Your Own.

And the band never seems to play the song anymore. What's up with that?

That is excellent, when I saw Journey with Jeff he was brilliant.

I didn't care a lot for Rolie's singing as lead singer for Journey, but "In My Lonely Feeling" www.youtube.com/watch?v=u6G1uxzHp28 is one of his better perfomances. I liked his Perry duets a lot though.

Perry - Separate Ways or Mother, Father
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-7uGcACBuIo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VlFVc7qDUog

Augeri - Remember Me
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ocqUSTrrq3E

JSS - Message of Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELD-d-h_qfs

Deen - Mother, Father

Arnel - What I Needed or One More
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF9qaoVgKqw
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=otCEkFmT4T0

Though, I suspect I might soon replace Arnel's best live song with one of the new songs (Chain of Love sounded absolutely amazing live from the videos so far).

Hmmmm never heard JSS do that tune before. He does do a good job. More soulful intentional delivery.

Agree with some of your views here, but Arnel and 'One More' DO NOT go well together. He absolutely crucifys that song like nothing i have heard before.
To each their own though. :D

Definitely noticed that from day one too. Being my number one criteria for vocalists, he quickly became one of my faves. I think that's why so many of the Perry fans came back.... and then left with him. He brought that same soulfullness of Perry's back. I have consistantly heard that comment about JSS in Journey.

Meh. I wasn't introduced to the original Perry version until a while after hearing the band play it with Arnel at the festivals. In my honest opinion, Arnel's version is nothing short of epic, but as you said; "To each their own".

However, I DO think 'Chain of Love' will probably surpass both OM and WIN as Arnel's best live performance (unless another one of the new songs that's yet to be played live surprises me).

This is categorically false. There was actually a drop in attendance when he came board and the sold out shows that were occurring with Augeri all but stopped. Moreover, the guy didn't even garner enough fans to fill local saloons on his solo tour. Granted, he wasn't in Journey very long, but he didn't bring any significant number of fans "back." Hell, Perry himself didn't even draw huge demand for his own solo tour, but I'm to believe a baritone singer no one had ever even heard of did? Bwahahaha. You've been hugged one too many times, Deb.

So many...LOL...I took her too mean the 3 or 4 loons on this site that sucked up to JSS and said he his Perry-isms were a tribute to SP whereas Augeri's natural voice was blasphemous. They then ran for the hills upon his dismissal and at the sound of a voice that for them finally put the nail in the coffin of Perry's possible return.

 And you, poor baby, were never hugged enough. :P

I'm confused, on the sentence before that, where was it said that Soto would outdraw Perry on solo tour? :? And you keep bringing up the small JSSB tour of a few US shows four years ago, not quite getting your point on this, never have? Neal's little tour didn't go over that well either, hell weren't some even cancelled? Outside of the classic band name, not many do. Hell, alot of classicrock solo artists are playing small joints like saloons, etc. Even Rik Emmett, so again........what is your point???

You had said earlier that Soto brought "so many of the Perry fans back." And that's simply not true. Hell, I don't think Perry himself brought all of his fans back with his solo tour. But you're absolutely right about the "name" being bigger than any individual member. Herbie tried to tell Perry that, but he never got it.

Deb wrote: Neal's little tour didn't go over that well either, hell weren't some even cancelled?

Allow me to explain why. They had zero original music and the band's chemistry sucked!

Yup. And, I'll go one further and suggest that of all of the singers since Perry, Jeff's delivery of this one is the closest to sounding exactly like Perry - to my ears anyway. AP's delivery of OTY is a close second - live or studio. He just seems to be able to channel Perry's voice on that one better than any of the others.

As far as Stevie goes, I'd have to say Higher Place. He and Neal really seemed to have chemistry when they were playing that one.

And although this one is a Perry/Rollie duet, FTW/Anytime will always be untouchable. Rollie's deliberately-slow delivery of the lyrics and his laid back approach to that one is his and his alone. When they played it on the 30th anniv. tour featuring Cain/Augeri, it was almost cringe-worthy.

Deen does a super job on the ones he sings - so much so that his performances of the songs he does have become almost mechanical, but I don't mean that in a bad way whatsoever. Perhaps a better description would be painfully consistent. He sings them the same way everytime and does a flawless job every time. That said, there are two that stand out in my mind as being incredibly well done: Faithfully http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s55Py6a5YQs and Where Were You. Unfortunately, Where Were You was only included in the set list for a short time before they cut it. Not only does Deen sing it well, he also does a great job on that complicated intro Smitty came up with which if memory serves, it was either Cain or Schon that described it this way, "Yeah, I don't know what's up with that intro, he likes hitting the toms a lot for some reason" (describing Smitty's syncopated bombastic intro.)
This is Patiently and Where Were You together. WWY starts at 3:50. And now that I think about it, Deen does a fairly decent job Patiently as well.

Wow, thoroughly enjoyed that......especially Where Were You. Just love his energy behind the kit, and Deen's got a raspy quality to his vocal delivery that I just love. Thanks!

As for Perry, the 3 toe-curlers that IMO nobody can touch, are Still They Ride, Only The Young and Girl Can't Help It. I know it's 3 separate eras, Still They Ride is mostly his vocal delivery on that one, and Only The Young and GCHI is mostly the vocal tone and well, delivery too.

OTY ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wtEBx-Bj ... ure=fvwrel Don't think I've ever heard such perfect tone/pitch before. Right from the first chord, that is probably the song that puts a huge smile on my face the most of any when it comes on the radio. :D
