I know this has been discussed before, but I wanted to know which songs you thing translate better in the live shows and which you like better from the album.

I was never much of a fan of Separate Ways on the album, but it's one of my very favorites live. This is from the Paris show on 7/7.

Mother, Father I think is much better live. At least the Houston '81 version. I liked the "extended version" Journey did on their last tour of Open Arms - I thought that was pretty neat. Still They Ride is an awesome live song, and Don't Stop Believing.

I think Separate Ways is equally as good live and studio. Since that is the song that really got me completely hooked on Journey, I have always been more of a fan of the studio version. Certainly in recent years, Schon and Cain have added a few tweaks that make the song more interesting in concert. I'm sure there are several other songs people like better live than studio, but Mother, Father, Still They Ride, and Don't Stop Believin' are my top three live Journey songs.

Infinity, Departure and Evolution tracks all sounded better on the Captured but that may be because of the changes in Perry's voice in the latter.

Escape and Frontiers sounded the same whether live or from the studio with the exceptions for Open Arms which has always sounded like shit live and the stepped down performances of Faithfully.
Songs from ROR, TBF, Arrival and Eclipse are far superior as studio cuts than than what I have heard live so far.

I've always felt Edge Of The Blade to be weak live compared to the studio version where the guitar for me is way better.

Captured is the embodiment of the idea that live!Journey > studio!Journey, though I think much of that decreased after Escape was released; Perry was much more theatrical and melodramatic live and it diminished the songs for me.

The Live In Manila version of 'Open Arms' is the best I've ever heard of that song, tho.

I really enjoy the rework of OA that they did in Manila.

I've always thought "Open Arms" translated poorly in a live setting, especially with Perry.

I get how OA can be lackluster live and I definitely agree with the Perry part, but I really think Arnel knocked it out of the ballpark in Manila. His noticeably deeper register than Perry added real power to that so-called power ballad, and Neal's newly added solo was tasteful.

I was floored by the solo the first time I heard it. It should have been put in the song from the beginning.

I like the song live, but more often than not, it goes flat because the audience doesn't get it. Get the right crowd, it goes over VERY well.

I've seen some crowds in the US go ballistic also. For example, in North Carolina, Charlotte usually is party town and Raleigh thinks they are at the symphony. It's not just a Journey phenomenon either--I've seen it with other bands. Not sure what causes one crowd to generally be better than the other, but it has an effect on the show because of the give-and-take band/crowd relationship.

Escape is a very mediocre song. Borderline gay.

you're on the mark there Gids....Foreign crowds really no how to rock out. Heck, I saw Europe (lol) on Paladilla, Glastonbury Festival I believe, and they played The Final Countdown and the crowed reacted like Led Zep took the stage with John Bonham back from the grave playing drums!

I've always preferred Keep On Runnin' and Wheel in the Sky live over the album versions.

I like everything better live

I enjoy the live version of 'After The Fall' from Greatest Hits Live. It has extra oomph to it, but mostly I prefer the recorded versions. I wish there was a live performance of Perry performing WCTNGOF somewhere though, because I would've loved to have heard it.

The video of Separate Ways that Rick posted was really great! I'm getting really excited for the Toronto show... I also enjoyed the extended version of it that they played in '09. I can't help but feel that it sounds heavier when they're tuned down. It makes a lot of difference but not negatively.

The Manila version of OA is awesome.
Escape doesn't really do it for me live, except for Houston. It's one of those ones that Perry really owns vocally.

MY favourite live song of all I think would have to be I'll Be Alright Without You from the '86 tour. Not the version from the GH DVD that's obviously been sound-edited. I like the raw version that I believe was used as a bonus track from the ROR reissue, because somehow Perry knew how to make the evident flaws turn around and sound okay.

I've also gotten pretty attached to Arnel's live version of Faithfully. On a good day he outsings Steve on it.

I also love DSB from Houston and Manila (minus the extended bits, never liked that preachy shit... although they're attempting to shout out to certain people going through hardships, blah blah blah, it tries too hard to categorize and pigeonhold what the song is about when it's fine as it is, a song that gives hope to EVERYONE).

I can't say I'm in love with ANY of Augeri's live stuff.
