Deen: "If he (AP) leaves, we're not doing this anymore.

In a recent article in the publication titled, phillyburbs.com, the author, after retelling AP's rags-to-riches story was interviewing Deen who is quoted as making a couple of pretty bold statements regarding the band's future.

"Castronovo believes the band will be together as long as Pineda is part of the act. “If he leaves, we’re not doing this anymore,” Castronovo says. “We’re not looking for another singer. We couldn’t find anyone like Arnel again. But he’s with us and it’s a great time for us.”

The entire article and interview can be read here:

I really like Deen and understand what he's saying, but at the same time, it's not up to him to make such statements. If it's still feasible for Journey to continue on without Pineda, financially or otherwise, you better believe the band would continue on.

Neal said it as well. Other than Perry, Pineda is their last singer, they can't and won't go on without him. I understand they said the same with Augeri but that was back when they had wiggle room (no pun-attended.) This time, the guys are older, they made 2 discs with a wonderful story of youtube and rags to riches with Arnel and some say the Journey stone is fractured because of the lead singers so, this it it. Arnel will be your last lead singer and it should be.

Exactly! I'm pretty surprised he actually made the statement to be honest with you. He's never been disillusioned or secretive about his place in the pecking order/line of seniority with Journey and has always been the first one to refer any questions or individuals seeking statements to Neal and/or band mgmt. He's Neal's "yes man" and has no qualms leaving the decisions to someone else. As he puts it, "It's way, way easier that way!" And has also made him a very wealthy man.

A couple of months ago, I forget now which interview it was... Deen and Jon were being interviewed in Germany or Amsterdam.... I forget... Anyway, the guy interviewing them asked if they would come back and play another festival to which Deen spoke up and told the guy, "If you want us there, all you have to do is ask and we'll be there!" I just laughed to myself and thought "Wait 'til Neal sees this clip....." And I just know as Deen left the interview he was kicking himself in the ass for making that kind of statement. Neal would probably see the clip and just look at Deen with a big smile on his face and say something like, "Ahwwww... isn't that precious..."

Deen's lying - plain and simple. As soon as Arnel shows signs of vocal fatugue, Neal will be back on YouTube. Schon had his eye on a few replacements during Augeri's touring years. I don't think Neal will put the cash cow to pasture until he can no longer play.

Agreed on what Neil would do, but is Deen lying or does he simply believe what he's been told? Would Neil tell Deen his true intentions if Arnel continues to fade? In the end isn't Deen just a hired hand as well?

Poppy cock. I believe what they say until it's time to not believe what they say. We are not to that point yet, so everything is just mental masturbation anyway.

These guys reformed Journey because they had nothing else going on. Bad English self-destructed. Hardline never took off. Michael Bolton abandoned them. Schon's solo efforts gained some critical raves, but no mainstream success. I don't know what Deen truly thinks, I just know that Journey isn't going anywhere.

I don't think Deen is lying...nor do I think he's being duped by anyone. I think he's playing the press game...which he should.

What's he supposed to say? "Yeah, we love Arnel...but if he left we'd just get somebody else." That'd just be stupid.

If Arnel starting developing vocal problems at the end of the current tour they would ride him like they did with Augeri until it was written in cement that they can't continue then they'd find a replacement. The band isn't going to say well yeah when Arnel's voice goes we'll be looking for a replacement because it will show Arnel's place in the band.

It's a cash cow. But, one could argue that Neal & Jon don't really need any more cash. They could fall out of the touring game tomorrow and be very wealthy men the rest of their lives. So, aside from cash, what would be another motivator?

To keep the Journey alive. I believe they still enjoy what they do. When that stops is when it ends.

I don't think Deen is speaking out of turn. I think he's saying what they're all collectively thinking and have probably discussed amongst themselves. That said, it's what they're thinking RIGHT NOW. Doesn't mean that won't change should some unforeseen event happen that takes Arnel out of the equation. They'll either go with closing up shop, or consider another singer, but they'll do so in that moment with an understanding of the situation as a whole.

I tip my hat to you sir for disregarding any and all of the sinister reasons that many people would not only tend to believe but want to as well. The reason you suggest is just too... oh, I don't know.... what's the word.... sincere. And really... isn't that the way it's supposed to be...? So refreshing to read something posted about Neal and hat his motives, ambitions, and aspirations that aren't perceived as being Satanic.....er... I mean evil and self-serving.
Kudos!

Yeah, like I said in a thread just like this one about a week back, I don't personally believe that they would not continue on.

I can't see them passing up a final album and tour that they could bill as their farewell tour.
There would be too much money to be made with a farewell album and tour to pass up. Steve Augeri, JSS, Kevin Chalfant, Sammy Hagar, Hugo, whoever, they'd find someone for a farewell tour.

I agree!! Anybody else thinking the recent Perry buzz is around the RNRHOF?? Journey's getting pretty hard to ignore and we all know it's all politics regarding the nominations...which mean both Perry and the band know what's going on. Just another thought.

Journey ‘Totally Down’ With Steve Perry Joining Band on Stage
by: Billy Dukes

Steve Perry is welcome back on stage with Journey any time, guitarist Neal Schon said in a recent interview. In fact, current lead singer and Perry soundalike Arnel Pineda would be “overjoyed” if Perry were to show up for one of the band’s tour stops.

“Honestly! He’s not just saying that and then like, walking in the other room and (saying something different),” Schon tells Artisan News. “I’ve always let the door open. I made it a point, the last time I saw and even spoke to Perry, when we received (a star on) the Hollywood Walk Of Fame … I wanted to make sure that people saw me asking him right there, ‘If you ever feel like you would like to, and you’d like to come on stage, it’s always an open door. Just come and jam. There’s no pressure.’”

The rest of the band seems to share Schon’s sentiment, although keyboardist Jonathan Cain cast doubts on anything more than a one-off taking place. “No, because he really sealed the deal back in ’98 and said, ‘Don’t expect anything from me, y’know, we’re done. You and I are done.’ So I know that he keeps his word and I would not make that call because I know that he’s quite happy with the life he has. And it’s pretty rigorous out here. What we do is very rigorous, and he doesn’t need it.”

Fans itching to hear Steve Perry will have to settle for Journey’s ‘Greatest Hits Volume 2,’ in stores on Nov. 1. This collection of hits was chosen by Perry, although Cain, Schon and the others registered no objections.

Yawn.... When they make the official announcement about the reunion, I'll be at that press conference. Just look for the blue guy... I'll be the one holding my breath!

Speaking of hot.... have you seen how hot it's been here this past week? A hundred and fucking seventeen yesterday with some 116's and some 115's thrown around here and there just for good measure. I mean you do, believe it or don't, get fairly well acclimated to the heat after living here for a few years but it seems this past decade every God damn year is hotter than the previous. 2 more years and Oregon HERE I COME!!

Meet..? Meet who.... the band? Not trying to sound like a snob but I've been there, done that and.... wait.. you mean "us" meet... sorry I misunderstood.
In that case, no, not really.

Damn! I just looked at the tour sched and saw they're playing Vegas on the 8th. My youngest is on fall break then and we're using that time to take what will likely be our last family vacation together (before she turns 18 and moves the Hell out of my house) and we'll be in San Diego. I'd love to have been able to though.
