Arnel Pineda still with Journey; gears for 2012 shows


MANILA, Philippines - Filipino singer Arnel Pineda said he just finished doing more than 90 shows in South America and Europe as the lead singer of Journey, contrary to speculations that he is no longer part of the American rock band.

"Yeah, yeah. Ika-4th year ko na with Journey," he said in an interview on ABS-CBN morning show "Kris TV."

According to Pineda, he and his group performed in Chile, Brazil, Argentina, Puerto Rico, Venezuela, Peru, Mexico, England, Germany, Scotland, Northern Ireland, Belgium and Netherlands.

Pineda became the newest frontman of Journey in December 2007. He was discovered by Journey's Nel Schon via YouTube.

Big shows in 2012

In the interview, Pineda shared that Journey will be having big shows next year, including one with American country music band Rascal Flatts.

"The next tour will happen next year. We will have a two-show crossroad thing with the Rascal Flatts," he said.

"It will happen on the third week of February in Nashville. They will sing a couple of Journey songs, then we will sing their songs," he added.

Pineda said that by March, Journey will start doing their three-part show in South America with bands Styx, Loverboy, Foreigner and Heart.

That's kind of cool. So, apparently rumors of Pineda not being able to tour for about 8 mos are untrue?

This is cool. I don't know Rascal Flats songs well, but they are kind of a cross over country act and the singer has a high tenor voice, right? So it will not be much of a reach for Journey to do their songs, and this is a very popular country act.

A lot of country music fans also love a lot of 80s acts, and quite a few country acts have been showing love for Journey like Martina McBride, Colin Raye, and some others covering Journey songs.

This is a smart move for Journey, and hey, finally we will hear something different than the dirty dozen! So what if it's Rascal Flats songs.

Lots of popular bands cover others. lol, good analogy. There's still some pretty twangy mainstream country music though. I can't dig that stuff too much. Rascal Flatts are pretty good though.

Thinking of Arnel trying to mimic a country "twang" is one of the most unintentionally funny things I can think of. LOL.

Is this one of those televised Crossroads things that airs on CMT? I know Rascal Flatts has played with TOTO before.

Yes it is.

I think the mashup that met with the most success was the Taylor Swift/Def Leppard One. The DVD from that show sold very well, helped a lot because of Swift's young fan base really buying anything she puts out there.

Check out the video on MR's frontpage with the guy doing country Scandinavian style. The accent and continuous reference to deep fried chicken was too much for me.

They should have paired Journey up with a hot female country singer. Underwood, Lambert, Twain if anyone could ever get her to perform again. That said, RF are a good, talented, popular country band. This could be big if done right.

I wouldn't bet on this being any major coup in band promotion or anything like that. It's not actually a new trend and it is on CMT, not ABC or FOX.

I think the trick here is to get paired up with a "Young" hot chic. I agree with you about Lambert, she would have been perfect. The younger singers are the ones with fans that will buy anything and give another artist a purchase just because of the tie-in with their own favorite singer.

The cool thing is Rascal Flatts are one of the most popular music acts with young people, so this will be good for Journey.

Miranda Lambert or Taylor Swift? This would have brought out cries of sell out for sure and Swift was laughable on the Def Lep stuff. On the other hand, RF are almost the country version of Journey, just with a twangy voice and a fiddle or banjo thrown in occasionally so it isn’t quite straight up classic rock musically. However, a duet ballad with Carrie Underwood might have worked well.

Journey should do something with Tim McGraw. He's probably one of the most soulful singers to ever perform country. It would make up for that shitty Def Lippard collab known as "Nine Lives"/
