Deen Officially Not Returning

Deen scrubbed his tweets saying he was not coming back. This led me to think maybe he would return. Neal has set the record straight on FB.

"I love Deen but he is busy and we are going to try something new."

I am actually glad for his sake he is not.
Journey is a train wreck that easily lead Deen down a bad road.
My guess is Arnel also does not want anything to do with them as well but bounded to do so.

And here all this time I believed Ross, Augeri, Smith Arnel and Deen to be equal full time members,
but they were just realy hired guns with the name (and the profits) going to Jon/Neal (well actually their wives)

I assumed that is what the arrangement was...but I didn't think Schon/Cain felt they were interchangeable with any competent musician, or that they did not contribute anything worthwhile.

If they would have expressed that attitude back when they hired Augeri, I would have been saying they should just end it, because Journey is a BAND, not a Schon/Cain project. "Beyond the Thunder" is NOT a Journey album.

Nothing in the lawsuits that I read indicated this. You have a source? Or are you spreading propaganda? Ross accuses Schon/Cain of cutting him out of the picture to increase their own share of concert revenue.

Sure sounds that in 1997 Schon/Perry/Cain owned the trademark an with his departure Perry receives 50% and then 25% of what Schon get for concerts, merch, ext (I bet he got $ for album revenues as well.)

It is hard to believe that Schon/Cain after Perry's departure and all the $$ he got that they would give all the new members (and Ross) an equal cut. I guess more of that will come out.

Either way Perry must be losing tons of coinage this year.

Absolutely nothing in this article refers to the shares of Ross or Smith.

You are correct, but i wonder why Schon/Cain would just give them equal share when they both were fired a decade before.
Hope I am wrong. Will so some more digging.

I believe one of the lawsuits said that under Nomota terms all members got 1/5 of touring revenue. Could be wrong.

Maybe Ross and SS can get Gregg and Kevin back along with Josh and make another Storm CD. Would love that. Or make a Music of Journey CD. If Kevin and Gregg wanted noting to do with it, get Augeri back and do a Music of Journey CD.

I would love for there to be another The Storm album with Chalfant, Rolie, Ramos, Smith and Valory. And like you said, if they couldn't get Chalfant back, then make it Augeri. Sadly, I doubt that it would happen.

It would be funny to see The Storm touring at the same time as Journey with Schon, Cain and Pineda.

If this is true that Perry is losing tons of coinage, this is the perfect time for Perry to rejoin Journey for one tour to re-establish himself with 1/3rd of the tour revenue along with Neal and Jon. And then Perry can retire again and still receive 1/3rd of tour revenue for future tours. I know it's a long shot, but this is our only chance of seeing a reunion. It depends how badly Neal wants Perry back for just one tour. Neal would have to get Jon to agree to sign away 1/3rd of future tours to Perry to make it happen.

Perry hasn't toured since the 90s and even that tour was cut short. It's over. He wouldn't even sing live on TV while promoting Traces. Jon and Neal would be more than happy to do a casual laid-back writing session. Perry has no interest in doing anything with either of them. Traces, imo, remains one of the most disappointing and forgettable "comeback" albums in history.

I listened to "Traces" about 3 times when I first got a copy of it, but I haven't listened to it since because it was so boring, and Perry's voice is more or less shot.

I wouldn't have even remembered the title of the album had I not seen you name it in your post.

I think the voice is still there, but the sequencing of the album is terrible. After "Sun Shines Gray" it's just one downer after another. Really bad.

I think Traces is a great record. If you take it on what it is and was intended to be (not a Journey album) - a very personal look into where he has been and is now, it is incredibly satisfying. The songs are really well written, the vocals are amazing (still perfect pitch, untouchable feeling, and the best phrasing in the biz) and the use musicianship and sound quality are at the very top of anything you hear today. This record sounds so much better than most records today - its really beautiful sonically. And there are so many layers and so much nuance to this record. I still enjoy it more every time I listen to it. I loved it, still love it, and can't wait to hear his next record and I do believe there will be one (although perhaps delayed because of COVID).

Saying "take it on what it is" basically means lower your expectations and accept a substandard product. I've never done that previously for Steve Perry or Journey, why would I start now? Everything you are saying about top shelf production is just bullshit. It sounds like what it is - Perry fucking around in his basement.

All that can be true and it can still be a boring record. I was quite surprised by his voice, I did not expect it to still be that high, but his vocal melodies and arrangements were not good. They did not flow.

LOL. As the saying goes, you are entitled to your own informed opinion. As I already stated, Traces sounds like what it is - polished basement demos. Most fans already knew that Perry w/out Journey was not that good. Traces removed all doubt.

When you think of the whole catalog, as an objective music listener, of course SP solo is not as good as with Journey. But we have to take what we can get. As far as I’m concerned, something is better than nothing.

Traces is mostly a downer album. But we heard from quite a few fans who have posted on the board that this album (and songs) touched their hearts deeply. So who are we to discount the significance of Steve’s latest work?

I'm just giving my opinion that it mostly sucks and it's the most disappointing comeback album I have ever heard. If people have an emotional connection to it, that's great. Strange Medicine was also introspective and somber, but it also soared. Traces just isn't balanced imo.

I wasn't directing my post at you, TNC. Just sort of thinking out loud.
I didn't exactly give Traces a ringing endorsement, either. Too many sad, gut-wrenching songs, I believe I posted.
But, then, I don't like but a few songs on FTLOSM. Now, TBF .. I love!!!!
Seems like I preferred hearing SP singing w/Journey much more than his solo stuff.
So, the earlier post was really me analyzing internally, to myself .... reacting to all that's been said about Traces.

I think with a different track sequencing Traces would be alot better. Leaving Angel Eyes off the regular release was really stupid. Fun uptempo track.

Agreem=, a traces w/o the Beatles song, We Fly, October in NY and Blue Jays fly would have been much much better
