Journey and Steve Inspired Me!

Postby Infinity Vocalist 2010 » Tue Oct 12, 2010 3:31 pm

Hey, I'm new to the boards. My name is Bryan and I am a teen from Ontario. I am a huge fan of Steve Perry and Journey. Admittedly, I am a late fan. I have been a fan of them since Summer '08, but only because I connected the dots that Journey left in their prevalence in my life. I knew the songs like AWYWI, DSB, Open Arms, Faithfully. But you could NEVER have told me that the same band that did DSB did AWYWI. Well, in the spring of '08 I heard a song by a band called Journey (I forget which one, pretty sure it was Separate Ways) ... Hmm, I thought. Nifty name for a band, I would have called my band that too. Then DSB became a soundtrack to when I was courting a girl in a (short) relationship. I asked her out during this song because I loved it. Then on someone's MSN I saw display of their music player: "Don't Stop Believin' - Journey"...

Lightbulb! I've heard that rockin' band before and they're cool. I want that DSB song. So I went and bought the Greatest Hits, a CD I now treasure. Then I recognized the songs like OA and Faithfully and LTS (the na-na's) and AWYWI. So I told my best friend, a metalhead but admittedly only to me and a few others, a Journeyhead as well, and he let me borrow (and eventually sold me, but why?) the Revelation album and LOVED it... I think only the fact that I'd gotten into both Perry and Arnel at the same time is why I don't bother judging who I like more, I love them both, they are both amazingly talented in their own right.

Steve Perry is godly in my mind. I went and bought his Greatest Hits to expand my knowledge, and to further my vocal training. I sing lots of Journey and this, along with my grade 11 vocal class, has helped me with my range extremely. I can do anything from Johnny Cash to The Police. My dad says I sound like Steve. I sometimes try to emulate a little, just to get some inflections right, and it all comes natural, I just snap into Perry mode when I need to... It's not a problem to me.

Bottom line, Journey and Steve and Arnel have all changed my life and expanded my range and inspired me to chase my music career by being in the school rock band, a little country duo with a cousin, and my own band, Infinity, my ultimate salute to Journey and Steve Perry, and a very personal solo album. Heck, I've even gone through the Jeff Scott Soto scenario with a band, something that chaps my ass, but I carry on.

Cheers, everyone, and I will be posting some of my work very soon!

You guys are too much. I would hope that I end up working for more than 10 years. This is my calling! Only a few things I'm good at: Singing, Acting, and Writing. Writing as in songs, fiction, scripts, etc. I hope I end up like Dennis DeYoung, with his voice still golden after all these years. You won't see me petting my cats and cutting off my hair and smirking mockingly at the fans who visit my website... That's totaly what steveperryonline looks like!

I agree, I think I have the best inspiration I could get. The music of Journey saved my life.

Thanks for all the kindness, folks. My school's band is doing Be Good To Yourself, and naturally our music teacher told me I'm likely going to do it, probably because I'm the biggest Journey fan in my school. Last year we did DSB and well, it was a disaster. Not my fault. If a self-proclaimed musical genius like our music teacher didn't switch the key around in between each performance (this was our Christmas show, 3 shows in one day) then I wouldn't have ended up blowing out my voice  my parents took a cringeworthy video of the nighttime show, the worst one. Anyway, if I get a QUALITY performance of BGTY then I will see if I can put it on YouTube for you folks.
