Right like a little Cainism. Dean's "band of gold," "you stood strong/stood your ground," "state of grace (though I have this feeling that was a Schonism)," "faded photograh/memory" is "Goddammit!!!"
"I love almost everybody."---Rocky Balboa 1990
"Let's reform this thing.Let's go out and get some guys who want to work and go do it"--Neal Schon February, 2001

Correct. Let's look at that word a minute...

Main Entry: big·ot
Pronunciation: \ˈbi-gət\
Function: noun
Etymology: French, hypocrite, bigot
Date: 1660
: a person obstinately or intolerantly devoted to his or her own opinions and prejudices; especially one who regards or treats the members of a group (as a racial or ethnic group) with hatred and intolerance

Intolerance and hatred... having strong opinions about something isn't intolerance or hatred.... remember Teena Brandon? Remember Matthew Shepard and what happened to him? THAT is intolerance and hatred. Show me where something like that ever happened to a christian for the sole reason of that person believing homosexuality is a sin. When was a christian person ever killed for having this belief? Those people being KILLED for being gay... THAT is hatred and intolerance and bigotry. Disagreeing with christians' belief about homosexuality is not bigotry. It's just that - diagreeing.

Except you won't find the catholic church ever saying they hate or are intolerant of gays. Notice in this case the thread was started for, they use their reasoning that "they are practicing sex outside of marriage" and that goes against the churches teachings. Which sure, fine, but what about all the other hetero parents doing the same thing? Do they get judged and treated the same way? That was the problem I had with that. Treat them all equal then.

You have to remember too, priests and bishops are people just like we are people and they carry their prejudices and judgements just like everyone in this thread has. So depending on which one you talk to, you get a different message. My beloved priest we had for 8 years was asked by a friend of mine about her brotherinlaw. She told the priest that her and her husband take the bible literally where is says "we are our brothers keeper" and they believe homosexuality is wrong because the bible says it, and if they are their brother's keeper, then they need to get him to realize acting on his homosexuality is wrong. . So she told the priest this, and asked him what should they do, are they right. His response was "love him" That's ALL he told her to do was "love him" and they did not take his advice. I believe they are estranged to this day over it, something I cant' understand AT ALL. But the priest we have now, and for how he is SO judgemental, I KNOW his response would have been quite different.

Well, that's the thing though - to an atheist, it isn't the same meaning and there is no "offense" over "taking god's name in vain". It's just a word, and it has become probably the most common "curse" word (along with "hell", I guess). it has pretty much lost its "punch" with most people anyway. Like for me, I grew up hearing it all the time. My parents never used heavyweight cursing in front of us, but we'd hear damn, god damn, and hell a lot.

And that was the exact problem I had with it. I said that same thing here a few pages back somewhere.... No one says jack crap about the single parents who live with boyfriends/girlfriends... they don't get involved in the straight parents' lives at home (and in the bedroom) that way. Those children were booted out because of what their mothers ARE, not because they're having sex without the benefit of marriage, and to hide behind that LIE that way just makes them worse. If that were the real reason, then go after all the other kids whose parents are not married and who are having sexual relationships. See how well that goes over.

I know. I was about the second person to post in this thread and said the same thing. My problem is the inconsistency. And I KNOW there are divorced remarried couples and single parents practicing premarital sex in plenty of catholic schools. but it seems like they only act on the "laws" when you have a "strict" priest or bishop involved and that's unfortunate. Trust me, there are PLENTY of priests who are working under bishops who they STRONGLY disagree with. But they are powerless when they have a very strict and conservative Rome behind them. It's a problem to me. But as long as I had my happy niche, I was fine. I need a new niche:( And there are divides in the church. Sure there are. But change takes a long time. I often wonder if there will be a "U.S. catholic church" divide someday. That won't be "roman catholic"

Woah woah woah. Seriously, the dogma that is; no sex outside of the marriage, is just plain retarded. It gives the person real low confidence, and makes them ashamed of their own body - and that's fucked up. I've had a lot of clients that's just like that.

And sex is natural, and not only for making babies or whatever. It's not sin, it can be one of the best things in the world, both physically and mentally.

Horsecrap.

Who says it isn't?

It's not sin,

Where does it say violence is required for bigotry up there in the own definition you posted? I'm no friend of the Catholic church and I'm not religious, but religious people take just as much flak from the "enlightened" "tolerant" people for being intolerant as any other group does. That's just objective fact. "But they deserve it!" some will say... well, what's good for the goose is good for the gander and so gays may "deserve it" too in the eyes of those who totally disagree with their lifestyles.

Also, if you wanna play the literalism game with definitions, gays aren't a "racial" or "ethnic" group, so I guess you can't be bigoted against gays per this definition?

Nowhere. But where did I say violence was required in defining it? I didn't. I was merely citing some of the more extreme cases as examples of the kind of hatred we're talking about here? On a non-voilent but equally bigoted level is the story that sparked this thread. Hatred and intolerance being acted upon.

Where have people been assualted... or to use the non-violent example, where have peoples' children be kicked out of school just because their parents believe homosexuality is a sin? Me disagreeing with a person's opinion, such as Dave's, is not bigotry, it's just Dave and I disagreeing about something. Now, if I hurled names at him left right and center, or acted in a hateful way toward him, that would be a different matter.

My point was, there is constantly action taken against gays - laws passed to prevent them from having things or doing things - kids being taken out of school, kids being excluded from proms (there was yet another story on that a day or two ago...), and of course the more extreme stories. Taking action, or supporting such action, is bigotry. It's the same as making blacks ride at the back of the bus or use their own drinking fountain... "you are a lesser group a people and we don't like you so we aren't going to allow you to...."

Telling someone you disagree with them or you don't like what they said about it or how they feel about it is not bigotry.

No one passed any laws about gays kids being taken out of school or gays going to prom. Those were decisions made and in the case of the prom, I believe it was a public school, so I imagine legal action will follow.

I'm fine with gays having basic rights, especially marriage and power of attorney etc. That doesn't bother me one bit. But, don't expect me to sit there and advocate for a group who I vehemently disagree with and whose behavior I find disgusting. If they get them, great. If not, oh well.

I really hate the black civil rights analogy for gays. It's used all the time and I find it ridiculous. I'd personally be insulted if I were black. I think that really does the history of black oppression a tremendous, egregious disservice and makes the gay plight look a LOT worse than it is (especially now in modern day). Yeah, there are isolated instances of gay oppression that are as bad as black oppression (Shepard etc.), but the sheer scale, duration, and scope of black oppression absolutely dwarfs gay oppression.

People forget or at least don't acknowledge that when this dogma was passed down, people could get married when they were fuckin 12 and 13 years old. Nowadays, most people at least go to college or community college til they're at least 20... tack on frequent graduate school (esp in this economy), you're lookin at people who don't have any incentive or financial means to get married til they're 25, 26, 27... and that's assuming they FIND someone.

Humans are not hard-wired to abstain from sex until they are 26 or 27.

Listen up, Pope Benedict; I've had loads of clients who's almost afraid of their own body, cause their retarded parents have tought them a dogma, straight out of the dark ages. I don't care what you think or believe, but you people bring that shit onto your kids, without giving them a god damn choice.

Sex is one of the basic needs of any person; old, young, fat, skinny - whatever. Supressing that basic need, is wrong on so many levels.

Not if you pick the right woman

BS Lynndog. They all start out "right." They do it all, every door possible...then, and then...marriage.

You know why the Bride is smiling as she walks down the aisle after she gets married? She knows she has sucked her last cock.
