Dear Friends -
Yesterday, I joined our Super Bowl Champion New Orleans Saints at the Fort Jackson Wildlife Recovery Center in Buras to rally support for coastal Louisiana. We were originally scheduled to host the Saints in Baton Rouge to celebrate their Super Bowl win, but we talked with the team and asked if they would join us in Plaquemines Parish to see the impact of the oil spill on our wildlife and fishermen and also help lift the spirits of the people of coastal Louisiana. The team graciously agreed and the entire Saints organization showed up in Buras yesterday to tell the people of Louisiana that we will overcome the odds and win this war with the oil spill.
The Saints had an opportunity to view many of the oiled birds that have been rescued as a result of the BP oil spill. We also visited with the residents and fishermen who are impacted by this spill and as the New Orleans Times-Picayune reported, I told them that “this is a war to protect our way of life in Louisiana. And just like the New Orleans Saints overcame the odds, Louisiana is going to win this battle to save our coast.”
Indeed, the Saints are a living testament to why Louisianians believe in comebacks and know that victory can be born out of perseverance. After 43 long seasons, the Saints beat the odds and with the strong support of the Who Dat Nation, they won their first ever Super Bowl. These Super Bowl Champions are heroes forever, but today, we have new heroes along our coast fighting the oil spill. Our coastal parish presidents, fishermen, National Guardsmen – these are the heroes in this oil spill disaster response. Like the Who Dat Nation supported the Saints last season, folks are lining up behind the people of coastal Louisiana to protect their way of life. While we face incredible challenges from this oil spill, we will dig down deep yet again and persevere to win this war.
Earlier in the week, Plaquemines Parish President Billy Nungesser, Grand Isle Mayor David Carmardelle and I took BP Managing Director Bob Dudley out on the coast to see firsthand the impact of the oil spill. We’re glad that Mr. Dudley came with us because it was important for him to see the devastation up close in order to understand the impact of the spill on our state and our people. After the tour, we talked with Mr. Dudley about the importance of fully funding the six approved segments of our sand-berm plan and he agreed that BP pay the full estimated $360 million cost. Mr. Dudley announced that BP was immediately wiring $60 million into an escrow account set up by the state and he also committed to paying the balance of the $360 million estimated total. Indeed, the Times-Picayune reported that BP will “fund the project through to its completion.” We will also continue to push for the approval and funding of the entire 24 segment sand-berm plan.
We did not simply wait for BP to send the funds though to get moving on this project. Our state coastal protection agency already started to work closely with Shaw and Bean Dredging to get to work on the six approved segments of our sand-berm plan to fight the oil miles off our coast rather than in our fragile wetlands.
This week I also viewed clean-up operations conducted by the Louisiana National Guard. The National Guard has placed oil suction equipment on barges that can transport vacuum trucks into marsh areas to clean up the oil. Of course we also continue to move forward on many other state projects to contain the oil, including Tiger Dams, landbridges, sand fill-ins, Hesco baskets, protecting marshes, East Grand Terre dredging and freshwater diversion.
BP’s decision to finally fund the sand-berm project is a good step, but we must continue to be aggressive in our efforts to contain the oil and there’s no question that we will continue to hold BP and the Coast Guard accountable. For Louisiana this is a marathon and a tough fight, but like the Saints, we will step up and win this war just as we have always done.
Sincerely,
Governor Bobby Jindal
