Huge iceberg breaks off Antarctica

Scientists say a vast iceberg weighing billions of tonnes which broke off the Antarctic continent this month poses a potential threat to the circulation of the world's oceans.

They say the 2,500 square kilometre iceberg, floating south of Australia, could block an area that produces a quarter of the world's dense and very cold seawater, known as bottom water.

This water drives ocean currents, and scientists say weather patterns could be affected in decades to come.

Dr Neal Young is a glaciologist at the Antarctic Climate and Ecosystems Co-operative Research Centre in Tasmania.

I didn't know "glaciologist" was a profession! I'd have worked harder in school!
I bet he makes fat bank for sitting around doing nothing but....monitoring glaciers.

It needs to be towed to California for a new fresh water source.

So does that mean shit's finally gonna start warming up around here? I'm still waiting for global warming and so is my car - looks like it got bukkake'd by old man Winter and his pals after sitting idle for 20 minutes, fuckin hell.

Move to Maine it was 40 and raining here...with 52 mile an hour winds last night. Kids home from school due to flooding and power outages.

I thought it was supposed to snow in February in Maine....guess not! 8)

and I agree, would be an interesting gig, being a glaciarologist... the science part though...
and lab work would be long and time consuming!!!

metric system is more simple and used in 90% of the world. I'd say start getting used to it , cause it's gonna stay around a bit longer than Betamax tapes ;)

It would be like trying to teach Americans to speak French instead of English. We don't resist it because are "dumb"... we resist it because we are smart! Why the fuck would we want to change something that works just fine to learn something that doesn't work any better?

Chinese is the most widely spoken language in the world. Does that mean Americans should have to learn to speak it too?

中国是世界上最广泛的语言。这是否意味着,美国人应该学会说英语吗?

That is about as good of an argument as to why we should learn the metric system just because it's the most widely used measuring system.

 :?:

Well with your logic then , all Chinese people should speak English :). Goes both ways

my whole point is , the metric system will not go anywhere , anytime soon.

I got your point  And I dont' think American's want the world to change, they just don't want their world changed  And sorry Voyager, but I was too dumb    It would have meant me converting things in my head, and "head" math is just not my thing

Easy solution here... we'll just get Deano's ass over there and light one of his epic farts. That thing'll disappear in NO time! :D

French is a lot easier to learn than english, man. The argument for learning another language is simple though: you'll be a smarter and more knowledgeable man/woman whatever. And the world would be a much happier place if you Americans wouldn't drag your bulldozer sized bodies into France with the mindset that everyone should make a effort to understand you. There's no other country in the history of the world that have given more to literature, enlightenment, art, physics, medicine, etc. than France. My grumpy ass grandpa escapes to Réunion (google it) every god damn summer, so that he'll minimize the risk of getting talked to by English speaking tourists. The old fucker would rather get a complete overhaul by Mandingo than to even utter a single English word.

Btw: Chinese isn't the most widely spoken language; it's mandarin.
