Istanbul, Turkey (CNN) -- A pre-dawn earthquake collapsed homes and killed more than 50 people in a mountainous region of southeastern Turkey Monday, government officials said.

About 71 others were injured when the earthquake struck at 4:32 a.m., according to officials. The U.S. Geological Survey registered the quake at magnitude 5.9, while the Turkish earthquake monitoring center listed it as a 6.0.

The quake struck in Elazig province, with the village of Okcular the worst hit, according to Ozcan Yalcin, the press secretary for the province's governor.

The quake killed 51 people, the office of the Prime Minister and Crisis Center in Elazig province said. The death toll revises an earlier report by Turkey Deputy Prime Minister Cemil Cicek that at least 57 people had died. There was no further detail on the discrepancy.

Dozens of aftershocks, ranging up to magnitude 5.5, shook the region in the hours after the quake.

Haiti, Japan, Chile, and now Turkey. Who's next?

Check out the recent significant earthquakes from http://earthquake.usgs.gov/earthquakes/eqinthenews/ :

Don't we always have earthquakes somewhere in the world though? Is it possible that media hype could be just making us more aware? Just wonder what the experts are saying. I dont' know really, that's why Im asking

I don't remember a time where there were this many major earthquakes in a row occurring all around the earth during a short period of time. It seems like something is going on with the earth to cause it.

But do you not remember because the MEDIA wasn't telling us then, or do you not remember because they weren't occurring? That is the question inquiring minds want to know  I just know the media is notorious for that kind of thing.

Funny how the number of earthquakes grew so much between 2000 and 2008, yet NO media coverage like we have right now during all this global warming stuff and the "2012" thing. Where was the media the last 10 years this was happening? And also may I add that lots of those EARLY years did not have the equipment they have in modern times to accurately measure and keep track of earthquakes the way they do today.

Lynn the mdia covered the quakes... just they were more in remote places, where there is little loss of life... the earthquakes this year so far have been in places where millions are effected... to me that is the biggest thing.

Well sure when cities are affected the loss of life will be greater. That is expected. But the numbers have been there a long time. No one really cared about hurricanes all these years I have feared them yearly. Until the years that we got hit 3 times and then NO got hit majorly causing the levy damage. I mean that could have happened anytime in history, but it just happened to be now. Usually it's poor islands or countries that no one gives a crap about though. No one paid attention to our hurricanes until the last several years, and we had some BAD ones in the past. NO got lucky it never happened earlier. It's all chance and wind patterns. Same with the earths plates. I see it as luck. I mean what, 2012 is coming so now the earth is picking cities? It just seems like the media loves to take something and make it an epidemic. They do it all the time with a lot of different things. Remember the swine flu that was going to kill us all??

What's even more freaky is that our planet is the only one we have discovered with life on it out of billions of other planets. We are hurling through space at 67,000 mph. Yet we think everything is supposed to be safe and sound.

It was definitely prophesized in the Bible, so I think time's just about run out for Planet Earth.

MATT 24: 7-8 Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains.

Basically, signs of the end. And the Mayan calendar stops in 2012, too. I just hope the new Dokken album comes out before the world implodes for good.

If I had definitive proof that the world was gonna end in 2012, I would not put as much effort into straightening up my life as I have the past couple years. I think I'd rather go back to drinking, drugging and smoking.
