The second lowest total for a number one album at the #1 since the SoundScan era began in 1991 (The soundtrack album Dream Girls undersold Bieber's effort by only a few hundred back in 2007).
The days of multi-platinum album sales seem numbered indeed.
Last year when Susan Boyle debuted, she sold 700k her first week. The three albums behind her all sold over 100,000 copies, yet only a year later, 60, 80 or 90k is all you need to go #1.
Why even have a number ranking anymore? It's totally worthless with these totals.

Nowadays I pay attention to how long someone stays on the chart. That was one of the things I loved about Revelation and for me was a definition of success. They debuted, dropped a little and then stuck around for a couple months.

I'm very curious how sales of an all new (no bonus re-records + DVD) studio album will go. Will be interesting to say the least.

After All These Years charted Billboard with zero input from past band members .

Journey outsold Foreigner and REO's last albums combined and by a two to one margin. Despite the big difference in sales, all three bands still ended up with two Top 30 A/C hits apiece (Though Foreigner might have one more release left). None of them cracked the Hot 100.

Of course, even with Perry or Gramm, they might have fared the same. Looking at their contemporaries, only U2 and Bon Jovi can still pull off that feat.

It'll go Gold ... minimum. Besides, since when is a band giving their fans a great package a bad thing? I'm a bit disappointed in Mick Jones. He has openly acknowledged aiming their last release straight at the A/C charts. I think Kelly still has the chops for the band to put out a few more old school headknocking albums. I hope they don't become REO version 2.

But is there really a market for new rock songs from older bands? It seems like even the huge older artists (AC/DC and Bon Jovi to name 2) get a bit of air play and then the songs just disappear into oblivion. Hell, I didn't even really hear The Eagles' new songs and they sold almost 8 million CDs. I think Mick Jones realizes that the current market is just shitty for rock music from older acts. Sad, but probably true. I'm interested to see the route Journey takes with their new "rocking" album. Any thoughts?

I think Journey gets at least one song on the A/C chart, regardless of how rocking the whole album is supposed to be and despite the new found destain Neal is voicing of late for the Adult Contemporary genre. The big question is, who is releasing this album? If it's not Walmart, then it will be a general retail deal with only the amounts being requested by the stores being sent out to Target, Barnes &Noble, Best Buy, etc. From what I understand, those stores have been requesting less of late, hence the smaller totals for debut album sales. I'm looking at a selling point of 13 dollars.

You forget we had Paula Abdul, Cyndi Lauper, madonna, The Bengals, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Whitney Houston, Wham, Culture Club, The Go-Go's, Lionel Richie, Huey Lewis...... and the list goes on and on and on with music that you are not including in the 80's genre that was more "popular" which is why it's "pop" music. I don't see how time has changed THAT much except that the newer rock music isn't as main stream as it seems to have been in the 80's. Some bands are, and I actually think its better now than it was 10 years ago. There are "rock" options out there for the youth and those interested in rock are finding it and listening.

Come on, Lynn. Michaels Jackson and Stevie Wonder is awesome. The music scene was way better in the 80's.

I like house and techno music when listening to it in a club or whatever, but the quality of music, the real musicianship, was better. No doubt about it.
