Just curious. How much of the name recognition/popularity of a particular artist depends on circumstances instead of music? Just thinking of a couple here.

Bret Micheals. - Who knows where this will go?
Eric Clapton - Losing his son, which was high-profile falling from the window and than writing a song about it.
SRV - OK-He died early
Eddie Van Halen - Marrying Valerie Bertanelli when her series was hot.

Just wondering if name recognition is more about visability than actual talent. Anybody know Eric Johnson?

Valerie wasn't a draw for Eddie since she was on a family show. Eddie probably hurt his image marrying her.
Bret. This keeps his name out there and people see his nice side.
Eric well-known anyway. Just that loss gave him the pain to create that song in memory of his son.

Yes, but I disagree on the name recognition. EVH and Valerie made a pretty big splash back then, I remember seeing EVH and Valerie B on SNL. I'm not talking about how the music industry feels about them, but the general public recognizing and associating a name. I"m pretty convinced it's not about talent these days.

Van Halen was pretty big before VB came on the scene, I think EVH had already won three Guitarists of the year honors. DLR's antics at the US festival also kept them on the map. To me the biggest thing that happened in Eddie's career in the 80s was Beat It and Sammy Hagar, that's when Van Halen blew up all over the world.

It's a toss up... Attention is attention whether it's positive or negative in hollywood. Celebrities marry other celebrities (Musicians, actors, actressess) because they can. And then they divorce because the next interest comes along. Convieniently, these relationships usually take place when one of those celebrities has something big in the works. It boosts both sides' appeal and spotlight. When one loses that spotlight, the other doesn't want to "carry" dead weight, and the big D happens... I've never believed there to be true love in hollywood. Just convienience... Although there have been very few exceptions

I watched an interview years ago where Eric Clapton was explaining that he had originally written that song for his dad, a while before his son died. I don't remember if it was complete, or if he finished it after his son died? Either way is it such a beautiful song. He was beyond famous way before that song came out. Wasn't he a certain little curly haired guitar player's idol?

Yes, Eric Johnson. One+hit wonder....'Cliffs of Dover'. In the same class as Vai and Satch. Haven't heard about him in close to 15 years.....

Eddie's image was not hurt by marrying Valerie, it gave her some edge!
Bret's name was already out there w/that god awful Rock of Love and the wallop in the head he took last year
but his nice side was already well known...
in fact, does he have a mean side?!?!!
