Student loan hell

I've seen some people really get themselves into a pickle living off student loans while they are in college (or med school!), and it's unbelievable how much someone can end up being hit with when they graduate. We know a girl now who graduated with $50,000K in student loan debt, and even with a marketing degree, she is currently making less than $30K/year and has a child on top of that. Check out this woman's situation:

http://finance.yahoo.com/college-educat ... ollegeprep

I don't understand it. I know lots of people don't have a choice but get loans if they want to go to school, but in cases like this, are the lenders misinforming them, or are they just in denial about what they're getting themselves into?

School in France is free, so I don't have any experience with big ass loans.

Sucks to be her though.

Yup, it is. As many as 9/10 don't make it through med school in France just cause they keep weeding people out. The first year especially is uber-competitive.

It's still free though.

Come to California on a tourist visa and wait for it to expire. Then you can apply for school here and only pay what state residents pay instead of the foreign student rates.

There are so many opportunites out there today for college bound kids/adults, it's almost hard to
believe ...but I know it's true.
The scholarships that exist are unbelievable ...I have a friend that can find
a scholarship for anything ...from an ingrown toenail to genetic heritage.
We have TOPS here (Taylor Opportunity Program), for students
who can score the floor (necesssary#) on their ACTS, the higher the score, the more
funding they receive, (there's also a ceiling). Course, this is only helpful in the event
you are attending a LA college ...so no Wolverines for me.
Michigan offers something very similar ...name escapes me, but obviously
you have to have lived and been educated in the state in which these opportunities exist.

If you are willing to do all the paperwork you can actually make money going to school here in the states. If you do your homework and really look at all your options, school is basically free. It's just that people get hung up on going to a college with a name or don't want to fill out the paperwork or run down their tax returns and other required documents to help them get a tuition free entrance or whatever. Pretty much simple laziness is the only thing keeping a lot of Americans out of school. I know other people need to work and have kids and other issues but there are millions too lazy to just fill out the forms and even put one ounce of effort into bettering themselves.

They might be stupid enough to think that they're smart enough to become a doctor. Either that or they might want to be able to write prescriptions for themselves.

As in almost any kind of education, there's people that drops out and can't manage it - it's just that medicine is one, if not, the hardest education possible. Just cause you can't manage it, doesn't mean you're stupid.

Except for dermatologists; lazy ass fucks.

What makes dermatologists lazy? Honest question, is that an easier field to learn?

Dermatology is one of the most competitive fields there is, but that's cause the pay is decent, good work hours and a easy, stress free environment. It has nothing to do with the medicine involved, as that is the easiest field to learn. The diagnosing is simple, and the treatment basically boils down to two things: Topical steroids and/or biopsy.

It depends on the person, not everyone can work the 80 hour week the surgeons do, but the dermatologists get off easy.

It basically boils down to two things: Topical steroids and/or biopsy. So the medicine involved is easy, and most dermatologists live a lazy life.

But they have to look at all those disgusting moles, oozing rashes, warts, fungating cancers. Then again, they probably don't lose alot of sleep when they're on call at night. Not alot of skin emergencies that can't wait until morning to deal with.

I completely understand how Cortney got into so much student loan debt - the common mindset is go to the best school, get a good education, and you will get a good job and pay later. The problem is, people do not do the simple step of using a debt calculator and figuring out how much their monthly payments will be and how long it will take to pay off the loan. The student loans department can give you a very accurate total of yearly tuition, plus materials and living expenses - multiply by 4, find out the lending rate, and punch in the numbers (praying that the prime rate does not take off before the loan is paid).

Unfortunately, even if they do the math, they are under the misconception that somehow they will have a career making good money. What kind of job can you get with a degree in Religion and Women's Studies that pays well? Regardless of the "pedigree" of the university she attended? It sounds like no thought or research went into determining what kind of career such a degree would apply to or the earning potential. I feel bad for her - I hope she is taking practical courses through night school that will allow her to earn a good living and pay off her loans. Otherwise those loans will plague her for the rest of her life.

Plus HERE, many dermatology offices double as "cosmetic surgery" offices for skin care and other such things. That is where their money is since insurance companies here don't pay out well for the "medical" skin treatments

This is pretty much what everyone told me for my first 3 years of college. "Oh no one uses their major anyway, they'll just be impressed that you went to UCLA."

HAH

I'm very lucky that I ended up with less than 10k in loans and that I have enough savings to keep up with my monthly payments, because my part time salary sure wouldn't keep me afloat if I didn't.

Very true -- tons of clinics are doing those. Anything performed "in office" gets a higher payout.
