Truly a sad, sad day! I had never gotten the chance to see them perform and, by all accounts, Steve was a very kind man.

I will miss him and Gotthard.

That's terrible...I always liked Gotthard...such a tragic loss not only for his family and friends, but for the MR scene as well.

RIP Steve :(

One of my co-worker friends got struck by another vehicle while on a motorcycle. She was damn lucky to have survived unscathed. I've always had dreams of owning/riding motorcycles since I was a kid, but when I hear about the tragic deaths that are attached to them I always shy away.

This will be a serious blow to melodic rock in general. RIP Steve Lee. :(

This is very sad news... :(

One of my favorite groups and singers....he will be missed.

Singer for one of those no-talented obscure euro groups...

From what I read, he and others were stopped on the side of a highway and got hit :( Reminds of how dangerous it is to stop there, but sometimes there's no choice if your vehicle or bike or whatever is disabled and you just have to. And reminds that people should slow the hell down and be cautious when there are vehicles off to the side of the road. A lot of cops have been killed that way too.

So awful for his family and friends. Such an awesome singer and still only in his 40's, so sad.

Gotthard is huge in their home country of Switzerland playing 20,000 seat venues, but never really broke out anywhere else. Maybe the most talented band on the melodic rock scene, and Steve Lee was a phenomenal singer. Style varied a bit from the AC/DC-ish sound of the first albums, then going pretty much lightweight pop-rock around Open/Homerun, then back to hard rock. European version of Bon Jovi is probably the closest reference point.

absolutely gutted... :(

The accident happened 60 some miles north of Las Vegas, not in California. Either way, 48 is way too young to leave the stage. He'll be greatly missed. Gotthard was one of my favorite bands

Gotthard is one of my favorite bands as well. This tragedy really hit home this morning. Ironic that my husband just bought a Harley last night, without my knowledge! Needless to say I am LIVID because he didn't discuss it with me before he bought it, we can't afford it and they are too damn dangerous!!! This tragedy just proves my point! :|

Somebody should start a revolving obituary thread because these obscure deaths are getting old. Let's keep them all in one place. I wouldn't mind checking in each day to see who expired, but we don't need a thread every time some Tom, Dick or Perry goes on a dirt diet.

repeat: selling out 20,000 seat venues. Just because YOU haven't heard of them doesn't mean nobody else has.

look at all the people. This is a headlining concert recorded for a dvd a few years ago... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PfX0cl_3yLg

Don't waste your breath, Pubs....it is a losing battle to talk sense to close-minded people. Our music is less than to them. Whether it be Steve Lee, Ronnie Atkins, Michael Shotton, or Alfonzetti...it's all Greek to them....pitiful.

no, just the only part worth responding to at the moment....
Anyone else notice that virtually EVERY Gotthard video on youtube has the news--and there are a bunch of 'em. For an "obscure band", they sure have a lot of fans.

I noticed that going through the videos I posted.....in the melodic rock community they weren't even close to being obscure.

no, not even close to being obscure. Their discography is as consistent as any band in the last 20 years, even with all the style changes. Be interesting to see what happens at this point. I don't know if you can replace someone like that, but you also talking mega money with the popularity of the band in their home country.

that is my guess also. I wonder if they did any recording of the Need to Believe tour. Would be a fitting tribute to the guy.

Wonder what the board would look like if Pineda passed away... Way more wailing/threads/tributes? With nowhere near the popularity or history either.

Friends in Switzerland had this to say about the Swiss media reaction:

The news coverage over here has been insane. Specials on TV, the tabloids have full front page coverage etc. If you check the Swiss iTunes charts, five or six Gotthard albums are in the top 10, same goes for the singles. Frankly, I didn't realize how popular the guy was. I mean we're almost talking Jacko proportions here...

Every album since Dial Hard went to number one and sold platinum (11 albums I think?), who esle has does that in Switzerland? you will nearly find any international rockband which was that succesful in the last 15 years.

In the 200 i-tunes charts there are 41(!!!!) Gotthard songs with Heaven on the number one spot and One Life One Soul on no. 3 !!! At the moment it's that crazy, never saw this with any swiss musician ever.

Some may not care about this loss, but far many more do. Just have a little compassion and respect. That should be the easiest reaction to this terrible news. No need to be rude or abrasive.
