In his memoir 'Life,' Keith Richards calls Prince "an overrated midget."
The biggest surprise in Keith Richards' memoir is that he remembers enough about his life to have written it. The Rolling Stones guitarist practically invented rock star debauchery — yet remains alive and coherent after decades of drug and alcohol abuse. "Life," co-written with author James Fox, has been praised by critics. The New York Times' Michiko Kakutani calls its prose "intense, elemental, utterly distinctive and achingly, emotionally direct," while Richard Corliss at Time praises its "engaging prose style and spellbinding story-telling." (Watch Keith Richards discuss his career.) Here are five notable revelations from Richards' book:

Keith hates lots of people... The legendary guitarist doesn't hold back, especially when it comes to his fellow musicians. Prince? "An overrated midget." Elton John is "an old bitch," John Lennon a "silly sod," and of Bruce Springsteen he writes, "if there was anything better around, he'd still be working the bars of New Jersey."

... but especially Mick Jagger Richards reserves most of his scorn for his bandmate and sparring partner Mick Jagger, whom he nicknames "Your Majesty." Jagger has been "unbearable" since the 1980s, he writes. Of Jagger's 1985 solo album, "She's The Boss," he says: "It's like Mein Kampf. Everybody had a copy, but nobody listened to it." In the most personal barb, he reveals that Jagger has a "tiny todger." He goes on: "I know he's got an enormous pair of balls, but it doesn't quite fill the gap, does it?"

His secret to a long life?
Use good drugs
Many commentators express surprise that Richards has reached the age of 66, given his liberal abuse of almost every kind of illegal narcotic ever created. Richards addresses this, putting his longevity down to his use of the "finest, finest cocaine and the purest, purest heroin" — a combination he famously nicknamed "The breakfast of champions." He actually gave up heroin in 1979, but carried on using cocaine until 2006. "I've done so much bloody blow in my life, I don't miss it an inch," he says. "I think it gave me up."

Girl-swapping with bandmates Richards began his relationship with Anita Pallenberg while she was going out with his fellow band member Brian Jones. The pair went on to have three children, even though Jagger slept with her in the early stages of their relationship. Richards got revenge though: He slept with Jagger's girlfriend Marianne Faithfull. In yet another personal swipe at Jagger, he writes: "I was knocking Marianne, man. While you're missing it, I'm kissing it."

Yes, he did snort his dead father's ashes
The rumor — long denied by Richards — that he snorted the ashes of his dead father Bert with a line of cocaine is partly true, reveals the book. "As I took the lid off the box, a fine spray of his ashes blew out onto the table," he writes. "I couldn't just brush him off, so I wiped my finger over it and snorted the residue. Ashes to ashes, father to son."

I guess when you reach your sixties, you just say what you feel....I knew about the references to heroin and proper high grade usage....but cocaine? I don't think so...that shits lethal , and he's really just a lucky sob

Richards would have the balls to say this about fellow musicians. Why not though, he's seen it all, done it all, but mostly, he lived it all!

I hadn't heard that the Rolling Stones had declared they were officially retired, but after the comments Keith Richards made about Mick Jagger in his book, I'm guessing that is the case. It's one thing to compare Jagger's solo effort to 'Mein Kampf', but another to comment on the size of his "todger" and find it lacking. Holy crap.

Wasn't there a story some years ago that Neal was hired by Mick Jagger to tour with the Stones and he found out the deal was off when the band took off and left him at an airport without so much as a goodbye?

i've been listening to the audiobook, which is read by johnny depp. seems like the negative stuff gets all the publicity, as keef gives praise to many musicians as well, including mick. I get a little lost when he starts going into detail on guitar chords & musical techniques, but it shows how passionate he is about the music. he really gets into detail about how things made him feel. it's not just a chronological time-line of his life. so far, it's one of the best biographies I've read (listened to) in a long time.

I definitely want to read it - I recently read "Don Felder's" bio and I'm not much of a reader, but definitely enjoyed it. Keith I'm sure has lived an extraordinary life and well worth the read...interesting Depp reads the book - that's a good match.

Some what but not too much...I mean is it hard to imagine both Henley and Frey were such money sucking control freaks? I knew that going in, but appreciated Felder's take on what happened, how he dealt with everything, and the personal exp. Seems like a genuinely nice guy, but then again, it's his book.

I did learn the true reason a rehearsal studio I used to hang out back in the day, earned it's name (3rd Encore)...which was classic.

I just lost a lot of respect for Richards. What's it say when an artist has to put down other artists, who arguably are all much more talented than you are? He just put down three of the best songwriters/artists'singers in histoy the history of music. I believe Richards hold a bunch of jealousy against the Beatles, because they were always bigger than the Stones. Also, I am surprised that he took a run at Springsteen, especially after Bruce last year said in a UK interview, he had "never saw a better live show than the Stones."

The Springsteen jab is an interesting one...personally, I think both the Stones and Springsteen sway much too close to mass appeal for the bulk of their career...regionally disparate for sure, but arguably having more in common than they would probably like to admit. Beatles fans can have all the opinions they like, but the fact is, these lucky SOBs outlived them
