Vocal qualities......

KGD's thread got me thinking about vocal qualities. S2M, I've checked out some of your links you post, and for the most part I like the music and the songs, but probably 8 times out of 10, I'm not feeling the vocal(s). Which is the first thing that grabs me on a song. Of course ya know I love me some Perry, Martin, Soto vocals, but what are some other people's favorite vocal styles, tones, etc. that aren't your typical Perry's, Rodgers, Mercury's, etc.

If anybody knows of any vocals that sound similiar to this guy in tone and delivery, lets hear it. Goofy bugger, but I just adore his vocal tone and delivery. LOL, Yep I definitely have a vocal type. R&B influenced delivery, gritty tone, lots of character/texture, and well delivered soulful inflections. Just can't get into weak/thin vocals......gotta be a more full bodied vocal timbre.

one possibility that isn't too far off is Australian singer/guitarist Mark Lizotte, better known as Johnny Diesel or simply "Diesel". Some combination of rock, R&B, pop and a little bit of blues. Good singer and one heck of a talented guitarist.

He's a bit patchy, but has some really good songs.

Don't Need Love (old stuff and rock side from the wonderful "Johnny Diesels and the Injectors" album) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bts-OKj4OiY
One More Time (slightly newer) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wg_xSuw081A
15 Feet of Snow (newer still) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v0_v8Z_azYg
Crazytown (fairly new) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ5uxQgNLUg

I've always liked him. :) I saw him a couple times live back in the day, and his Lonesome Jubilee tour show I saw is still up there in probably my top 5 favorite concerts of all time. I've never seen anything like it, during songs like Cherry Bomb and Paper and Fire........he had the whole friggin' arena up dancin'. Too cool!

That Don't Need Love is very similar to that Hands On The Radio I posted. He hasn't quite got the delivery/inflections of Summer, but still I quite like it.

So you can't jump on stage and sing with a band?

Me? No...I could when I was a child, but damaged my voice in 1985's Texas Jam where I was out side in 100 degree heat for 12 hours screaming my ass off to Deep Purple, Scorpions, Bon Jovi, Grim Reaper, Victory, Night Ranger, andTed Nugent....My first Rock show..

Now, I get mad when I hear myself sing...I tend to lip sync these days.

Good gawd NO, couldn't hold a tune to save my life. But I appreciate the f*&@ out of people that can. A great set of pipes are by far my favorite instrument, ain't nothing finer to these ears than a great bluesy, r&b influenced rock vocal. :D Mind you, I was singing aloud to every damn lyric to every damn song at the April 2 MB show. Blessedly, no one could hear me over EM's pipes.

Like his. And going to check and see if there is a clip of something a little less mellow and more rock to tell w/ Michael Ruff's vocals.

Thanks all for posting some samples.......
