I greatly respect R.E.M. and consider myself a fan (though I haven't paid much attention since Monster)...they will be missed.

First off, I didn't know they were still around. Secondly, I'm not going to lose any sleep.

Never been a fan of their music, but classy move. Wouldn't it be cool if every band member wrote up a paragraph or two on their thoughts when the band breaks up. I can think of a few bands that would have been a good read.

Agree with many of the comments. Never was a fan, never will be.

Not really a big fan but their last album went Top 20 in 18 countries this past spring. If you are going to call it quits, going out on top isn't a bad way to do it.

Why don't you "Stand in the place that you were", and we'll call you when we want your opinion!

I'm a big fan of their music, though not such much this past decade. But their latest, Collapse Into Now, I have enjoyed.

Well what a surprise.

you also listen to U2 , so this isn't shocking.

when you listen to music , do you place the headphones on your butt cheeks ?

Now, now, play nice. P.S. They don't come close to U2, but a lot of their earlier albums were great.

Not one good song since "Wendell Gee". But I respect them nonetheless. Now, piss off.

I started off hating them for years, but when they took a turn to hard guitar driven rock on the "Monster" CD I started to appreciate them a bit (although not Stipe's social commentary). They haven't made a decent CD since then though.

Same here. Not a big fan of theirs at all but Monster was one they did do that had some hard driving guitar work.Overall i think i had Monster and the one before it Automatic For The People but other than those two wasn't much of a fan.

Now if we could only get Radiohead to retire, that would be something. I have no idea what that crap was on SNL last night. I thought I was watching the lovechild of Seth Green and Ashton Kutcher on an American Idol audition....TWO drummers?! REALLY?

I don't really expect fans on a melodic rock board to appreciate REM's music since it's not AOR stuff, and believe me, I'm not a huge fan myself. With that said, they did make some good music - I have a few favorites from their catalog. I think it's a classy move by REM.

That was truly AWFUL, whatever it was. It made me shut the TV off.
