If you go to a store like Best Buy to buy a TV, are the sales people allowed to haggle over price?

If I tell them that I'm in no hurry to buy a TV, and that I'm willing to wait for several more months, and maybe go to a different store, do you think that I could get them to drop say $50 off the price of a $750 TV if I buy it right now?

Sure why not? Make sure you can offer cold hard cash. It will make the haggling much easier.If they say no, ask for the manager. If they want to sell you something badly enough they'll find a way.

No harm in trying. As SG said, ask for the manager, because the sales people probably don't have the authority to change the price.

Dude, this ain't the third world. If you want to haggle you're gonna have to go Crazy Gideon's and barter over last year's models. If you can't afford to pay in full at the moment, then go to WalMart of Kmart and put one on layaway.

My kid works at BestBuy and business is booming. If you don't want to buy something because of the price, there's gonna be someone right behind you who will.

It's not like your spending $3,000 on a 3D 70 inch LED. Just buy something that you have the money in hand for, don't try to jew the associates over a 500 dollar television.

I agree...You would be amazed at how calculated everything is for how much they expect to earn on their inventory and how those prices are set, when they go on sale...and how all of those sales are projected and inventory replenished, and gross and net sales are projected - and expected. A manager probably does not have the authority to sell a new TV for less. You can try it, but I'm certain he'll not even take your offer.

Now, if you make an offer on a floor model that a manager wants to get rid of, he'll talk and deal with you...because nobody wants it in the store any longer...and since it is an open and 'used' item, they can't sell it at full price anyway.

Exactly. Open box, refurb, closeouts on last year's models are where they'll possibly cut you a deal but prices are so low now, there really is no reason not get a brand new T.V. fresh from the factory unless you just want something for the man cave or garage.

All right, I admit I was setting you up. Well spotted.

After I posted the question on here, I decided to do a Google search to see if there's anything on the internet about those places negotiating a different price.

There are some mentions on the internet about people having haggled with sales people at places like Best Buy, and having gotten a cheaper price. So, I guess it is possible. I might as well give it a shot.

I got $400.00 off of the advertised "sale price" on the 65 inch plasma that I purchased at Best Buy over the summer. That said, it was a TV that was over $4000.00. They obviously have a FAR greater margin on that amount of money versus $700.00.

I would research it over several websites, see if you can find some place else that is offering the exact same model etc at a lower price.

You can haggle at Best Buy. Last time I bought a TV from there, it was a TV that was on sale for $1699 from $2299. I told the guy I will buy it if he throws in a bluray player of my choice and he agreed. When I picked up a 120Gb PS3 ( $499 back then), He started to back out of the deal at first, but then talked to the manager and I got the PS3 for free
The ONLY ITEMS that they will not haggle a PENNY on is Apple products cause they can not change the price , even a penny.
But any appliances Ive bought from Best Buy, I have always asked for a better deal , either by them throwing in some free stuff, or simply knock of a precentage. And NONE of them were closeout items.

scarygirl, the days of "cold hard cash" being better are long gone. Most retailersr really prefer that you use it on their charge cards. Thats what I always do when I buy from BestBuy cause they also give you a 12-36 months 0%, which is extra bonus on top of what you saved from negotiating earlier

Bill: which Best Buy are you going to? I've had success along B's lines at the North Olmsted location. But I also haven't tried it on an item under a grand, so perhaps those talking about cheaper/lower margin products might be right. But it's worth a try. You ain't buying a couch from your friend. This is arm's length. In the end, who cares if they think you're trying to "jew" them?
