Cyclorama

Postby ChicagoSTYX » Tue Feb 07, 2006 6:34 am

I just listened to Cyclorama for the first time in about 8 months. I had forgotten how good this CD is! It keeps getting better with age. I still rank it right along side Grand Illusion and Pieces Of Eight. :D

Excellent disc. I was wondering if I was the only one who thinks this is one of the best Styx albums.

I agree completely. This is one of their best albums. To be honest, my expectations were pretty low when it came out. BNW, EotC and Kilroy were huge disappointments for me. The only bright spot was Return to Paradise, and you can't really count a live greatest hits cd.

I heard the song samples on thier website and was not impressed. But when the entire album was made available pre-release on some website, I downloaded it onto minidisc and listened with headphones. I was blown away.

I saw STYX 4 times in 2003 just to hear live songs from Cyclorama.

I have the dvd-a version as well. Hearing all the harmonies and guitar armies in full surround is an experience you don't want to miss.

For me the only weak spots on the album are Bourgeois Pig - which just seems like an ill thought out slam on Denny and the comedy bit at the end which was funny once. But got old real fast. Fortunately, that portion was left off of the dvd-a.

I enjoyed BBT. But it didn't spend nearly as much time in my cd player as Cyclorama. It was actually a smart thing to do because I thought Cyclorama would be a difficult act to follow.

I am impatiently awaiting the next release of all new material. And I hope it is nearly as good as Cyclorama. Although I believe Glen Burtnik's contribution will be missed.

When it first came out I didn't like it much. I was too used to the old Styx Sound.

Then after a while I got used to it and really like it. I found both the old sound and a mix of modern musc too. Most of my friends who HATE Styx really liked this album.

I just listened to the Carrot cd a few months ago for Yogi and gave him my review - LOL

I did like a few of Tommy's songs. :)

That's all :)

I´m pleasantly surprised that there is few other people who like Cyclorama besides me. I thought that almost all in this Styx-board are in the school of Froy

Suite, do you like “These Are The Times”? I think it sounds like it’s from Pieces Of Eight. It is the most classic Styx sounding song since the Paradise Theater album as is “One With Everything”. The guitar break in the middle of “Killing The Thing That You Love” is also classic. :D

To be very honest, I do not like "These Are the Times" at all. To me, it doesn't really sound like it would be from "Pieces of Eight", IMO.

I heard them sing this live and still didn't care for it. The last time I snuck and saw them in concert I did know the words to this song, well the chorus.-LOL

I like Tommy singing, no offense to the other vocalists, but ACK. Just Tommy. I miss the harmonies of Classic Styx. I know, I know, I still live in the past.

Are you going to see Styx at Summerfest this year???

I liked it decently, it was a fairly strong album, but it just wasn't that interesting to me. I have to admit, I missed the flavor that Dennis added to the albums. The Styx that did Cyclorama seemed like they were really consumed with the idea of putting out material that would be considered acceptable and cool, which made for an album that seemed a little restrained. Dennis didn't care so much what other people thought, and could be a little dorky at times. I think it was this way of thinking that really made Styx what they were in their heyday.

I do agree that "These Are The Times" is a good song, very well written, might just be J.Y's finest.

I didn't care for the album. Too many singers and not enough good songs. Glen's songs are horrible, Tommy has done much better on past albums. JY's songs are very good though. "These Are The Times" is the best song off that album; it's a great track. "Fields of the Brave" is pretty good too.

I'm a big carrot fan too, one of those albums I just pop in and play all the way through. I immediately thought These Are The Times had a very vintage Styx feel to it.

CYCLORAMA

Postby STYGIANMAN » Fri Feb 17, 2006 11:04 am

I actually liked this album. I missed Dennis, and skip over Gowen's songs, but the rest of the album is very good. I talked to JY on the phone when he was here at 107.7 the Bone in San Fran about "These are the times". He said the song was written mostly about his brother that passed away, but the whole band helped him write it.
He also said Dennis wouldn't let him include "Captain America" on a previous Styx album. He didn't mention Dennis by name, but he said
"a former member of the band who isn't in this room right now rejected that song"!!
