STYX 2, your thoughts

Postby Abitaman » Mon Feb 13, 2006 7:04 am

Been listening to this cd, the past week. To me this is the first cd that actually had a Styx sound to it. Even without Lady on it, you would still be able to tell that this is Styx.
Dennis's writing and singing are very good this time out. Pretty strong cd, song wise. Earl of Roseland is the only song I don't like the vocals on. Seems hollow for some reason. John C. A Day is a great progressive rocker, while Father OSA show a young Dennis stepping out on the promise of great rockers to come in the line of SMB, CW, and others. The song just has the right amount of Dennisism.
JY vocally does good, he rips thru I'M Gonna Make You Feel It. Easily my second favorite song, behind Lady.
Even back here, he showed hints to his like to classical music with Little Fugue in G-ERIC

Abitaman~Lady is definitely one of my faves!
I don't care how sappy people my think it is everytime
I hear it I can honestly feel the emotion in this one.
This a CD that needs to be in my collection.

Styx 2 is a good cd, but very short. Lady rocks, and yes I feel that Dennis sang this from his heart.-ERIC

Dennis always sings from his heart when he is singing about Suzanne or to Suzanne. That is why his songs connect so well. It is as if the person saying them is saying them directly to the person on the receiving end and they come from the heart.

Styx II is IMO by far the best of the wooden nickel era albums......I personally rank it up there close to their best work, and certainly their best album without Tommy or Dennis ( Both )

A Day is JC's masterpiece............

I'll never forget hearing Lady for the 1st time on WLS out of Chicago, it was an immediate classic.

You'd better ask is one funny song

Little Fugue in G is a cool intro to Father OSA which is a song pointing to the future as far as having that large ( bombastic ? ) sound.

Earl of Roseland and I'm gonna make you feel it bring the album to a creschendo and are simplistic yet powerful.

all in all not a bad cut on this album.

I enjoy this one more than the first one, but I still think they had some developing to do.

"Lady" is a total classic.. It's not the best song ever written, but it's a catchy, uplifting love song.

"You Need Love" shows potential.. It's not really my kind of song, but there is some great harmony on the chorus.

"You Better Ask" gets by because it's catchy and witty.

"A Day" a nice experimental track. This doesn't sound like Styx, but hence the "experimental".

"I'm Gonna Make You Feel It" had potential, but like "Best Thing", I just find some of the lyrics to be a little on the weaker side. "I get this strange electric feeling, that I simply can't control".. I also think this song really shows it's age now, as far as the production..

"Earl Of Roseland" is kind of fun, but while it's nice to hear some references to the band's past, it's a little too personal to really get into. Like "I'm Gonna Make You Feel It", I think the production really makes this one sound ancient.

I raelly like this Album. It was the first Styx I heard and I loved it.

Lady is a really good song but I feel that Father OSA was the kicker. Loke mentioned earlier it really put Styx up there with the HUGE songs that take on a very full sound. I expecially like the DDY vocals on this song. There arent very many lyrics but I love the way Dennis sings them.

I really enjoy it all around..it put Styx as one of the greatest bands of all time and let them put a foot in the industry.
All alone and Trapped in Time.

This is by far the most cohesive of the 4 Styx WN albums. It has the best lineup of songs of the four. (There are nice cuts on the following two albums, but they were, overall, quite uneven).

"Lady" is just a show-stopper of a number. It was a song that, at the time, was totally unique. No other song sounded like it. No other group sounded like this to me. It truly did establish the "Styx" sound in my estimation. And it is NOT a simplistic song by any means.

Styx II is by far the most joyous of the 4 WN recordings too. Good rock out numbers in "You Need Love" and "I'm Gonna Make You Feel It."

I always felt "Father OSA" was one of Dennis' most lyrically sophisticated songs and still feel this way.

John C's two contributions are quite different from each other, but I like both very much. "A Day" is a real head trip of a song which fit into that era very well. And "You Better Ask" is one of my favorite Styx songs.

I like the idea of "Earl of Roseland" and the look back at Dennis' youth, but I don't feel it was carried off as well as the rest of the songs on this recording.

Styx 2 is the WN era album I like the least. It does contain one of the top 3 songs of this era in 'A Day'.It does not sound like a Styx song as we know Styx, but it is absolutely brilliant.Sheer bliss.Lady is an OK song but prefer 'You need love'.Father OSA is alright.
Dennis certainly exploded in getting some writing done compared to 1.
But his songs would get much better on the next 2 albums IMO.

I like this CD VERY much. Side 1( ALBUM) I use play from beginning to end without picking up the needle.

I thought this was a VERY solid album for J.C.

The two songs I did not and still do not like are: I'm Gonna Make You Feel It, and Earl Of Roseland. Father OSA is OK at best in my book.

A good Styx effort!

This album I think gave them some confidence. Lady certainly was the breakout (albeit 2 years later). And A Day was one of JC's finest.

I think they were truly coming into their own here and I find myself enjoying this one for it's exploration of who they were back then.

A Day is a classic! Also love that rattle the walls pipe organ on Little Fugue in G and Father O.S.A.

Got into it for awhile back in the late 80s when I first got into Styx. Really haven't listened to it much since then.

Wow, what can I say that hasn't already been said? "A Day" is a musical showcase for all of the musicians, particularly Chuck and John P. "Earl Of Roseland" has some excellent drumming from Johnny. ALways liked "YOu Better Ask". Keyboard solo in the middle reminds me of Sanford & Son for some reason. Love the "circus" music at the end but to this day never understood what it was for. Is that Dennis at the end laughing? "I'm Gonna Make You Feel It" gets knocked around and made fun of quite a bit but I enjoy this one as well. Not a bad song and a big improvement over the first one. It is obvious Dennis put his soul into this one 100 %.

Okay, now I have this cd in :)

"You Need Love" is one of my favorite Styx songs. It's the very first Styx song that I ever heard. JY sings lead? Really? Just kidding, I still love this song and I'd give ANYTHING to hear it live in concert by either Dennis or even JY, OMG or even Tommy singing this live in concert. The best version is a boot from 1975!!

"Lady", what can I say, one of the best songs in the world that I ever heard. One of my favorite songs. Love everything about it and cry almost every time I hear it - LOL

"A Day", yikes I feel like this is one of those never ending songs and if I were to get high this would be THE song. OMG, like no one was doing drugs with this song playing. Good song overall, musically and yes for that time period.

"You Better Ask", good harmonies, fun song. Yes, very catchy!!

"Little Fugeue in "G" , again it reminds me that I need to go back to church- LOL

"Father O.S.A." another song that reminds me that I need to go back to church. Over the years when hearing this song I always thought it was okay. I enjoy Dennis' voice on this one. But after hearing Dennis talk about it really made me appreciate this song more.

"Earl of Roseland" I enjoy the lyrics too, this song sounds like totally 70's Styx to me.

"I'm Going To Make You Feel It", I'm kind of surprised that this song didn't make the charts during that time period. Like this song.

This was the second STYX album I bought, right after Equinox. I picked it up on 8 track because it had Lady on it. But I was pretty disappointed in the album in general. It was too mellow overall and sounded nothing like Equinox. Father OSA and Little Fugue in G were the only songs that really stood out for me.
