Right. Gillan was fired in 1989 and the group rehearsed a few singers...including JIMI JAMISON.....but Jamison was scared off by the Scotti Brothers who were still overseeing his career.
They ended up bringing in Joe Lynn Turner who appeared on Slaves & Masters in 1990. Some good stuff on that one, King of Dreams, Fire In the Basement, etc. Saw DP with Joe in 1991(with Winger opening) Great show!
Things didn't work out with Joe when they went to record a follow up in 1992 and they ended up bringing Gillan back.
An increasingly unhappy Blackmore walked out of the band after a show in Helsinki, Finland on 11/17/93.
Left with a Japan Tour still booked, the others brought in Joe Satriani who stayed till the Summer of 1994.
After that they brought in gutarist extraordinaire Steve Morse(ex-Kansas & Dixie Dregs.

This is great news. I got to see Styx last year in Germany, and I figured it would be another 4-5 years before they did a return trek to Europe. Not too keen on seeing DP without Lord on keys, but, hey, I'll take 'em.

Only crap thing is that I hate the Clyde Auditorium here in Glasgow...just saw George Thorogood there last week, and there's no drinks allowed inside the concert hall, and you can only stand if the people behind you don't have a problem with it (as we found out, at least one person did have a problem with us having fun).

Still, Styx is touring the UK next year!!!! I'm damn giddy.

Red, Don Airey is now slouch on the keyboards.. He's a very talented musician who's played with literally everybody!

Is it true that John Lord suggested Don to the rest of the band when he retired? I know he's still on good terms with the band which can't be said for other former members (cough Richie Blackmore cough).

After reading the last bit of news on Blabbermouth about Richie Blackmore and his mother in law/manager, I'm quite glad that disfunctionality is no where near DP!

Several people have mentioned that Airey is quite a good player, Jodes, and I won't disagree...I suppose Jon Lord just made such a huge impression on me the last time, I'll really miss him not being there. We shall have to wait and see, and go into things with an open mind.

I hear Lord did suggest Airey to sub for him in 2001 and to take over permanently after he left for good the following year.
I know what you mean, Lord is Lord of the Organ, one of a kind! But Don Airey is probably the next best thing to him. Love Don's current solo where he throws in a bit of Mr. Crowley! Don was great when I saw them two years ago!

I'm aware of your dislike for Gowan, but I've seen him several times with the band, and think he works well with the band. Different strokes for different folks, as they say.
Bottom line for me is, I've always left a Styx (or reshaped Styx, if you prefer) concert feeling good and satisfied with a fun, rockin', well-done show. I'm looking forward to them returning to the UK/Europe.
