Glen vs. Dennis

I can't deny that he has written some great songs and he has a great voice

Finally! You have cleared up the confusion on my part . I just could not imagine anyone listening to the music made by someone he or she really hated.

As to Dennis onstage, that truly is based on the perspective of the fans in the audience (or watching it on video/DVD). I always thought that intro to Grand Illusion was hilarious. Dennis in full throttle sarcastic mode. But that is just me. The fact that he opens his solo shows with the song is another testament to his humor. "Hey folks," he seems to me to be saying. "Here he is ---the Grand Illusion himself. " Again, that is my interpretation.

I have never thought Dennis DeYoung took himself seriously enough to be considered egotistical.

MHO only. 8)

You guys are right, Dennis should be less "dorky". Let me see if I can offer him some advice: develop a drug habit, cheat on his wife, smash up a few cars, tear up his hotel room while on tour, use the work Fuck on stage as often as possible, speak publicly about political issues that he has no idea what he is talking about, diss gays women and minorities in his songs, throw temper tantrums at airports when decended upon by the media....etc
By the way I like the idea of bringing Glen and Dennis both back and getting rid of Dr Righteous...

Quite true, Lord! If nothing else, if he had done all you said, he would certainly have been beloved by the rock press and the critics. Probably would have gotten him on the cover of the Rolling Stone.

Just for the record(pardon the pun), Glen was on Edge of the Century but not on Brave New World...

Actually he was on Brave New World. Just not credited. Check out the discography on his website.

Did you check out his Biography???? It says that he was working on solo material when he recieved a cryptic phone call from JY to tour with the new line up....Which is why Brave New World was in his Discography because he toured with the band to support that Album.....Lawrence and Glen are in the Special thanks section.....

Also I've heard the opening to the Grand Illusion... Now you tell me one word that Dennis is saying is not true...Be careful of dream fantasys that are generated by the radio, TV, magazines, or Certain rock videos about false hopes of being a big time star or get rich quick schemes...It sounds pretty truthful to me....

And as far as JY having the good sense not to talk much on stage.....

"I'm Here To Testify......I'M Here To Testify.....That JY......Has Spoken......Enough..... For The Opening....... Of Snowblind.....

Here is a quote from Glen on his website:

Another little known detail, kind of a secret I guess, is that I played bass on one song and sang background (or izzit backround?) vocals on another on the “Brave New World” disc. To protect the innocent, I suppose I should resist the urge to spit out which songs, but I will tell you the one I played bass on is one of the wackier tracks, and of the one I sang backup on, Tommy Shaw has said he thinks my voice sticks out audibly in the “gang” vocal chorus. Both tracks are Tommy’s tunes, by the way.

Bugsy please don't mention Rolling StonED magazine and rock music in the same passage the two just don't mix...maybe at one time, like when John Lennon first appeared on the cover in 67....when you put rap stars, politicians, Britany Spears, etc on the cover...you lost this subscriber..

Oh Lord, Lord, how I know this! I was really speaking to a more symbolic meaning that Rolling Stone used to have, which was you really had "made" it as a rock star if you got on the cover. That, of course, went out the window a long while back when Rolling Stone became what it is today -- Teen People crossed with a tiny bit of Vibe.

Here's an interesting question though....is there enough bad blood between Dennis and Glen to prevent them from doing a double bill
at some future date ?

They both want to stay close to family, and not be on the road all the time.....if they dont hate each other, it could work, at least for a couple of dates.....

I'd go just to hear "All in a day's work" as one of the encores !

I was looking something else up and came across this from 2 years ago - LOL

What are the odds of this ever happening??

Glen was on "Just Fell In" on bass and vocals, and on "Number One" in the background vocals, is my understanding. And of course though not credited, some of Dennis' tracks had guys from his solo band on them as well.

Get rid of Larry, replace him with Dennis (I like you Larry, your a good player, but not DDY)
Keep Tommy
Get rid of Jy, replace with Glen
Keep Todd

Ricky could stay or replace him with Jack Blades (like that one better)

Would have to tour 4 months a year at least.
2 ballads tops from DDY.-ERIC

Classic: Like him or dont like him, he IS charasmatic, at least many people seem to think so.

That is how many, me among them, view him. A riveting presence onstage. Some see that is egotistical, others as star power.

As I said before, in the view of those who really dislike DDY and consider him a dork (among other things), there must only be one Styx album/CD that those people listen to --- Cyclorama. Everything else is just loaded with input from the, let's see, now he is the "egotistical dork."

Hi people!

I'm confused...What does being a dork have to do with musical ability? It is possible to have a lot of both! JY has a lot of influence in old Styx sound as well, but I don't see that changing anyone's already well-formed opinions of him around here!

As far as the ear holder goes, I love Dennis' voice...to be far away from me. j/k - OK, not really, but I like him for the grandiose, powerful ballad stuff, NOT rock n' roll. Not since his voice started sounding like Operaman.

My choice is pretty obvious, is it not? There is no conceivable occasion where I would choose Dennis over Glen. Unless the choice was: which performer would you be ok with never seeing live again

Side note: I see lots of posts from people that were mysteriously absent before I took my little break...hmmm. LOL

(Don't worry, I'm still on it. I was reeaalllly bored at work today and thought I'd catch up)

Hi Froy. Miss me yet, Sugarbottoms? *g*

I can say that I don't like Jy like the next person because of what he says in interviews and his attitude, but for Styx fans to be happy that there is a "reunion" Jy will have to stay. Replace Ricky with Glen and keep Chuck on select shows that he decides. Replace Larry with Dennis, and Keep Tommy and Todd as well. This way you will have both incarnations of STYX. The 1990 version and the classic version with the exception of John and John.

Or you could keep everyone and do a "Very Big Band" veriosn like Styx and Reo did. :D

I would rather see Glen. He is a great entertainer. Dennis is a dork.

I'm with you Kansas666. Dennis IS a dork. He's just got this Old Man/Paul Reiser vibe. I liked Dennis until Kilroy and then I haven't really cared for him. Having seen Styx a few times with Gowan, I've got NO problem with him. AND Glenn NEEDS to be in Styx. He brought hipness to them as well as great 4 part harmonies. I cannot believe that Shaw and Young f'ed that relationship up. What a colossal stupid move on their part.

Cyclorama is THE best album since Pieces of Eight and they just were willing to piss that away. Such a shame.

As for playing ability, Gowan is by far the superior keyboard player. Dennis WAS becoming too operatic. Also, if I were to hear "We had dreams!" one more time, I think I'd puke. I always hated that line being tossed in night after night. Larry makes Styx a ROCK band. Dennis makes them seem to be loungy.

They could lose JY, or just keep him from singing lead.

He stated he left the band Styx to be with his family more and work on solo work. I'll find the article.

I know I read a few comments from Glen's letters of why he left. Here's one:

The thing is, I realized I was the only one in the band who didn't feel comfortable about constantly being away from home. After four and a half years, you get to know the players, the priorities and the outcome of the efforts. Between that and my own personal dramas, it was obviously time to walk.
Thanks for the kind words,
Glen

He also left because he felt like a sideline player. "Certain people could bring their families on tour while others could not".

What did TOMMY say bad about Glen??

I don't remember Tommy saying anything bad about Glen, well not in print at least.

Glen belongs with Dennis, they're great on the stage and Glen will be doing more songs
