MSFunk on MySpace

Postby colinkeefe » Sun Oct 01, 2006 5:15 am

Lots of information and pics of MSFunk on MySpace, including every gig ever played (dates and location) and four downloadable songs, two of which will sound familiar to you Styx fans.

Tommy, of course, was with MSFunk. Other members later joined such groups as Toto; Ides of March; Trillion: LeRoux: and Miami Sound Machine.

What ever happened to that 3CD set that a lot of us signed up to get and never heard about? I'm still interested ...

Well, I heard "Put Me On" and "Madamoiselle" but no "Come Sail Away" LOL!

Thanks for that link. It was most interesting visiting that MySpace site.

That 3-CD set started out as a Christmas present to band members and roadies. There was some interest to create more sets for other people but we knew we'd need to clean it up both musically and production-wise for a public release. The final product would have been very expensive to produce. We thought if we could sell 500 copies we wouldn't lose money on a cost-per-unit investment. The music was re-edited and ready to go but the person in charge of production (a non- MSFunk member) changed his mind and wanted to be paid up front instead of recouping the cost from sales of the CD. The project stalled at that point.

Sorry to hear it. I for one would still like to get my hands on it. I think there are enough online distribution sites (like CD Baby), or if you put the tracks up as lossless (i.e. FLAC/APE) where people could download it themselves and burn it, you could still get it out there and make some money. I've put out a few CDs myself and it's not that expensive, but you're right - as a 3CD set it would have been moreso.

Online distribution in some form is the way to go IMHO as long as you don't only offer a lossy (i.e. MP3) version. If you put it up on a site, sold the set for X dollars, put the artwork and music up there for download, there's little to no overhead to you. Pressing a physical CD would cost money.

Some "Ballerina" in there, too. Very cool.

Pretty educational site for an MSF newbie like me. I was especially surprised to hear how close they were to Styx, stylistically speaking. For some reason I always assumed they were of a different genre altogether. Maybe it was the name that threw me...

I am exactly with you! I was SO surprised to hear their very melodic style. Very similar harmonies to Styx and just in overall sound. I think that name threw me off as well. Made me think they were a more blues oriented band.

I'm jazzed. I just ordered the M.S. Funk CD.

Did they have more than 1 release?

Is this orginial material, covers, or a mix of orginial & covers?

Does Tommy do most of the leads?

Have any of you heard or have you purchased this CD?

Does it sound dated?

The band name makes them sound like that fusion garbage that Journey used to do.
