A review of Styx's new CD. Can't say I agree or disagree, have yet to get the CD or DVD (been laid up). But I got one coming in so I can say better then. But he does make two good points. 1) Seems like something Dennis would do (which he did very good too), 2) Would have been good to have all the hits there.-ERIC

I'd like to listen to the album once through without buying it or hear the DVD ... or at least hear someone whom I respect give me a solid "yes the DVD is sonically as good as the CD but with a superior mix" or the other way around.

I'd love to hear renegade with the orchestra, but I gotta buy the whole thing to get it on iTunes, which is cool - I just don't want to waste my money on JY songs and bullshit Gowan solo songs if I don't have to.

That was an interesting review. I think most of us here know that contractual reasons kept the DeYoung penned songs off of the DVD. But I am curious as to why they couldn't be included in the CD. They performed some of them at the show and they have included these songs in other live compilations. And what about songs like Lorelei and Queen of Spades that were co-written by Dennis. I guess is okay to include these. I was surprised at the C rating. Classic Rock Revisited usually treats artists better than that. But then, I am much more in the Tommy Shaw camp than the Dennis DeYoung camp.

I have the DVD and I saw the HDNET version. The mix is radically different between the 2. I have not heard the CD.
On the HDNET version, The orchestra and the vocals are way up front and the band is lost in the mix. The DVD mix is spectacular. It is very well balanced and the energy given off by the band and orchestra is contageous. I would give the production quality of this show an A-. It was shot by the HDNET remote facilities. It was produced much better than the Arch Allies video from 2001.

Yesterday I watched both the Styx and DeYoung DVD's. It is interesting that they have almost completely different setlists. I think that DeYoung's DVD incorporates the orchestra a little better. But his band sounds like rank amatures next to Styx.

It's the same when you see DDY live. They are not in the same league as Styx aside from DDY's voice which is still very good.

For the same reasons. Orchestration changes arrangement which means you need author's permission.

Your opinion. I don't agree.

However, I did appreciate the view on the DVD. I think I'll try to find it cheap and rip the audio from it instead of buying the CD. Then I can always re-sell on Amazon.
