I also read there will be a concert where all of those listed will perform. I would not mind seeing some Taylor!! :)

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — American Idol winner Taylor Hicks will reign as the Krewe of Endymion's grand marshal for the 2007 Carnival season.

The gray-haired, 30-year-old soul singer from Birmingham captured audiences this year with his vocal performances and curious dancing style on the hit reality TV show.

Singer Al Green and the musical groups Journey and Styx also will ride in the parade.

Endymion Captain Ed Muniz said Hicks will be a great ambassador to show America and the world that New Orleans is open to visitors.

Hicks' journey from self-taught musician to TV star has a Louisiana connection. He was in New Orleans for a wedding just before Hurricane Katrina struck on Aug. 29, 2005, and with his flight out of town canceled, he took a cab to West Monroe and turned his free plane ticket into an Idol audition trip to Las Vegas.

Endymion is among the city's largest Carnival groups.

How are they gonna fit both DFB AND Journey into the bed of a Ford F150? I guess that means they'll have to do it unplugged.

I don't think JY's ego would fit into the bed of an F150. 8)

It's pretty sad that Stynx and Journey have been reduced to riding on floats behind some joker who won a contest on some stupid TV show. :?

Well it just goes to show that there is no such thing as bad publicity..

I'm sure if Dennis was asked to be in the parade he'd do it Falcon for exactly the same reason!

This is quite a nice deal to be asked to perform for the Endymion celebration. (The parade is only part of it. There is a concert as well).

And Taylor Hicks is not some "joker". The guy is an awesome performer.

Jodes is right. Dennis would be happy to participate in such an event, I am sure.

LOL! I still think they will need a really big float to, uh, "float" JY's ego. :P

Taylor has that N.O. connection going for him, no question.

Yes, if ONLY his ego was as small as Dennis'.

(You'd STILL need a bigger float)

Here's a bit more information about this event from Taylor's blog site:

About the Extravaganza…..

It will be on February 17th beginning at 7pm in the Louisiana Superdome. Depending upon what happens during the route, the parade arrives around 8-9 pm and goes inside and through the Superdome (this is quite the audio/visual party for the senses).

Long dresses (not tea length) for the girls – tux for the guys. Entertainment is Styx, Journey, Al Green and Taylor. Taylor is bringing the band he played with for years – the Little Memphis Blues Orchestra. Local bands include The Wise Guys and the Chee-Weez. It is a BYOB party and participants are encouraged to bring sandwich trays or buckets of chicken or whatever. The party goes until about 4am. It’s a long night!! Many bring ice chests full of food and beverage which is fine.

Tickets are $150.00 each (worth every penny) and can be purchased by calling (504) 736-0160.

"Depending upon what happens during the route, the parade arrives around 8-9 p.m." This is, of course, if the float carrying JY's ego doesn't break down.

Sounds like a fun par-TAY and some good music (mostly ;) ) during the evening.

Anyone who has ever been on American Idle is a joker in my book. Manufactured celebrities who don't write any original music and will be forgotten in five years.

And yes, I misspelled "Idle" on purpose.

Isn't that the same type of show DDY was on in Canada that the DDY fans were making a big deal about?

The extravaganza is a big deal. I rode in that parade for many years. These guys along with Bacchus were the originators of the super floats that you see on tv for Mardi Gras. The party takes place on the floor of the superdome, and the crowd invitied to the party numbers somewhere close to 10,000. All decked out in formal attire and typical of the crescent city, boozed up!! Among the riders/performers from my days of riding include: Chuck Norris, Chicago, Earth Wind and Fire, Kool and the Gang, Alice Cooper, Roy Orbison, Steven Segal, Kenny rogers, Hall and Oats, The Miami Sound Machine, Dolly Parton, John Goodman, etc. So it actually is a major event. The Captain of the Krewe tends to get performers from days gone by, I am sure for econcomic reasons but also for mainstream listening purpose. Rap music will never be allowed. Usually it is somebody who can keep everybody up dancing and partying. KC and the Sunshine Band played several times. I still have connections through my years of riding. The Lord and Mrs. Lord are debating going. The tickets are a little pricey at approx $150/each. You are paying for the event. It is also BYOB. The only reason I am considering is the fact that I never got to see Journey in its heyday. Of course now they are two singers removed from that, but what the heck....we need a night out.

Yes.

And um, there are many idol winners who do write their own music. Taylor is one of them.

Plenty of talents have come through the American Idol system. Some are, yes, minor, but some are quite good and very, very talented.

Jennifer Hudson is being touted as an Oscar winner this year.

Kelly Clarkson (a major vocal talent, in my view) is heading on to 6X platinum with a sophomore album in which she had a hand in the songwriting and production.

Taylor Hicks was a long-time blues/soul artist who saw Idol as his last chance to maybe make it in the music industry. Turns out, he was right. Zan is correct. He is a songwriter and I found his indie album "Under The Radar" to be a lyrical/musical gem. A very intelligent, diverse and terrific (IMO) work. He wrote everything on it.

It is no secret that entertainers of every stripe want to appear on all incarnations of Idol, world-wide. It is quite a compliment to the entertainer/musician who gets one of these limited, coveted slots on such shows as American Idol, Canadian Idol, Pop Idol (now morphed into The X Factor in Britain), etc.

I do not dismiss the power of this show to find and promote some very talented individuals.

But I also understand it is not for everyone.
