sweetjo wrote:Congrats on your book Sterling! I have always wondered why there wasn't a bio (authorized or not) on this band. I can remember back when Paradise Theater was new and Styx was in every issue of "16 Magazine" and "Rockline". I bought them all and took them as gospel truth. I was 12. I remember reading that Tommy did not smoke, was single, liked girls who look like Cheryl Ladd and was nicknamed Munchkin! Was any of that true or did I really throw my babysitting money in the toilet of tabloid truisms?

well... i'd say that most of them were not true...and i think jeanne looks more like michelle phieffer than cheryl ladd. LOL!

Sterling,

I have a question that I believe some others may have.

Why do you think Dennis and JY declined to talk to you?

I'm sure Dennis felt that he got burned by VH1, on the Styx Behind The Music. Still he could of really set the record straight about alot of things.

As for JY, why wouldnt he speak? He seems like a media, self promoting hound. I would think he would be the first to purchase the book just to count up his quotes.

Cant wait to read it!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. One more quick question, on the survey that you are currently conducting on your books website, under the category Favorite Styx Performer you answered None.
Does that mean that you like all of them equally, or that you cant stand em all???

JY's position has always been that he feels Styx has nothing to gain from this book. In more recent years he, Tommy and Dennis have all cited the settlement of the lawsuit as well. There are many things they CAN'T say now. Dennis is also planning his own memoir at some point. Tommy spoke to me a long time ago and probably regrets much of what he said because it is different than what he says now.

I don't have a favorite member of Styx because it took all of them to make it what it was. Growing up my favorite guy was probably Tommy because I had blonde hair and blue eyes, too, lol. It's pretty obvious that Dennis and Tommy are the most important members in terms of the popular body of work . . . BUT, they would not be where they are without the contributions of everyone else, including their managers, label, crew, PR people, everyone.

I hope all is well.

I agree with Sterling. I have always felt that it was the chemistry of ALL of the members of the band (including John and Chuck) that helped Styx to achieve everything they did.

In my opinion, John and Chuck rarely get the credit they deserve. Of course, I may just have a chip on my shoulder because I'm primarily a drummer. But, I think their personalities and their playing styles made a huge impact on the Styx sound that I've come to know and love.

oh absolutely. But just like every masterpiece is made up of it's individual component (or ingredient), it also requires a catalyst to provide the spark to make magic happen. It's human nature to be influenced by the people around you, but it's leadership and the quality of it that enables things to go to higher levels.

Wow, how did you manage to beat me here? LOL, you must have been on my site when I posted that.

Yes, sadly it's been delayed, but not by too much I don't think. There will be some cool stuff online pretty soon, like my interview with Tommy Shaw, as well as a sample chapter so you can get a taste of what I've written. There's going to be some real world stuff coming soon, too, some reviews and maybe an article or two soon.

Thanks again for your patience. I hope all is well.

Me too! LOL. It's actually in the hands of other people at this point, production people. I will announce a new date just asap. Soon!
On a positive note, I spoke with Styx' manager yesterday and he has no problem with what I wrote, in fact he liked the book. And I had some good news about a major upcoming radio show feature that I will hopefully get to announce pretty soon.
Thanks everyone for your interest and patience!

Is the radio show something for just your book or is it a book and Styx related deal? Be something if Styx endorses the book wouldn't it :).

LOL, no chance in hell will Styx endorse my book, but at least it appears they won't come unglued about it, hopefully.
The radio show will be about the book but will also be about Styx, obviously . . . don't really know how it will play out as yet.
Thanks.

I know you said that Glen is doing the Foward for the book. I was curious to if you have heard anything out of DDY's camp on this? Have you talked to his mananger or has Glen showed DDY anything about the book. Since the Styx camp thought it was ok, I was wandering what DDY will think. You might could get him to sale it in the dennisdeyoung.com store.

Thanks

Yeah, that'll be the day! LOL!!!!!

Seriously, I don't know whether Dennis/Tim/Suzanne have or have not read/heard anything about it. No clue. I have no agenda with them, but obviously I conducted a lot of interviews for this, and I can't help what others have to say. Thus, there are things they won't like and I can't help that. The best I can hope for is that they can accept that it is balanced and does not victimize them. I know some people right around them have read it and think it is fair. Whether that will be their position as well remains to be seen, but under no circumstances are any of these guys going to endorse this book. I'd be beyond astonished if that happened.

I guess that means it is biased against Dennis and leans pro Styx if their manager endorses it... I may not get it after all..

Actually, he doesn't endorse, it, he just thought it was fair and accurate. It does not slant toward one side or the other, that's not what journalism is about after all. And a couple of people close to Dennis think it's unbiased as well. Everyone in this thing has their strengths and weaknesses.
I hope all is well.

I am looking forward to buying/reading it. To the best of my knowledge, it is the only thing ever published about Styx. Keep us posted Sterling.

From what I've seen of the book, it's pretty balanced. There are some things both camps may cringe at, but neither camp is painted in a way that one is the "victor". I think people will enjoy it.

The Styx story is complex and again, from what I've seen, this book reflects it. I don't think it was ever cut and dry for them. It's arguably the most accurate picture we'll ever get since the band would never tell the whole story - and in a fair and balanced way.
