This was really started as a joke, but now I think it warrants further investigation. How many instruments does Dennis play? Piano and the occasional rhythm guitar. Lyrics and music? Check. However, DDY has fewer songs for which he wrote the music and the lyrics.

Now, before "Listen Without Prejudice", GM's music was rather wretched, with the exception of a couple of songs off of his first solo LP.

Vocally, I'd say they're equals...both brilliant and virtually unparalelled.

Now, GM has "mastered" at least ten instruments, and has played EVERY SINGLE INSTRUMENT, WRITTEN, PRODUCED, AND MIXED TWO ENTIRE ALBUMS ON HIS OWN. Has Sir Dennis done that? No.

You know what? This isn't worth it. George has put out some incredible music on "Listen Without Prejudice", "Older", and "Songs From the Last Century". I really just wrote that to piss off Froy and Yogi. And I know damned well I'd have more fun at a Styx show with DDY than I would at a Wham! reunion gig.

Some of those lyrics are not goign to win any prizes and are right up there with the lyrics from "Yes I Can" in the "which former or current member can write the cheesiest lyrics" contest. The only one I disagree with are the lyrics from Mr. Roboto. Love it or hate it, the lyrics had a purpose and I think are quite witty.

Not meant to be a rebuttal. I have no interest in becoming part of the DDY vs Tommy et al. arguments. But, George Michael and Dennis Deyoung are not alone in their crappy, sappy writing. Nearly every big artist has come up with a stinker, or two or three or more in their career. If I said DDY held the patent on poor choice of lyrics, I would be a hip, hip hip-hopcrit (sorry, could not resist the horrible pun).

All well & good - except that wasn't the point. No one was saying Michael and DeYoung were the only artists capable of writing shitty lyrics. Someone made mention that NEVER had DeYoung written anything that could come close to [insert particular cheesy G. Michael lyrics here]. That was it. No mention of Tommy Shaw, James Young, Glen Burtnik, Lawrence, nothing. Only Dennis. Had Tommy's name been used in place of Denny's, I would have likely quoted "She Cares" or something from "What If." But it wasn't. Unsolicitedly bringing TS, JY, GB, LG, etc. into it only exaserbates the very argument you swear you have no interest in being part of.

Speaking of bad songs, has there ever been a general consensus list on this forum of the 10 worst A&M era Styx songs?

Perhaps, not sure. I know we've discussed the worst Tommy, JY, Dennis, Glen songs before, however.

Feel free to start a thread!

Why would Rajah actually read a post before he comments on it? HE already has his responses prerecorded.

Well there are these moments for all of the guys really:

Tommy Shaw:

My friends all try to give me friendly advice
they all agree I shouldnt' be so nice
women really like it when you push em around

I must have been born with a hole in my head

She treats me like a human
she says she'll still be there

and this is not a test, no video event
no science fiction quest for glory

I heard you're really something. Is it true you broke a million hearts?
Try a million and one.

James Young:

SSSIIITTTTTTIIINNG ON TOOOOOOP OF THE WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORLD

Toys .... Toys.... Toys for American Boys

{take your pick of any line from Midnight Ride}

Personally, I think KISS takes the cake for consistently crappy lyrics . . .

"Let's put the X in sex, love's like a muscle and it makes me wanna flex"

"Lick it up"

And how many frickin' times do they repeat "I wanna rock n roll all right and party every day"? Ouch!

And the list goes on. They make all the lyrics mentioned in this thread look like masterpieces.

But then again, I don't know that they were ever really known for their lyrics!

OK Zan/7 Wishes my point was initially meant to be a little ball busting too, but since none of us can see each other winking or smirking when we type..eh, what the hell. Point taken, DDY does not play each and every instrument on his solo records. We can always bring Paul McCartney to the table for an argument on that one or Todd Rundgren, Prince, etc. Hell when it comes to versatility, JY probably has DDY beat there. DDY does have some sort of ability to write for those instruments and be a pretty good producer of all sounds (excuse me most sounds b4 I get in trouble with the "precise police") from his records. I am not going to pick on any Tommy or JY songs (at least in this post - lol), and who hasn't danced to a George Michael song at some point in there life??
