While I won't go see this (seen enough of Styx - with and without DDY - doing just the hits), doing tours like this with Leppard and the one they did with Deep Purple in the UK gets them in front of many potential new fans and faces. This is just smart business, period.
The DL crowds were mostly won over by Journey last summer. If Styx can accomplish the same, good for them. Styx getting 75 minutes is about the same as the Main Event tour with REO and Journey. At least with the DL crowd it's not the same faces, since people who would go see Journey or REO would most likely go see Styx. You can't say the same for a DL crowd.
Jodes did have a point. DDY didn't do the Meat Loaf opener for the hell of it. It's smart business. I wish people would get over set length and such - these guys are out there to make a living. You evaluate an opportunity and make the right decision. I mean, think back to your days when you were starting out or trying to build your career. YOu needed exposure and contacts. Sometimes that means sucking up a "lesser" position to gain much more in the future. Is it a risk? Sure. But Styx or DDY wouldn't be where they are not if they didnt' take risks along the way.
It's a new world out there for musicians and bands. People are trying to survive. I don't begrudge Styx or DDY for doing things like this.
