What got you into Styx?

Postby GrandIllusionist725 » Fri Jun 29, 2007 2:22 pm

Im sure this posted some time ago, or maybe it hasn't, we will just see how this goes!!

What got you into Styx?

I would have to say Detroit Rock City. Its weird to fall in love with Styx from a movie about Kiss, but in that convenient store scene when the guy kisses the girl and Come Sail Away begins, i was hooked that second!

Now for you..
Go ahead, post away! :)

I was about 17. Just started driving. I was over a friends house partying and his older brother was heavy on playing the Equinox album. I loved it. He told us about the show coming to Merywether Post Pavillion coming the next week. John and I made the trip. And, I have been hooked since.

Hearing "Lady" on the radio. Those harmonies and the voice of Dennis DeYoung.

Didn't know who they were back in 77 or 78. I was 15 or 16 years old and won the Grand Illusion album off the radio... 92Q in the Nashville area. What an album to win!

I wrote:KWH was my gateway to Styx fandom as well. It was my first exposure to the rock-opera-concept-album thing, and I thought it was cool that a band would be trying something like that. KWH led me to CITA, which led me back to the A&M albums represented there ...which led to the discovery that I liked the 70's Styx better than the 80's Styx.

So, yeah...even though today I don't rank KWH very highly as a Styx album -- and even lower as a concept album -- I still have a soft spot for it.

I'm embarassed to say this now, but when I was a young teenager, I thought Tommy Shaw was cute (I was only 14, okay??). And I had always been into rock music (no girly stuff for me!), so the two meshed. Even my high-school boyfriend was a blonde, blue-eyed guitar player!

To this day, high-school buddies tell me that they still think of me everytime they hear Styx on the radio because I was such a fan.

Now you know my deepest, darkest secret. :-)

Lady. I liked it when it first came out. Then never heard from them again.
When GI came out, I liked Come Sail Away and a friend had free tickets to their show in Seattle.
I went and was hooked.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

I heard Mr. Roboto on the radio back in '82 or so, and couldn't stand it. Then I heard Don't Let It End and didn't care for it a whole lot, mainly because it was by the same band that did Roboto (that was my logic at the time). Anyway, a few years later a high school buddy of mine left a Caught In The Act cassette in my car, so I gave it a listen. Of course, it began with Music Time, so my initial thought was "Man, this band really sucks!" (which is funny to me, now) Fortunately, I got to some of the better (classic) tracks and that changed everything. From then I gradually became acquainted with their back catalog via the radio. Shortly thereafter, I bought Grand Illusion and Paradise Theatre, and my initial impressions changed to "Man, this is the greatest band of all time!"

Me too! First heard Lady on the radio in Philly around Christmas 1974. Then it climbed to #6 right around the time my friends were having a St. Patrick's Day party. Lady was the first song we heard on the radio at the party as we walked into the bar area.

the 1999 tour. LOL! ;) glen's just a sweetheart. and he rocks! and he's funny as hell! and he's a brilliant musician/songwriter (probably the most talented all around musician ever in styx -past or present), and he's put out some really INCREDIBLE music, and he can shake his ass/bass-hump with the best of 'em, and he's semi-local (for now), and he's a goofball, and.... i could go on ;) Glen is the only member of styx i've actually had in my hotel room. of course, his wife, daughters, and niece were there too, and i was 5 months pregnant- purely an innocent exchange of a bunch of video games for a concert ticket and an autograph on my guitar. ;)

don't get me wrong, i always was and will be a tommygirl, but glennie is right up there as well ;) Heck, toss in Rik Emmett, and i'm a really happy gal

OMG! I used to drive my mother NUTS with all those Tommy/Styx pinups. She wondered why she and my father bothered with wallpaper in my room!!!

And as a side bonus, it used to drive my younger sister nuts too and we shared a room until I was 16. Of course, Cornerstone playing on my turntable 24/7 in our room kinda got to her too. We used to fight over it. She's still talking to me now so it's okay. :-)

The first time hearing Styx I was about 4 or 5 and heard "Renegade" on the radio while we were at our trailer in Lake Eliza, IN and the beginning scared the daylights out of me lol........the second time was when I was listening to the the Loop (WLUP) and the now defunct "Mighty Met" WMET here in Chicago and remembering hearing songs from "Paradise Theatre". "The Grand Illusion" hooked me for good :D
