Dennis in Lisle IL

Postby LtVanish » Mon Jul 02, 2007 9:44 am

I was at the DeYoung show in Lisle IL last night. Big turn out, I would say 8,000 to 10,000 people there. Dennis' voice was in fine form, he sounds better than ever. Debut of a new guitarist in his band. Jimmy something from NJ, wondering a friend of Glen? He was a seasoned pro, cause he laided out some killer riffs. Dennis' band sounds unbelievable now, this was by far the best that I have heard them. Dennis played 3 new songs, and he announced it was the first time he has ever played "100 YEars from Now" in total english. After hearing this song live in English, I hope he does not record this song as a duet, this is a killer live track and was received well by the crowd, all I could say was wow. He also played "This Time Next Year" and "Save Me." He had the new album on sale and looked like there was a nice line over there all night. I have been a supporter of both sides in the Styx camp for a while and I have seen Styx not long ago. I honestly think Dennis' band sounds better right now musically and vocally there is no contest.

Does anyone have any info on the new guitarist?

Was the guitarist a second guitarist or did he replace Tommy?

He's added a second guitarist in Stephane Dufour in Canada, so he may be doing the same in the US .... The sound is much fuller with a second guitarist. His new songs can't be done without a second guitar now ....

that would be the one and only Jimmy Leahey. he's an amazing guitarist, long time compadre of glen's, and in his current Synchronicity project. I've had the pleasure of seeing Jimmy perform at numerous Xmas Xtravaganzas, as well as the Rock to the Rescue project in 2002, and a number of glen solo gigs. i believe he's also played with another Burtnik buddy, John Waite.

here's a link to the synchronicity myspace page, where you can find out more about jimmy, glen, and a talented drummer named odell! :D

Yep that is him, he was awesome last night. Dennis mentioned that he had only rehearsed with the band just hours before the show for the first time. I'm guessing he will be performing at any show that Glen isn't.

Thanks for that review, Lieutenant! Warms MY heart and makes me wish I has been there.

StM: Appreciate the fill-in on the guitarist, Jimmy Leahy. He looked a bit familiar when I followed the MySpace link. Was he with John Waite at the DDY Rockford show, anyone who was there know or remember? Whatever, both John and the guy with him were tremendous together that night. If it IS the same guy, he is an awesome guitarist.

Plenty of talent and karma to go around, folks. No need to oversell it.

I'm noticing something that Dennis and his management seems to be doing. They seem to be constantly turning up the volume. It started with the orchestra shows and a wild idea. Then he started doing lost treasure shows with just the rock band. Then he added Glen on occasion. Now he's recorded a new album with some fresh blood in the mix and is now adding more rock and roll elements to the show. I think it would be pretty amusing if Dennis started killing on stage with the talent in his band and the power of his new album. Not that his show lacked anything before - but I remember a number of us saying from time to time "Man, if he would just add a grab-you-by-the-ass guitar player how much it would add to the sound"... it seems that is happening.

Thats the one thing being a solo act has going for Dennis. He can change out parts, add guitarists and such without the scrutiny than if say Styx were to add another guitarist or keyboardist or what not. When Dennis does this - almost nobody will notice because Dennis *IS* the attraction. When Styx does it (or journey for that fact) does it, it becomes a joke.

Interesting.

true Ash,

Mnay of us have been saying for a long time tha a lot of what was missing was that 2nd guitar to fill out the sound. It is nice to see that Dennis has seen the difference in the sound when that 2nd guitar is there and has reacted accordingly.

I did find out that the guy who joined them at this concert, Jimmy Leahey, was indeed the guy with John Waite that I saw in Rockford. He is a terrific guitarist and I hope he joins Dennis on tour now to fill in, or permanently.

It really does add to the overall sound to have that second guitar player, no question.
