Hypoithetical here..

What would that album have felt/sounded like? In other words, instead of what each memeber brought to Brave New World, Dennis, Tommy, and JY had come together with the material that emerged on 100 Years and Cyclorama and created a Styx album based around those songs. What would the result have been? Would it have been their Aerosmith/Santana moment? Would it have gotten any play? Would it have been critically acclaimed?

The fans probably would have liked it better but critical acclimation is something Styx at its peak never really got with the "important" rock press.

Another problem is that the themes and lyrics in some of the best songs in 100 years (IMO) seem derived from the break-up with Styx.

You said exactly what I was going to say, blt. The whole theme and impetus of many of the best songs on "One Hundred Years" are the post-breakup songs. The moving on songs. They would never have been written if the group had stayed together.

EXCEPT that Roseland's lyrics weren't much different from many of the lyrics on 100 Years, so I'm not entirely sure it wouldn't have been possible. I seriously doubt Styx will ever have a Santana moment - they are not that well-respected in the music community, but it is possible the combination of the two forces could have produced a spectacular album. I won't use BNW as a gauge because I liked BNW for the most part and am happy they released it in spite of the controversy surrounding it, but I do think Cyclo and 100 Years would have made for a great "You got chocolate in my peanut butter" moment, for sure.

The Santana moment was an exception indeed. Santana collaborated with younger rock musicians/singers and had the support and push of a mega music mogul behind his CD. I don't know if Jack Black and Billy Bob is what Styx had in mind to give them that Santana moment. While DDY has kind of had a little bit of that moment in Quebec, similar to Santana it was collaboration with a popular (French) rock singer that probably helped broaden the appeal (if DDY decides 100 years should be a duet in English, he should definately look to a young person to sing the other half of the song).

But, Styx and/or DDY do not need to gold or higher status. They have done that already. They only need to make good music and sell a few.
