Doesn't sound as good without the other guys. Plus he sings the chorus in a lower key and adds that classical piece that is not of eight.

This was a really nice live performance of this song.
Plus he sings the chorus in a lower key

Sings it as he always has -- then and now -- the low part of the harmony.

The middle harmony, actually. Rather like "Best Of Times."

I don't mind the Mountain King interlude. Less intrusive than the Bolero in "Lady." Funny that when Styx did Po8 as part of the medley, they played the one section left out of this rendition.

He replaced this drummer eventually, right?

Listen..I like the song and glad he is doing it but I would rather hear it as originally recorded.

It's cool to see him play that. I'd rather see him play it as written though. The instrumental section in the middle was always one of my favorite pieces of Styx music.

I guess maybe Dennis felt that it would be cool to do something different with the orchestra.

Would have been kinda cool to hear the two sections ping-ponging back and forth. Glad the tune is getting some play in any case, though.

Not a lot of pop/rock in the audio clips, but he sounds pretty good. Maybe he can provide the sorely-missed pocket.

I didn't mind the classical interlude either. I do prefer the original, but this was kinda cool too. Funny about the medley (RIP) playing the exact opposite, I agree.

Having seen it live a few times, the middle was definitely retooled because there was an orchestra but he does it that way w/o an orchestra, too. However, I tend to agree - the song "Pieces of Eight" and that middle section (which Styx actually did do as part of the now gone medley) is one of my favorite bits of Styx music. And yes, I know it's Tommy's song, but it would have been cool to hear "Aku Aku" as well.

I was just glad this song got un-mothballed.

And yet...there has always been a bolero in Lady.

I personally like the original version of PoE without Mountain added. It isn't bad, but it's not my favorite.

To each his/her own.

I have always found the instrumental interlude in PoE one of my favorites. Intricate and powerful at the same time. While "Hall of the Mountain King" is fine and works well with a big orchestra, the original is by far the best and my favorite.

Nice to hear this great song live. He's a bit flat at the start of it, but big deal. Sounds good. I was always bummed that they didn't do this live when Styx was together. As for the classical bit in the middle, yeah, it's cool especially for Halloween. I do prefer the originally recorded section for the middle though. The classical part here makes it a bit like a Fresh Air recording. He's singing the same part he did with Styx on the chorus, btw.
NO. He's NOT Steve F'ing Perry. But he's Arnel F'ing Pineda and I'm okay with that.

Heh. I look at the 1978 tour as the beginning of the end for varied setlists pretty much. By the 78 tour we pretty much have a good chunk of the core of even the modern day Styx setlist. The last time they really stretched (IMO) was the Paradise Theater tour where they did like 2 and a half hours of music and you had cool things like the "007 Intro/Great White Hope" thing, and they even pulled out "Nothing Ever Goes As Planned" a handful of times (I have it floating around somewhere).

I saw them play Nothing Ever... wasn't impressed. Played it well, but just the song itself was a Styx low-point for me. I seem to remember them having roadies limboing on stage. Never dug the song much. Still, it's always nice to hear something different...

Yeah. At least they were still doing the gonzo version of Midnight Ride, though. Truly the end of an era when that was put out to pasture.

I find it weird that he plays this version in his rock band shows. I saw it live with his "7 piece band" (I guess is wife is now a "piece") in Toronto and the it seemed out of place. I guess thats just the version the band knows and it would be too much of a hassle to rehearse the original way.

THANX!! froy! I think it's COOL! :D
That song is another one of my favorites for alot of reasons. It is good to hear it live and it is good to hear Dennis's voice, singing it!! 8) IMHO, he has to do what he can to make it sound as close to the original as he can. Much like "current Styx" does. I think he did a good job!! :D

They don't always please me. I want new music, I want to hear different songs played live. Some just can't accept ANY criticism of Dennis.
