I get a little tired of never hearing anything about the fabulous bassist for Styx Ricky Phillips! He is one of the best in the business and a living doll to boot. I believe he has added alot to Styx just as he did to The Babys ehen he was added after the departure of Michael Corby. Let's hear a little love for the guy PLEASE!!!! 8)  8)

Sorry Gail, although Ricky's talented, he's just a hired gun.. My judgement for him might improve if he writes some solid songs with the guys from Styx, but since that won't happen anytime soon, nobody really has an opinion on him..

I must have missed the group meeting when we all decided to make you our spokesperson, Jodes. ;-)

I think Ricky's a fine bassist and musician and a nice guy to boot - just because he's a hired gun doesn't diminish his abilities as an artist or performer as a whole.

I still have yet to have a chance to see Ricky and form an opinion. Even tho I've never seen him play with Styx, I gotta say I miss Glen, but not holding that against him or anything. I support the band and not any one individual, even tho I think some are kewler and nicer than Otters.

I've met them all sans Ricky and John C.... I've met quite a few Otters tho.

BTW, Otters are a longstanding joke that the ex-Majordomo and Indra listees would really understand.

Wish Rik, Rick, and Dean would show up here. :-(

The only thing I'll say about him is that his bass is too loud in the live mix.

Ricky's the bass player in the band I love and does a good job at what he's paid to do. Beyond that, I have to say I miss Glen too.

Rowdy has a fetish for otters. You can blame Rick from the UK for that.

btw- i agree- nice shot of Ricky.

For the record, Ricky is a fine bass player and fits in well with the band. But he's not Glen, who certainly brought much more to the table. Just watch any of the 1999-2003 shows. He kicked up the energy level at least 30 or 40 notches. ;) Of course I'd love to see him back with styx, but I know he's not fond of 150 shows a year either, and i'm sure he'd want to sing more than 1 song a night.

I've got to agree with you there.

Ricky's strength is that he went into the group knowing what was expected of him. JY and Tommy let him know that they were going to tour until they drop. I expect him to be around a long time.

I thought Todd, Gowan and Glen were all great additions to the band and they each brought a certain intangible to the show. Ricky was the first small step backwards.

I am pretty sure that Night Ranger was relatively dormant at the time of the switch. I think Jack Blades would have been the best choice for a replacement for Glen.

As a bass player, I think Ricky does a fine job and by all accounts is a swell guy.

My big issue is how he's changed the bass part on "Blue Collar Man" which I've discussed more than once. It's bad - changes the whole feel of the song for me. Other than that, no real issues. He's doing his job and he seems to mesh well vocally and playing-wise.

I think JY or Tommy is going to drop a lot sooner than anyone else thinks. Touring at their pace would be tough on 30-year olds, so it must be pretty hellish when you're pushing 60.

Guess the Stones, Eagles, Floyd, nor Neil Diamond (among others) never popped into that moronic brain of yours before you typed this up.

Also, none of them put on quite as athletic a performance as Styx does. (Maybe the Stones...haven't seen them recently.)

Overall, though, I'd say the fact that the clock's running out is the best reason to keep going. This is what they love to do...what's the point in holding back?

OMG!! I can't believe I forgot I met Chuck! And just a few months ago, too. How embarrassing...
Must be all that pot I used to smoke. :P

Sorry you miss your friends. Being fairly new to the internet and message boards, I've never seen that about "otters". It did make me laugh, though! :D

Hey j**koff...like someone else mentioned, NONE of those bands does 200 or so shows a year any more. Mainly because, unlike STYNX, they don't HAVE to. Stynx has to keep touring to pay off medical bills from Tommy and JY's previous drug problems and Tommy's four alimony payments. Stynx continues to morph into Spinal Tap more every year.

I could be wrong but.. If you've been married three times and still married to your third wife, that makes you divorced twice? how does that equal FOUR alimony payments???

It doesn't. He just likes to tell that one because he thinks it's really funny.

Either that or his exes had REALLY good lawyers.

Hey @$$hAt, you never mentioned how many shows they played, just mentioned their age. Oh yeah, the Stones, Eagles, Floyd, and Zepplin never used drugs... and not sure about JY, just because "Snowblind" was about coke, doesn't mean he used it. Tommy's previous use of drugs is well known, but I can't remember anything about JY using. Admittedly, I haven't read Chuck or Sterling's books.
