DDY's rain

Postby classicstyxfan » Sat Dec 01, 2007 9:56 am

A few disclaimers before I post on this topic..........

1. I really do like this song, and think the New CD is brilliant.
2. more often then not, my views lean in the pro-dennis direction.

Now, Regarding the song Rain, maybe its the producer wannabe in me, but I think it would be even better with a few adjustments to the mix / sound.....

the 1st half of the song feels a little "styx-lite-ish" to me.....I'm not sure if it's because of the sound of the drums, which seems tinny or treble heavy (or the Drumming itself, it's rather simplistic) or if it needs more guitar in the mix or a combination of all of the above. I have no problem with The 2nd half of the song, and the Vocals are fine throughout.

I also find myself wondering how different it might have sounded with Todd S on drums and TS (and maybe JY ) on guitar & backing vox.

SO does this make me an DDY fan imposter ??? Discuss......

The only major problems I have with "Rain" are the drumming and production (especially the production of said drums.)

So...uh....I guess that makes this a "me too" post.

I have no problem with the guitar on Rain.

As for the drumming, when I saw Dennis a couple of onths ago, the worst part of the show was the drumming. Sounded too thin. I don't know if thats how Dennis likes it or if the old drummer was simply not very good. I would love to hear the new drummer to compare.

Heh. I know you like you some Dennis, Classic.

On to the discussion. I like the first part of Rain for that insistent synth. It sets the tone for the whole song for me. That said, I do like the latter part of the song best myself as well.

I have no idea what influenced Dennis to write this song, but I certainly picture the news footage of the aftermath of Katrina in New Orleans myself every time I listen to it. But, like a lot of what Dennis writes, this song can have multiple meanings.

I really didn't notice the drum backing in this song as being a problem. Maybe because the voice and the synth take the fore so much in it.
