What else would be left other than some "lost" demo tapes?

I'd have to agree with you on this. Given the opportunity to package CITA seperately from the videos, they chose to put what would have been 2 dvd's worth of material as one. They must feel this is their last chance to cash in on the Styx bandwagon.

Well, off the top of my head from a music standpoint (all known to exist and floating around; I'm not talking demos we don't know about):
1. Styx version of "Chain Me Down" (done in at least demo form in 1977)
2. The Son of Edge stuff (which would be shady for A&M since it was really demos to get a deal)
3. Unreleased live album from 1977 (which was the rumored 2nd disc of the scrapped Grand Illusion Deluxe Edition)
4. Gulf War "Show Me The Way"
5. The official outtakes from CITA (i.e. "Great Balls of Fire")
6. "Heavy Metal Poisoning" (live b-side of US "Music Time" 45)
7. "Boat on the River" (live) - from the Euro CD singles and a Euro 45
8. "Crystal Ball" from the Roadie soundtrack
9. The two Japanese promo only remixes for "Mr. Roboto" (on a very rare and very expensive 12" I own - each is like 10 minutes long)
10. The infamous "Babe" demo

There are a few more videos, most notably all of the Edge stuff, and a few more from the classic period (like all the ones from Pieces of Eight). But I'm happy I even got this stuff.

There is also a TW4 demo floating around. The demo was mentioned in Sterling's book.

Isn't there a live recording from the Paradise Theater tour also? I remember JY speaking about it on a Rockline show.

The band does have that stuff, but in the A&M vaults? Don't know. All tours '77 on have some sort of soundboard representation even if it was just video.

Maybe when they're in their 70's someone will release some of this stuff. Or maybe never. It's too bad really. If the "catalog still sells" why not release some vintage stuff.

I have always maintained they'd make more selling this stuff themselves. Like King Crimson, release fan-related stuff which will sell at shows, on a website, etc. They won't sell millions of copies, but they'll probably make more money than they did with their past few releases combined.

Having said that, I agree with Sterling here - releasing classic-era (76 - 83) lineup stuff with Dennis is a reminder of what the band was, not is. And you'd have to pay DDY something lol

CITA was already released, is a known quantity, so no risk in releasing it even if the band doesn't love it.

Got mine today.

What I don't like:

--Picture quality is ok, but not great.

What I DO like:

--Sound quality is good.
--The Roboto menu
--The Kilory movie. I don't care what others think. I love this little movie.
--Getting some CLEAR quality videos of "Borrowed Time" (Whoa! Those jeans, Dennis! ) and "Haven't We Been Here Before" (So many little subtle things I missed because of lousy picture quality. It is STILL a weird video, but I do like it. Love the scenes in the gambling joint/bar)
--Two words: MUSIC TIME!

The videos from youtube by Universal with the "relaid audio" track makes sense now, seeing they are all on the dvd.

To me, the movie and Music Time are so dated. I find very little to like about either any longer. The concert.. the songs where they actually play instruments....yes those I still like.

Anyone know if there are any "easter Eggs" in this DVD?

As for rare stuff, a certain guy who was close to the band told me years ago he has lots of recordings of the guys from the early days on reel to reel tapes, but he has told me he's keeping them close to his chest..

I'm watching the DVD now - only through part of the movie, but it seems like the 5.1 is a folddown (meaning they ran it through a processor to create faux 5.1; they didn't go back to the original multitracks and remix). I could be wrong, but I don't think I am. I bet the videos are the same - but that remains to be seen.

For the concert the surrounds are mainly the crowd - no surprise there. It sounds "sweetened" (i.e. they added some crowd noise to the existing crowd noise) for the 5.1 mix.

I have to admit, I still love the Kilroy movie. Sure, it's dated a bit, but still entertaining.

I really have to find a way to get my lighted mask working.

This brings back memories for me..ordered this on Video when it first came out, it included a poster and I sat with my then girlfriend and made her watch it twice (She left me a few months later!) A few years back I'd probably of re-ordered this but not now, it's dated and to be honest doesn't hold the test of time, once seen, best forgotten.

I remember seeing in an ad once a clip of Sing for the Day from the Pieces of Eight videos, but that was the ONLY time I've ever seen any of those films. What other ones did they make? I noticed Fooling Yourself wasn't on this either. I've got that somewhere...

I remember reading in an article in 77 or 78 that they had a song they were working on called "Worshiping Heroes". It never turned up as a release, but I wonder if it exists.

Also, I remember playing Music Time in skating rinks when I was a kid in a band. The audience always liked it. Fun song for the times.

Is there a full version of the "borrowed time" video that Dennis is doing in the Roboto pre-movie or was that a special video just for that? I have only seen the early version of it. I have not got my copy of CITA yet so wasn't sure which "Borrowed time" is on it.

Thanks

"sweetened"- definitely. There's a LOT of extra crowd noise that's piped in. I forgot how funny the "Dr. Righteous" segment was. I mean, JY played that up really well. You gotta bet that was weird for him, but it comes off pretty funny. This would've been a great Broadway kind of thing. I think out of the acting parts, Tommy definitely comes off the worst, "Dammit! Dammit". Kills me. I like him in the little movie though. During that concert, Tommy definitely hits a few clams as well, guitar-wise. It's amazing to me how much of a better singer Tommy is now than he was then. He has a lot more resonance and range now than he did then. Dennis's voice sounds pretty much the same with more bottom end these days. He still has his range, but his lower end is much more full. JY, sounded much better then than he does now.

Some of the extra videos are pretty grainy. I'm surprised that there aren't better prints in the hands of A & M or even Don Kirshner's "Rock Concert" (at least for Come Sail Away. I still remember Kirshner introducing this as "A supergroup who styles themselves after KANSAS..." funny since Kirshner managed Kansas, didn't he?). I think I have a better print on a BETA tape somewhere, that also has "Fooling Yourself". The sound of CSA is really good though. THAT is when Deyoung looked cool. It's too bad that somebody couldn't have worked on the film quality a bit more.

Nice to see "Borrowed Time" on here. Dang, these guys look so young here. John looked great with his big FRO- Neal Schon eat your heart out. There's one scene where Dennis is in Chuck's face and it looks like Chuck wants NOTHING to do with him. Yikes. Holy crap! Pants were really high wasted back then! Dennis looks SO Italian in this. He could be a pizza chef!

So, everyone knows that Dennis has been happily married for 75 years or something... I wonder, do you think that "Don't Let it End" is a not so veiled message to Tommy? It's pretty common knowledge he was hating Styx at that time.

Nice to see a clear version of Boat on the River. I had only seen it on YouTube up until now. You can really see Tommy's bum teeth. When did he get them fixed? Otherwise, Tommy looks like my first girlfriend! Dennis is trying to be smiley with Tommy when he first coming into the scene and Tommy's having none of it. Geez Tommy, at least LOOK like you're pals...

"Too Much Time On My Hands" is a cool video. Cool that they got to act a little bit. DeYoung should've been an actor. He appears to dig it. So does JY actually.

Then we get to the "Mr. Roboto" video... dang... dancing robots... WHAT were they thinking? They should've thrown the VW commercial in as an easter egg. THAT was funny. Deyoung starts to look pretty geeky in this video doing the robot dance and kind of stumbling around. ick.. For me, this was the moment the band came down a peg. I think it was largely because of this video. I do remember liking the "Heavy Metal Poisoning" video. Weird not to see Dennis in that one. I think if that pre-concert movie had been aired on MTV and then these videos shown, it could've been very cool as a package or full length video. Seperately, the videos don't work. Especially Mr. Roboto because there's nothing to set that whole thing up. Wasn't this pre-Thriller? If the movie and these videos were tied together, it could've been pretty groundbreaking.

"Haven't We Been Here Before"- I thought I'd seen this, but there must be another version out there or something. Weird imagery. I've seen the Tommy parts before, but had somehow never seen the part in the restaurant. Was this put out after the Kilroy album and tour was done and Tommy had moved on? It's obvious that it was a separate vision, separately filmed with Shaw not there with the rest of the band.

Okay- I don't care what anybody says- "Music Time" was a cool song. What a bizarre video though. I remember this one getting a lot of airplay on MTV. Probably because it was different than the typical band video. I thought there was something about "We interrupt this video to bring you a guitar solo". They took that out. Okay, the part with JY in the little beanie, glasses and twirling bow tie... He must cringe when he sees that. Hilarious looking. So did Tommy have to be persuaded to do the cameo in the video?

wow, random stream of consciousness here... sorry folks!

I was about to post something about this when I read your review on it. I noticed the same thing after seeing music time so I had to go back to my video collection on my pc and look at my copy of "music time". Around 2:40, the tv has on it "please stand by", and that is where you hear a voice (Jy?) saying "we interupt this video for the guitar solo. This video probably has the new relaid-audio that styxfanNh talks about.

Yup. Done during the same session as when "Come Sail Away" was done. Same clothes, etc. There's also one for "Miss America" from the same batch. I have them on Beta somewhere... There's also "Sing for the Day", "I'm OK", etc. So what's on this collection definitely is not all of the stuff from the early years. There are two versions of "Babe" - one of which is on this DVD. And then there are all of the EOTC videos.

So A&M/Uni could have done a real Styx video collection on its own - the material is out there.

What's disappointing is that the version of "Music Time" is an alternate version, so the original version which most people reference here (the one that has the bit about announcing the guitar solo) is now left to videotape and old promo collections and will never be seen again.

I finally got around to watching the videos.

The "Babe" video (as well as the "Borrowed Time" and "Boat on the River" ones) have been floating around forever on boots from Japan. This is not the other "Babe" video, so that one's still in the can.

It's nice to see "Haven't We Been Here Before" in pristine condition. I had a Nth generation copy. I remember thinking when I first saw it that by the time it was made, they abandoned the Kilroy concept and were just pushing the song as just another single. It's weird to see Tommy's old teeth lol And Chuck looks like a whole different person (go figure).

I do miss the "real" "Music Time" video. My guess is they relaid the audio and in the process, you got the album mix - not the original audio. YOu see the "Please Stand By" message where it was. The quality of this one is *grainy*.

The version of "Music Time" I got off of VH1 Classic is much better quality than the one on this DVD. I think it has the guitar solo, but it has been awhile since I watched it.
