Best solo - Lukather

Postby hydraturnback » Thu Mar 13, 2008 9:10 pm

Hi Guys,

I know it is a hard question, but (in your humble opinion) what is the best solo Luke has EVER recorded????

This could be on a Toto record, A solo record or a Live recording - or a session record.

For me, there is a few, but Gypsy Train on KOD comes to mind....and While My Guitar Gently Weeps that is a beaut.

Shit - I have just realised...this is a loaded question... there could be HUNDREDS of songs!!!

Anyway - I put it out there....

Peace

There's a ton, but a real moment of brilliance is on te first track of Richard Marx's Rush Street - think it's called playing with Fire...Luke's Kingdom of Desire era sound, killer solo

Tough to pick the best. Ok at gunpoint and off the top of my head, I'll go with Smell Yourself off Los Lobotomys. It's simply smoking as is the song.

Yeah and speaking of King of Desire, I just had the album on a few days ago, Jake to the Bone surely ranks among the very best.

Yeah..Playing with Fire is surefire smoking for sure...

JohnH, just listened again to Smell Yourself, and you are right about that one too - Killer.

KOD has to rank as one of the best TOTO albums, surely???
I love the rockier sound and Luke not only shines on Guitar, but vocals too.

...ok, ok - another one...

Just listened to "Livin' in the limelight" - Peter Cetera (1981)

Luke doing some great riff work AND a killer solo.
Back in the days when Cetera left the ballads behind (his first solo album is great!)

I'm not sure Luke himself would even be able to answer what his own favorite solo is, he's played so many. I really like Luke the best when he's playing melodically. I'm gonna stick to Toto

Couple faves:

I'll Be Over You
Out of Love
Gift With a Golden Gun - Live in Amsterdam version - Unreal
Only the Children outro solo
Bottom of Your Soul - Acoustic gtr/piano call and response - One of the coolest Toto moments for me

Too many prime Luke solos for me to choose from.

Let's just say that I feel like I took Viagra every time I listen to the Kingdom of Desire album. GREAT guitar work and musicianship all around on that one..

I love his solo on live versions of "Stop Loving You."

Don't know why the studio version fades out so quickly...the end is amazing.

Animal is a GREAT song - the only thing that let's it down is the Byron vocal.

But the MUSIC is fantastic. A great vibe - and Jeff's groove is on show...

Come to think of it, Can You Hear What I'm Saying has the same issue - a great song/vibe/sound - a shit Lead Vocal.

Honestly...and I hope Luke is on here and reads this...I think just about EVERYTHING he records is TITS.

I know, I sound like one of the "wacked out" fans he talks about who think he is perfect. Not true. I just respect the HELL out of his talent and his recorded works, with and without Toto!

Luke, man you need to give yourself a bit more credit...you really CAN play that wonderful plank of wood we call the guitar...

Out.

...Well - I think that Luke will have to just get used to one or two "wacked out" fans - comes with the job Mr. L!!! Haha!!!

Seriously though - there are a FEW great players out there... Schon, Satch, Landau, Huff etc.... and I assume that they have all got their "can't do no wrong" fans. But, come on.. when you are one of the best in the business (and music being SO subjective) you are likely to get either end of the spectrum...lovers or haters of your work...so Luke is probably right in agreeing with NO-ONE....(and he seems like a REAL HUMBLE guy)

However Tomulator - I agree with you.
Luke, Jesus man - If you are reading...don't put that guitar down in a hurry....YOU ROCK!!!

ALL TIME best Luke solo :

Talk To Ya Later ( The Tubes )...! Luke was all over the song and the solo in the song was just mindblowing !

Non-Toto / Solo :

Playing with Fire - Richard Marx
Forever - Kenny Loggins
Borrowed Time - Candyman (solo)
Nothing You Can Do About it - Richard Marx
Does Love Not Open Your Eyes ( Kurt Howell )
Alone (the I-Ten version ) - I-Ten
Love Hurts - Cher
Runaway - Bill Champlin
Never Ending Night - Ever Changing Times (solo)

There's just TOO many in the Toto albums to start naming 'em..!

I met Luke for 5 minutes a couple of days ago...dude was tired, just got off a flight that was delayed, and I gave him my hand wanting to shake his hand and he didn't bother...

Instead he came up to me and gave me a hug..!!!! Took a photo with him, to which he said "You sure..? I look like shit, man.." and I said " no problem man, I look like shit too ! " he chuckled and we took a photo, of which I will ALWAYS cherish forever....

Luke da man...

Cheers
