My personal collcetion of music is heavily populated with music that was released prior to 1990.........and I'm curious as to what more recent music people here think is an absolute "must have" in their personal collection ?

Just looking for some ideas in case I cant figure out how to spend the tax refund......

Agreed. I think In Absentia is probably still their definitive work, but everything they've done in the last 10 years or so has been fantastic.

MUSE's Black Holes & Revelations would be another solid choice, IMO.

Can't speak for the second one, but I am assuming that Classicstyxfan as asking about NON-STYXlike albums when he asks the question about good music post 1990. I could be wrong, but I'm fairly sure he's aware of all of the Styx-related releases already.

I love WTH. Still, Palookaville is standing the test of time for me as the best of his CDs.

Frederikson/Denander - Baptism by Fire - actually has regular rotation in the car by me and my son. Not a bad song on it and some really well crafted lyrics.

Joe Jackson - Volume 4 (the new one Rain is good as well as is most of his output from 1991 - present; the only one I don't really like too much is NIght Music)
Green Day - American Idiot
Anything by the Yellowjackets (and no, they are not jazz light at all ... these cats can swing esp. live), but if I had to pick one, Mint Jam
Howard Jones - a lot of it. He's done some good work post-major label (esp. Live Acoustic America, Working in the Backroom, and People, Revolution of the Heart)
Bryan Adams - Unplugged (after Into the Fire, my fav of his; although some of his studio albums like On A Day Like Today are pretty good)
Mike & The Mechanics - M6
Squeeze - Some Fantastic Place

Classic, looks like "American Idiot" made several Best Of lists here. You won't be disappointed if you buy it, and they are sort of the progenitors of that sound. Modern punk? Alt punk? Not sure of the designation but copycats include Blink 182 and Sum 41 (although I like Sum 41).

It really is a great album front to back.
