Of course, they displaced a bunch of their people and burried centuries of history. But that is what happened in providing for the countries' future. That will never happen here. Not with NIMBY principle strongly in effect.

Yeah it really is too bad that our government can't just go up to 1.5 million people and tell them to "get the fuck out".

not quite what I meant. Not even remotely suggesting that we have that number of people displaced. Inevitably, some will. Either by the loss of jobs or investing in the countries future. WE are easily 15 years behind in addressing the energy issue in a meaningful way.

John Kerry says I support wind energy, then when it comes to putting it off the shore of Massachusetts.

or when companies want to look to places like Anwar or the Gulf of Mexico to expand access to oil, and they say no.

Or even looking to alternate locations to build a dam, or expand the use of Nuclear Energy, none of that can ever happen here because of the special interest groups.

NH,

I was mostly kidding. :D

The simple fact is when alternate energy sources become cheaper than oil, they will be used. That's it.

Alot of the reason that the 'special interest groups' or the 'enviromentalists' seem to get their way is (conspiracy theory here) our (USA) intention was to use all the oil in the Mideast first and sit on our reserves in Alaska and the Gulf of Mexico. When the Arabs ran out of oil, we would have the balance of oil and the means to produce food and practically everything else.

That would completely tilt the balance of power our way.

I wouldn't have given the theory much thrift, except I heard it from a 'higher up' in the military.

They will NEVER level out. Now that the general public has been conditioned to these high prices, they will never go back down other than a slight bit. Remember when 2 dollars (U.S.) was considered outrageous?!?!?

Wouldnt it be great if we cut our demand for gasoline by 15 or 20 percent ? Im not sure it would bring prices down, but it would be a nice statement to the rest of the world.

And that would also have a great deal to do with the fact that the same autos that Janesville produces are produced in Arlington, Texas, and Silao, Mexico. I know...because I talk with the same Janesville plant you are referring to on a daily basis. That and the fact that their facility cannot keep up with the insane amount of autos that GM plans for. I can tell you that there has been a strike that is now in week 11 for GM axle manufacturing. Were GM to have planned their inventory correctly the strike would have impacted them much quicker. Instead, they are bailing out the axle manufacturer...200 million dollars. Janesville has an uphill battle to stay in business. It is quite the shame for the workers there. I sincerely mean that.

There is a great deal more at play here. and myopia reigns supreme.

An update:

It is as I said. The Janesville facility will be closing.

Ah but though I may have that mayonnaise jar on my front porch...Funk & Wagnall's continues to let me down.

Were I to have those numbers...well perhaps we could negotiate

I am sorry you were right about GM Janesville, but anyone building gas guzzlers is on the endangered species list.

I'm hearing in the media here that the plant was among the highest rated in the country regarding quality of product made. I have no idea what they are basing that on or if it's even true........if it is, retooling the plant to make smaller vehicles would make sense if not cost prohibitive.

They are grasping at staws down there to any morsle of hope they can find.

While I genuinely liked the people at the Janesville facility for the vehicles they produce...their plant is archaic. it would be extremely cost prohibitive to revamp the plant. I can state that the other facilities seemed to have a much more stringent view on what acceptable product is. There are many plants here. And if they go ahead and finally eliminate the truly awful Hummer, those plants are more inclined to get revamped. I do sincerely hate the prospect that people will lose jobs and income.

In terms of gas guzzlers and endangered species list...yes...to an extent that's true. But I say this with all due respect to all here...package something a certain way...and we as a society are likely to bite. If we would actually, honestly step up and make a very conscious choice to decide these status symbols are poor choices then perhaps. But again...I've come to realize that something can be marketed with a new approach and people will believe it's a whole new product. Heck even the band this forum is named for can attest to that. LOL.
